Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Vanderbilt Commodores vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The Vanderbilt Commodores will travel to Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana, to take on the 8th ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 pm EST. The Commodores are fresh off of a 41-10 home win over the Nevada Wolfpack in week 2 while the Fighting Irish would pick up a 24-16 home victory over the Ball State Cardinals. In all, both teams are 2-0 on the season while Notre Dame is 1-1 ATS while being 0-2 O/U while the Commodores are 2-0 ATS while also being 0-2 O/U. The last time these two squads met were in home and home matchups in 1995-1996 as Notre Dame would win both contests with the under being the play in both games. The Fighting Irish would pick up the 41-0 win at home on September 16, 1995 while covering the 18-point spread while the Vanderbilt Commodores would cash in on the spread as 22-poont underdogs on September 6th, 1996 in a 14-7 loss.
Vanderbilt Commodores's Latest Performance :
The Vanderbilt Commodores would dominate in their matchup versus the Wolfpack of Nevada last Saturday as they would take a 17-10 lead into the half while outscoring the road team 24-0 in the second to get the victory behind Kyle Shurmur’s 258 yards passing along with 2 TD’s. They will face much stiffer competition at Notre Dame as the Irish is ranked 72nd in total pass defense thus far in allowing teams only 215 yards in the air per game. Shurmur and his favorites targets in Jared Pinckney and Kalija Lipscomb will certainly need to step up for Vanderbilt to pull off a win. Also, the Irish are allowing only 113 yards rushing to their opponents which means that Ke’shawn Vaughn will be asked to increase his production against a stingy defense. Vanderbilt is currently averaging 186 yards per game on the ground, so it will be interesting to see how they match up versus an Irish defense that has not allowed much scoring at all from its opponents (16.5 ppg).
Notre Dame Fighting Irish 's Latest Performance :
Notre Dame looked to have the upper hand against Ball State last Saturday as they would go up 24-6 in the third period, however, the Cardinals would fight back in scoring 10 points in the final period to make the game interesting. Nonetheless, the Irish, behind Miles Boykin would would have 119 yards receiving in the win, would lead the Irish to the win. Quarterback Brandon Winbush would have 297 yards passing on the night, however, with 3 interceptions, was able to allow Ball State to stay in the game. While they were able to find some success in the passing game in this contest, Winbush will certainly need to cut down on the mistakes against a Vanderbilt defense that has allowed only 197 yards in the air in 2018, good for 51st in the nation. On the other hand, the Fighting Irish will also look to find some creases within a Commodores defense that has allowed 75 yards per game on the ground thus far in the season. For this, they will be looking to running back Jafar Armstrong along with Tony Jones Jr. to step up in which to provide them a chance to win. They will have their hands full in a Vandy defense that has allowed only 8.5 points per game in 2018.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The talk seems to be can the Commodores hold their own versus Notre Dame in South Bend. I happen to think yes as they have certainly played in huge venues before while playing in the SEC. In addition to this, Vanderbilt will be looking to continue to build momentum as the season progresses and with their convincing victory over the Wolfpack last weekend, I would say that they are more than ready for this matchup in what will be a highly competitive matchup amongst two teams that will have much on the line. I also see this as being a very low-scoring contest early on in that both defenses will make their presence felt often.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Vanderbilt Commodores +14.5
My reason for the pick :
I will have to back Vanderbilt in this contest to cover in that the Irish have not been overwhelming by any stretch on offense. In other words, the Commodores will look to win the battle up front versus a tough Fighting Irish team in which to neutralize their playmakers in Armstrong along with Boykin and Winbush. Besides, Vanderbilt certainly played a stellar game on the defensive side in their last outing versus the Wolfpack and will certainly take this momentum into this contest as I see them keeping things very close in a hostile environment.
Totals Selection: Pick: Under 52
My reason for the prediction :
This contest will be a battle of wills in the trenches as both teams are strongest on the defensive side of the ball. As stated, both Vanderbilt and Notre Dame are ranked in the top 50 in total defense thus far in the season and each will be looking to defend their ranking on Saturday. Notre Dame’s offense has been a bit inconsistent to start the season, yet, their passing game has been much more consistent. The Commodores offense also has playmakers on the outside that can make a difference, however, both teams possess stellar pass defenses, as stated. In all, I will back the under in this contest as it will certainly be a defensive struggle for both offenses throughout.
