Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

USC Trojans vs Texas Longhorns

The 21st ranked USC Trojans will make a trip to the Southwest to Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas, to battle the Texas Longhorns on Saturday at 8 pm EST in week 3 college football action. These two teams would meet last year on September 16, 2017 as the Trojans would get the 27-24 home win as the Longhorns would cash in on the spread as 17-point underdogs while the under of 66.5 would not be surpassed.  In their week 2 outing, the Longhorns would get the 28-21 home win versus the Golden Hurricane of Tulsa as they would not cash in on the large spread (-22.5) while the under was the play with the total being set at 59.5 points for the game.  The USC Trojans would fall on the road to the Stanford Cardinal by a 17-3 score as they would also not cover as 4.5-point underdogs while the under was the play with the total being set at 54.5 points for the game.

USC Trojans's Latest Performance :

The Trojans would only score 3 points in their 17-3 loss on the road versus the Stanford Cardinal as JT Daniels would lead the offensive charge in a losing effort.  Also, Aca’Cedric Ware along with Stephen Carr would pace the rushing attack with a combined 111 yards on 28 rushes, total.  The Trojans will certainly look to improve upon those numbers, particularly with the Longhorns allowing 166 yards rushing per game to their opponents.  Also, Texas is also allowing 214 total passing yards thus far in the season, however, QB Daniels has been hampered with a hand injury sustained in week 2, however, is expected to play.  This could be a huge boost to the leaders of the receiving corps in Tyler Vaughns along with Michael Pittman Jr, who will each be looking to improve upon their performance against Stanford in which to put their team in a position to win.

Texas Longhorns's Latest Performance :

Texas would go up 21-0 at the half versus Tulsa in week 2, yet, would have a scare in the second half as the Golden Hurricane would outscore the Longhorns 21-7 in the second half as the Longhorns would seal the victory thanks to a 237-yard, 2 TD effort from Sam Ehlinger.  Furthermore, his favorite target for the contest, Lil’Jordan Humphrey, would collect 109 yards and a score on a 40-yard reception tat would put the put the Longhorns up 21-0 in the second quarter.  Texas would rack up a total of 241 rushing yards in their win as they now look to duplicate their performance against a Trojan defense that ranks 112th in the nation in allowing 235.5 rushing yards per game.  Nonetheless, they will have to somehow do this without their Freshman running back Kaeontae Ingram, who is doubtful with a knee injury for the contest.  On the other hand, the Longhorns would also be looking to make a dent within an active pass defense for the Trojans that are ranked 19th in the country in allowing 10 yards in the air per game.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This is certainly shaping up to be an exciting matchup on Saturday night.  The Trojans will be traveling to Austin in which to get a much-needed win versus a pesky and motivated Longhorns squad while UT while be looking for a quality win versus a ranked opponent in which to build their resume.  Look for both teams to be focused on controlling the trenches in this contest as this will certainly open their offense.  On the other hand, Texas will be looking to kick its opponent when he is down as they would almost suffer a devastating loss last week versus Tulsa because they did not implement this type of philosophy.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Texas Longhorns-3

My reason for the pick :

This will certainly be an interesting matchup and one to where both team will desperately be looking for a win.  Texas needs to continue their momentum after a near disaster at home to Tulsa in week 2 while the Trojans will need to atone for their lackluster loss to the Cardinal last weekend to where their offense performed miserably.  In all, the Trojans will hang around in tis game for 4 quarters, however, the Texas defense will rise to the occasion in the end, thus allowing the home team the victory along with the small cover.

Totals Selection: Pick:   Over 48.5

My reason for the prediction :

I will back the over in this contest in that despite all statistics favoring the Longhorns in this matchup, the Trojans will do all in their power to win this game.  In other words, the Longhorns, as they proved in week two, will certainly allow teams back into games.  And while the Trojans will be a much different opponent than Tulsa, one can only conclude that the over in this instance would be the strong pick for a USC team that never seems to quit.
