Duke Blue Devils vs Northwestern Wildcats

The Duke Blue Devils will visit Ryan Field in Evanston, Illinois, to take on the Northwestern Wildcats on 9-8-2018 in week 2 college football action beginning at noon.  The Blue Devils are coming off a 34-14 home win over the Army Black Knights in opening week as they would cash in on the spread (-14) while the over was the play in that the total was set at 46.5 for the game.  The Northwestern Wildcats would squeak out a 31-27 road win over the Purdue Boilermakers as they would cash in on the spread (+1) while the over was the play with the total being set at 51 points.  The Wildcats have won 2 of the last 3 games against Duke while covering the spread in 2 of the last 3 matchups.  The under has been the play in 2 of the last 3 also, yet, on 9-9-2018, Duke would get the 41-17 home win as they would cash in on the spread (+2) while the over of 54 was surpassed.

Duke Blue Devils's Latest Performance :

The Blue Devils would claim a 34-14 over Army in their opener after taking a 17-0 lead after halftime.  Army would go on to make the game interesting in the 2nd half in posting 14 points, however, Duke would also put up 17 in which to neutralize the threat.  The offense for the Blue Devils will accumulate 197 yards in the air along with 184 yards rushing with 18 first downs with Kelvin Hopkins going 10 of 21 with 2 TD’s in the win while also rushing for 37 yards on 16 attempts with a TD.  Calen Holt and Darnell Wilfork would combine for 14 rushes for 74 yards for Duke.  The receiving corps was led by Kell Walker (2 rec, 60 yds) and Camden Harrison (3 rec, 92 yds, TD).  Army obtained 197 passing yards along with 184 yards on the ground along with 21 first downs for the game.  Dylan Singleton would lead the Duke defensive unit with 7 tackles (4 assists) while Koby Quanash would have 4 tackles (5 assists) in the win.

Northwestern Wildcats's Latest Performance :

After being down 31-17 at the half, Purdue would shut down the offense for NW in the 2nd half as they would outscore the road team 10-0, yet, suffer the 31-27 loss at home in week 1.  The offense for the Wildcats would put up 235 passing yards with Clayton Thorson going 16 of 26 for 172 yards while the running game would be credited with 166 yards for the game with Jeremy Larkin having 123 yards on 26 rushes along with 2 TD’s.  John Moten IV and TJ Green would each have a rushing TD in the win.  The receiving corps was led by Cameron Green with 5 catches for 50 yards while Flynn Nagel would also have 5 receptions for 58 yards total.  The defense would allow 270 yards in the air along with 202 rush yards to the Boilermakers along with 23 first downs.  Nate Hall would lead the defense with 7 tackles and 3 assists while Mantrae Hardage would have 5 tackles as well.  Greg Newsome II would also have 5 stops on the night for the defensive unit.

How Duke Blue Devils & Northwestern Wildcats Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Northwestern is 1-0 ATS while the O/U is 1-0

Duke is 1-0 ATS while the O/U is 1-0

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This will certainly be an interesting Big Ten versus ACC showdown as both teams look to continue their momentum from opening week in which to pick up yet another exciting victory this Saturday.  The Wildcats would get out of Purdue with a win in game 1 and will now focus their attention on a Duke team that was very balanced on offense while the defense would come up with stops when needed on a running-oriented Army offense.  Thorson and crew will look to open things up a bit more in week 2 as they could find very little against the stout defense for the Boilermakers.  In all, this has the makings of being a very competitive matchup from teams that are looking to maintain their level of play for another exciting week.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Northwestern -3

My reason for the pick :

Northwestern will make this a very physical game up front.  And while Duke is more than capable of matching this type of intensity and strength, the Wildcats are much more effective when they are able to dominate in the trenches.  It is for this reason that I will back Northwestern and the points on Saturday as I believe that their ability to control the trenches will allow for some opportunities to score.  Though Duke will certainly come to play in this contest, they will begin to show fatigue late in the game, thus allowing for the home team to get the victory while covering the small spread.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Under 49

My reason for the prediction :

Of course, after giving up over 200 yards on the ground to Purdue last weekend, you can bet the coach Fitzgerald will preach the need for discipline and focused play on the defensive side of the ball this week, particularly with a Duke team that has numerous playmakers at the skill positions.  Duke would play well throughout the game in their opener, yet, the defense would get a bit dreary in the 2nd half.  This will not due against Thorson and the Wildcats as they will certainly make them pay for mistakes at home.  Nonetheless, I expect this to be a grind out game to where both teams will struggle to score, thus making it a game that not only will the under become the strong play, but, one that is more favorable to the home team.

Betting trends for Duke Blue Devils:

    • Blue Devils are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up win
    • Under is 5-1 in Blue Devils last 6 road games.

Betting trends for Northwestern Wildcats:

    • Wildcats are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games after allowing more than 450 total yards in their previous game
    • Wildcats are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games following a straight up win
