Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs Wake Forest Demon Deacons

The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame will travel to BB&T Field in Winston Salem, North Carolina on Saturday to take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in week four college football action at noon.  The Irish would pick up a 22-17 home win over the Vanderbilt Commodores where they would not cover the 14 points as home favorites while the under was the play with the total being set at 51.5 points for the game.  These two teams would last square off on November 4, 2017 as the Irish would get the 48-37 home win to where Wake would cover the 15.5 points as underdogs while the total of 55 points was surpassed.  The Demon Deacons would lose at home to the Eagles of Boston College last Saturday as they would suffer the 41-34 loss to where they would not cover the spread as 6.5 underdogs while the over was the play with the total being set at 58.5 points for the game.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish's Latest Performance :

Notre Dame had difficulties versus the Commodores in week three as they would go up 16-3 at the half thanks to three Justin Yoon field goals along with a rushing touchdown from Brandon Wimbush (19 rushes, 84 yards, TD).  They were able to come out with the victory despite being outscored 14-6 in the second half for a slim home victory.  Brandon Wimbush (122 yards) would go 13 for 23 in the passing department while Tony Jones Jr would also have 118 yards on 18 attempts while having 56 yards on two catches in the win.  The strength of the Irish offense is in their running game that averages 166 yards per game while the Demon Deacons allow 146 yards per outing.  The Demon Deacons are ranked 120th in pass defense with 311 yards per game while the Irish averages 200 yards passing per game.   In all, the Irish are allowing 16.7 points per game while the Deacons are putting up 36 points per outing.  Defensive backs Luke Masterson, Cameron Glen, and Amari Henderson are questionable with injuries for Wake Forest while linebacker Jack Reilly is also questionable with an undisclosed injury.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons's Latest Performance :

After a 21-21 tie at the half, the Demon Deacons would be outscored 20-13 in the second half en route to a 31-24 home loss to the Boston College Eagles last Saturday.  Sam Hartman would lead the offensive charge with 214 yards, 2 TD’s along with two interceptions in the loss while Matt Coburn II (23 rushes, 117, TD) and Cade Carney (18 rushes, 116) would lead the rushing attack.  Hartman would also have 65 yards on 16 rushes.  Greg Dortch and Sage Suratt would combine for 12 catches for 143 yards and a TD in defeat.  Wake Forest owns the 15th ranked rushing attack in the nation with 269 yards per game while the Irish will enter the game allowing 107 yards per game.  On the other hand, the Irish gives up a total of 252 yards in pass defense while Wake Forest averages 278 yards per game, good for a 43rd rank in the country.  With 547 yards per game total, the Demon Deacons will certainly be a test for the Irish who allows 359 yards per game in 2018.

How Notre Dame Fighting Irish & Wake Forest Demon Deacons Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Notre Dame is 1-2 ATS while the O/U is 0-3

Wake Forest is 0-3 ATS while the O/U is 2-1

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Both teams will face a test on Saturday afternoon as the Demon Deacons will be looking to atone for their ACC loss to the Eagles last week while the Irish look to simply play more consistently on offense.  It will certainly not get easier for them as they go on the road to face a offensive minded team in Wake Forest.  Furthermore, their defense, despite allowing 31 points in week three, has played solid thus far in 2018.  With that being said, expect a competitive matchup in this game along with one where the Irish will have to keep up with a dangerous set of playmakers for the home team.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Wake Forest +7.5

My reason for the pick :

Despite the Demon Deacons possible being without a slew of cornerbacks for this game, the fact is that the Notre Dame offense has not been very efficient this year, even against inferior competition.  And while Wake Forest has been awful in defending the pass in 2018, it may not matter in the end as their QB play has not been up to par.  With that being said, I will back the Demon Deacons at home with the plus points versus an Irish offense that is ranked 100th in the nation in averaging 367 yards per game while putting up 23 points per game thus far.  On the other hand, Wake Forest is only giving up 17 points per game and should have a great outing versus a shaky Notre Dame squad.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Under 60.5

My reason for the prediction :

I will back the under in this contest as I do not have much confidence in either offense.  In fact, I expect this matchup to be a defensive minded affair to where both will control the line of scrimmage against their offensive counterparts for much of the game.  And while the Wake Forest offense has been much more effective in their overall game plan in 2018, they will struggle against the talent and physicality of Notre Dame throughout, thus allowing the under to be the strong play in the end.

    • Under is 6-0 in Fighting Irish last 6 vs. a team with a winning record.
