Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

West Virginia Mountaineers vs NC State Wolfpack

The West Virginia Mountaineers will travel to Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh, North Carolina, for a week 3 showdown with the NC State Wolfpack on Saturday at 3:30 pm EST.  The last time these two teams met was on December 28, 2010, when the Wolfpack would get the 23-7 road win to where they would cover the spread as underdogs (+3) while the under was the play with the total being set at 49.5 points for the game.  The Mountaineers would get a 52-17 home win over the Youngstown State Penguins in week 2 as they would cash in as 33-point favorites while there was no total set.  On the other hand, the NC State Wolfpack would dispose of the Panthers of Georgia State at home last Saturday by a 41-7 score as they would cash in on the spread (-25.5) while the under was the play with the total being set at 56.5 points.  Both teams have played well thus far and will be looking to garner some much-needed momentum with a win on Saturday.

West Virginia Mountaineers's Latest Performance :

The West Virginia Mountaineers would take a 21-7 lead into halftime and despite allowing 10 points early in the third period, were able to outscore the Penguins 31-10 in the second half for the blowout victory thanks largely to a 332-yard, 4 TD effort by quarterback Will Grier along with a 115-yard rushing performance from Leddie Brown.  Marcus Simms would also pace the receiving corps with 119 yards on 8 catches on the day as the Mountaineers would rack up 625 yards of total offense.  For an offense that is averaging 46 points so far in the season, it will be interesting to see how West Virginia handles a stout defense for NC State that is giving up only 10 points per game (17th) along with 135 yards on the ground (58th in nation).  Both Grier and Brown will have to be instrumental in the Mountaineers keeping this game close and, possibly, obtaining a win in this contest.  On the other hand, Simms along with Gary Jennings will need to lead the receiving corps against a pass defense for West Virginia that is allowing teams 164.5 total yards passing per outing.

NC State Wolfpack's Latest Performance :

The NC State Wolfpack would go up 20-7 at the half on the Panthers of Georgia State while holding them scoreless in the second half en route to a huge victory in their last time out, thanks to Ryan Finley would have throw for 370 yards in the contest while also throwing for 2 touchdowns.  This West Virginia Mountaineers squad will be an entirely difference beast as they are only allowing 15.5 points per game with a ranking of 31st in the nation while only allowing 164.5 passing yards on the season.  This means that Finley’s main targets in Kelvin Harmon, Thayer Thomas, and Trent Pennix will certainly need to go the extra mile in finding open spaces within the defense to allow the passing game, which is averaging 378 yards per game, to be effective.  Star receiver Jakobi Myers, who would sit out week 2 versus the Panthers, is questionable for this Saturday’s game versus the Mountaineers.  On the other hand, the Wolfpack will need to get more production out of its run game as they are averaging 100 yards per game, good for 118th nationally.  They will certainly look to Brady Bodine to shore up this area of the offense against the WVU defense that is allowing 132.5 yards per game thus far in 2018.  It will be interesting to see how the Mountaineers fare against an NC State offense that is 45th in the nation in total points with 467.5 while being 67th in the nation in scoring offense with 32.5 points per contest.

How West Virginia Mountaineers & NC State Wolfpack Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

NC State is 1-1 ATS while the O/U is 0-2

West Virginia is 2-0 ATS while the O/U is 1-1

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Aside from Boise State versus Oklahoma State, this will most likely be one of the most sought after matchups of week 3.  The Mountaineers will have a solid reputation to uphold as they travel to Carter-Finley on Saturday.  On the other hand, the Wolfpack will certainly need a big win on its resume in which to rely on for consideration at the end of the season.  In all, this will be an offensive battle on Saturday, and one that will certainly pay off for the winner.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  West Virginia -3.5

My reason for the pick :

While I happen to believe that NC State will give the Mountaineers a great game at Carter-Finley on Saturday, I will have to back West Virginia in this matchup in that they have the much better running game with Brown in the backfield.  Also, it is not known how healthy Myers will be for NC State after sitting out the week prior.  Furthermore, the Mountaineers have a better defense with more experience, thus allowing the road team to buckle down, when necessary, in which to get stops late in the game.  This will be an exciting, tight game throughout, and I see the Mountaineers coming out victorious while covering the small spread.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Over 48.5

My reason for the prediction :

With two future NFL prospects under center along with a host of playmakers from which they can choose from, I will pick the total of 48.5 to be surpassed in this matchup as Grier and company will certainly look to establish the pass early on in this matchup.  On the other hand, it is expected for Myers to play in this game after sitting out versus Georgia State, which will allow Finley to have his top receiver in the lineup for an all-important matchup.  In all, expect both offenses to be ready and focused on getting a win, which will be incumbent upon putting points on the board, as is their typical style.
