Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Va Tech Hokies vs FSU Seminoles
The Hokies of Virginia Tech will travel to Tallahassee, Florida, on Monday, September 3rd, 2018, to take on the FSU Seminoles at Doak Campbell Stadium beginning at 8 pm EST. The Hokies will enter 2017 hoping to improve upon their 9-4 record overall along with atone for yet another disaster, a 30-21 loss in the Camping World Bowl on 12-28-2018. Justin Fuente will hope that the less than stellar season would benefit the team in the long run in allowing them to be motivated this upcoming season to atone. Nonetheless, going up against an FSU team that should have a chip on its shoulder from not only finishing 2017 with a record of 7-6, but, they should also have some confidence after beating the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles in the Independence bowl on 12-27-2017 by a score of 42-13. Coach Odell Hagins went 2-0 to end the season after Jimbo Fisher stepped down after a season in which he went 5-6. Nonetheless, this game will certainly be an interesting one to watch as you have teams that are both coming of less than stellar seasons. With that being said, intensity will certainly be the mantra early on and throughout this contest.
Va Tech Hokies's Latest Performance :
With the Noles looking to start anew in 2018, they will also apply this to their QB position as they would bench Deandre Francois for James Blackmon (2230 yards, 19 TD’s, 11 INT’s, 135 passer rating) as they were apparently looking for a signal caller that could not only be more patient in the pocket along with one that would not throw as many picks in the meantime. Nonetheless, Blackmon seems to be a decent choice, however, the fact that he will have decent talent around him will surely be a benefit to the Tallahassee faithful this year as well. Running back Cam Akers (1025 yards, 194 attempts, 7 TD’s) will return for his sophomore campaign while Jacques Patrick (1412 yards, 134 attempts, 7 TD’s) will return for his senior year as these two will serve as the one-two punch for the Noles offense. Receivers Auden Tate (548 yards, 40 receptions, 10 TD’s) along with Ryan Izzo (317 yards, 20 receptions, 3 TD’s) will pace a receiving corps for the Noles that will be young, yet, talented and hungry to prove themselves.
Defensively, the Seminoles would take a slight step back on their front and linebacker positions, however, the Noles will also be stacked in the secondary as Sophomore Levante Taylor (18 tackles, 1 sack, 2 INT’s) and Freshman Stanford Samuels (27 tackles, 3 TFL, 2 INT’s) will both look to assert themselves in the defensive secondary this year.
FSU Seminoles 's Latest Performance :
While the Hokies look to improve on defense as well as on offense, it can be said that their offense would be fine early on with Josh Jackson (2991 yards, 20 TD’s, 9 INT’s, 135.2 passer rating) returning for his Sophomore season. He will also have a stable of backs in which to choose from as DeShawn McClease (530 yards, 108 attempts, 3 TD’s) and Travon McMillian (439 yards, 104 rushes, 2 TD’s) will be the feature backs for the O. Also, CJ Carrol (157 yards, 15 receptions, 1 TD) will be looking to establish himself at receiver after the loss of Cam Phillips last year while Eric Kumah (324 yards, 28 receptions, 2 TD’s) will return for his Junior season after a year which he received an abundance of experience and success.
The Hokie defense lost many a talent up front within the trenches as well as at the linebacker spot, however, Mook Reynolds (79 tackles, 9 TFL, 1.5 sacks) as the seniors hope to be a continuous presence to opposing offenses.
How Va Tech Hokies & FSU Seminoles Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This will be a huge gauge as to how both these teams will fare in the regular season. On the one hand, the Hokies are in rebuilding mode and would love the challenge of facing an FSU team in Tallahassee while the Noles are looking to bounce back in 2018 with a win over a blue-blood ACC team in week 1. This will be an exciting matchup and one that will be loaded with huge plays along with big hits. There is alot on the line in this contest, as both teams will come in with a fair amount of focus and intensity in which to pick up a victory.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: FSU -7.5
My reason for the pick :
I will have to back the Noles in this game since the Hokies are in rebuilding mode at this point and while they will certainly not be a punching bag for the home team in week 1, they will run into major difficulties trying to contain the powerful running game of the Seminoles in the end, thus allowing for FSU to over the 7.5. It would be important to note that this line started out with FSU being 5.5 favorites. It will be interesting to see how this line will swell/shrink leading up to game time. I will certainly back the Noles now as I expect this line to only increase with time.
Totals Selection: Pick: Over 57
My reason for the prediction :
I would have to think that this contest will be one that will be up and down for both teams. The Hokies QB will try to press the issue against this talented FSU secondary while FSU will pound away with their running backs in which to open opportunities downfield. In all, I will expect the over to bet the result in this matchup in that momentum in such a game as this can, and often does, swing from one team to the other. Combine this with the fact that week 1 can bring about various scenarios, I will back the over in this instance.
