Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Weber State Wildcats vs Utah Utes

The Weber State Wildcats will visit Rice Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah, to take on the Utah Utes on Thursday, 8-30-2018, beginning at 8 pm EST.  Weber State will look to improve upon its 11-3 record in 2017 to where they would win 4 of their last 5 games to make the FCS playoffs on their way to coming 2 games shy of winning the title.  They will look to recover from various vacancies caused by graduation in which to prove to themselves and the college football world that they will be a team to be reckoned with in 2018.  The Utes will look to improve upon their season in 2017 as well as they would end the year at 7-6 to where they would go on to win the heart of Dallas Bowl on 12-26-2017 against West Virginia by a score of 30-14.  Along with improving their overall win-loss record, they will also be looking to perform much better in the conference as well as they would only win 3 games last year in the Pac-12.  In all, expect Utah to improve this year beginning in their week 1 contest versus Webber State.  The last time these two teams met were in 9-7-2013 as the Utes would blow out the Wildcats by a 70-7 score at home.

Weber State Wildcats's Latest Performance :

The Wildcats have concluded that with the addition of playing larger, more known schools during their nonconference schedule will not only allow them the experience needed in which to better compete over time, but, would also test their resolve early on while allowing them to obtain a gauge as to how effective they will be against more solid competition.  Sophomore QB Jake Constantine will look to lead the offense in 2018 while he will have help from running back Kevin Smith along with Sophomore David Jones.  Their bulk of their receiving corps was bitten by graduation; However, Darryl Denby and Sophomore Rashid Shaheed will also get time at receiver in which to show and prove their talents to the team.

On the defensive end, you have a Wildcat team that has suffered the subtraction of talent from their defensive line as well as linebacker position, however, Senior Felipe Sitake along with Junior Gordon Moimi will many the d-line while Senior LeGrand Toia along with Auston Tesch will provide some much-needed stability and leadership to a defense that really needs to gel in a hurry.  Finally, Seniors Jordan Preator and Jeremy Maxwell will man the CB spots for the Utes.

Utah Utes's Latest Performance :

Tyler Huntley (312 yards, 15 TD’s, 10 INT’s) will return for his Junior season to lead this Utes offense.  And despite having to endure losses on offense to their receiving and running game, Huntley will have Junior Jack Moss along with Deveonta henry Cole in the backfield in which to shore up the running game.  The receiving corps was also decimated by graduation, however, Raelon Singleton (521 yards, 36 receptions, 4 TD’s) will return for his Senior season hoping to provide some much-needed leadership and big playmaking ability to a Utes team that has been lacking in this area in the past.

Defensively, Utah will be led by Bradlee Ane (39 tackles, 10 TFL, 7 sacks) who will man the defensive line from his end position while Chase Hansen (51 tackles), Marquise Blair (47 tackles), and Corrion Bell (45 tackles) will be looked upon to not only man the defensive secondary, but, to also provide senior leadership to the remainder of the defense throughout the year.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This matchup will be yet another contest that will draw some attention from the public, particularly, if you are pulling for Weber State.  I happen to like Utah’s chances in this game against a Weber State squad, however, this game is by no stretch a lock.  In other words, the Wildcats are a better team that everyone thinks and with this game being prime time, I feel as if they will certainly have a golden opportunity to prove this to the college football world.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Utah Utes

My reason for the pick :

I will back the Utes in this matchup by a slim margin in that Ky Wittingham’s team was averaged in the Pac-12 last season while the Weber State wildcats would march all the way to the FCS quarterfinals where they would lose by a 31-28 score on the road at James Madison, who would ultimately end up losing in the title game to North Dakota State.  Nonetheless, the Utes will soon find out that Weber State is much more potent that they expected.  Again, I will take the Utes to squeak out a slim victory, however, they will certainly have to work 4 quarters for this week 1 victory.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under

My reason for the prediction :

I will back the under in this contest as the Utes were not as potent on offense as in recent years.  Combine this with the fact that they will be matching up against a talented Wildcat defense, I have the feeling that it will take some time for Utah’s offense to become comfortable at doing what they do best on the offensive side of the ball.  Weber state, on the other hand, will also struggle a bit against the Utes D that will be looking to reestablish itself in week 1 against a potentially dangerous opponent.  It is for this reason that I expect both teams feel each other out early on, however, I also feel as if the score will not be near its set point for this contest.

Betting trends for Weber State Wildcats:

    • Under is 5-1 in Wildcats last 6 games overall
    • Wildcats are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall
    • Wildcats are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games.

Betting trends for Utah Utes:

    • Utes are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 Thursday games
    • Under is 4-1 in Utes last 5 non-conference games
    • Utes are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall
