Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

South Carolina Gamecocks vs Vanderbilt Commodores

The South Carolina Gamecocks will travel to Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, to face SEC opponent Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday afternoon at 4 pm EST.  These two teams would last meet on October 28, 2017, when the Gamecocks would get the 34-27 home win, yet, the spread was a push while the over was the play with the total being set at 43 points.  In their last outing, the Commodores would suffer the 22-17 road loss in week three as they would cover the 14-point spread as road underdogs while the total of 51.5 points was not surpassed.  South Carolina would suffer the 41-17 home loss in week two to SEC foe Georgia Bulldogs as they would not cover the 8.5 points spread as home dogs while the over would be the play as the total was set at 54.5 points for the game.  The underdog is 4-1-1 ATS in the last six meetings while the under has been the play in three of the last five meetings in Nashville.

South Carolina Gamecocks's Latest Performance :

South Carolina would be destroyed by the Georgia Bulldogs in week two as they would go down 20-10 at home during the half while being outscored 21-7 in the second as they would suffer their first loss of the season.  They would only have 54 rush yards for the game, yet, the passing game would rack up 282 yards total as Jake Bentley threw a touchdown pass in the contest along with two costly interceptions.  Bryan Edwards was a bright spot for the offense as he caught seven passes for 111 yards along with two scores in the loss for the Gamecocks.  With a week off the get back to basics, the Carolina offense will look to square off versus a Vandy defense that is ranked in the top 50 in defensive pass and rushing efficiency while allowing teams 308 total yards per game, good for 29th in the nation.  On the other hand, they are ranked 14th in points allowed with 13 per game while the Carolina offense is putting up 33 points per outing.  It will be interesting to see how the layoff has benefitted South Carolina.  On the other hand, I would be curious to see how/if the loss to Notre Dame had any type of carry over effect for the Commodores.

Vanderbilt Commodores's Latest Performance :

Vandy could get nothing going in the first half as they would go into halftime down 16-3 on the road to the Irish in week three; However, they would wake up in the second half as they would not only get a rushing touchdown by Ke’Shawn Vaughn (10 rushes, 54 yards, TD) along with a Jared Pinkney 18 yards touchdown pass from Kyle Shurmur (326 yards, TD, INT) to tighten the lead for the Irish.  Nonetheless, a Nic Weishar touchdown would seal the victory for Notre Dame as they would pick up the slim 22-17 victory.  Nonetheless,  Khari Blasingame would also help pace the rushing attack for the Commodores with 13 rushes for 49 yards while Pinkney would have 111 yards receiving along with a huge touchdown catch in the loss.  Vanderbilt is averaging 31 points per game thus far in 2018 and will look to ride their passing game to a win over the Gamecocks this weekend as they are allowing only 157 yards per game, good for 19th in the country.  However, Vandy is also averaging 156 yards on the ground thanks to Vaughn and Blasingame who will look for yet another decent outing versus a South Carolina team that is ranked 104th in the nation in defending the run in giving up 201 rush yards to their opponents.  Also, the Gamecocks may be without two of their defensive backs for this game as Jamal Cook and Nick Harvey are both questionable due to injuries.

How South Carolina Gamecocks & Vanderbilt Commodores Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

South Carolina is 1-1 ATS while the O/U is 2-0

Vanderbilt is 3-0 ATS while the O/U is 0-3

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The SEC conference schedule begins for Vandy on Saturday, yet, both will enter this game looking for a much better performance as they are each coming off huge losses.  These teams always seem to play each other close, so, one could certainly expect a competitive game throughout; However, we may well be looking at a defensive game as both offenses are middle of the road in the offensive rankings while having solid defenses that have done well in both areas.  And while USC has been more susceptible to giving up yards on the ground than Vanderbilt, the Gamecocks will come to play, as always, in this matchup to begin the conference schedule on a high note.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Vanderbilt Commodores +2

My reason for the pick :

I will gladly take the home team with the points in this matchup as you have a Vandy team that will punish teams both in the pass along with their rushing attack.  In all, they have talent on the outside as well as in the backfield with Shurmur and Blasingame and will certainly look to establish themselves in the trenches versus a Gamecocks team that was shoved around by conference foe Georgia in their last time out.  In all, I will back the home team in this instance as they should be encouraged after a solid outing on the road versus the Irish.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Under 54.5

My reason for the prediction :

I will back the under in this contest due to Vandy’s defense playing solid thus far in the season while the Gamecocks defense will also look to play a much better defensive ball game after allowing 41 points to UGA in their last time out.  In all, this will be a grinding game that will entail a heavy dose of the running game for both squads.  It is for this reason that the total will remain below its set total on Saturday.
