Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Virginia Tech Hokies vs Duke Blue Devils
The 24th ranked Virginia Tech Hokies will travel to Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, North Carolina, for an ACC matchup with the Duke Blue Devils on Saturday with the game beginning at 7 pm EST. In their last outing, the Hokies fell hard to the Monarchs of Old Dominion by a 49-35 score on the road as they were not able to cover as 29-point favorites while the over was the play with the total being set at 52.5 points for the game. The Blue Devils picked up the 55-13 home win over the North Carolina Central Eagles as they were also not able to cover the spread as 44.5-point favorites while the over was the result as the total was set at 55.5 points for the game. In their last outing, Virginia Tech would hold Duke to only 183 total yards for the game along with 10 first downs as they would dominant the game throughout on their way to a 24-3 home win on October 28, 2017. They would cover the spread as 17-point favorites while the under was the play with 47.5 points being the total for the matchup.
Virginia Tech Hokies 's Latest Performance :
The Hokies played horribly on the road versus the Old Dominion Monarchs last Saturday as they allowed 28 points to the home team in the final period to break the game open due to two Blake LaRussa passing touchdowns along with a pair of touchdowns by Jeremy Cox. Virginia Tech’s 123rd ranked pass defense allowed 495 yard passing in the game along with their 9th ranked rushing defense allowing 137 yards rushing to the Monarchs while allowing a total of 600 yards of offense. The Hokies offense had 282 yards passing with Josh Jackson throwing for 151 yards, two TD’s, and an interception while Ryan Willis would also get some time under center as Jackson would leave the game with an injury as he threw for 131 yards and a touchdown. Damon Hazelton led the receiving corps with 156 yards and two touchdowns while the rushing attack collected 318 yards for the game with Steven Peoples having 156 yards and two touchdown runs in defeat. They will now turn their attentions to a Duke team that is putting up 38 points per game while being ranked 32nd in the nation in averaging 220 yards per game on the ground.
Duke Blue Devils's Latest Performance :
After taking a 27-13 halftime lead, the Blue Devils cruised to victory over the North Carolina Central Eagles last Saturday in outscoring them 28-0 in the final half on their way to a blowout victory to remain undefeated. The Duke offense racked up 628 yards of total offense with Quintin Harris leading the way with three TD’s along with 202 passing yards for the game. Davis Koppenhaver had two touchdown receptions for Duke while the rushing game collected 372 yards as Brittan Brown (13 rushes, 118 yards, TD) and Marvin Hubbard III (20 rushes, 96 yards) leading the attack in the victory. The defense for Duke, that allows 428 yards per game to their opponents, would allow only 187 yards to the Eagles with only 51 passing yards while the rushing attack for North Carolina Central put up 136 yards in the loss.
How Virginia Tech Hokies & Duke Blue Devils Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Duke is 3-0 ATS while the O/U is 2-1
Virginia Tech is 2-1 ATS while the O/U is 2-1
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The Hokies dominated Duke last year as they would only hold their offense to 183 yards of total offense in a 24-3 win. They will certainly be looking to atone for their loss to the Monarchs last Saturday while Duke will be looking to extend their undefeated record to 4-0 while picking up an ACC victory in the meantime. Look for Harris and the Blue Devils to exploit the defensive secondary for Virginia Tech on Saturday that is allowing way too many points to their opponents with 320 pass yards per outing. On the other hand, their top ranked rush defense would be pushed around in the trenches versus the Monarchs and with Duke being a much tougher foe in collecting over 200 yards on the ground, I would expect that the Hokies will have another test on their hands in defending the run. Nonetheless, the Hokies have a potent running game as well in averaging 245 yards per game, yet Duke is ranked in the top 50 in stopping the run in allowing only 133 yards per game.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies +5
My reason for the pick :
While the Blue Devils will be motivated for this home matchup on Saturday and may indeed come out with a slim victory, I expect the Hokies to perform much better as they would stink it up versus a Monarch team last week that struggled since the start of the season. With that being said, I will back Tech in this matchup versus a dangerous Duke team on the road as they are very familiar with their offense while they also dominated them in last year’s matchup. In all, take the road team to show and prove while covering the five points as underdogs.
Totals Selection: Pick: Under 51
My reason for the prediction :
The Hokie defense, as stated, would be pushed around last Saturday and being that they pride themselves on the defensive side of the ball, expect them to perform much better over a Duke team that has somewhat overachieved after their starting QB was lost due to injury only a couple weeks ago. I will back the under in this matchup as it will truly be a game where both teams will battle for control of the trenches while also utilizing their running games which both rank in the top 30 in the nation. Of course, the Blue Devils will convert some big plays within the shaky defensive secondary for Tech, the game will remain low-scoring and competitive throughout as the under will be the strong play.
