Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Tulsa Golden Hurricane vs Houston Cougars

An American Athletic Conference matchup versus the Tulsa Golden Hurricane and the Houston Cougars will take place at Hofheinz Pavilion in Houston, Texas, on Thursday at 8 pm EST.  Tulsa is currently in the fifth place slot within the western division of the conference while Houston occupies the fourth-place position.  They both would not suit up in week five, however, both picked up wins in week four as the Cougars blew out the Tigers of Texas Southern by a 70-14 score at home while the Golden Hurricane suffered a 31-17 road loss to the Temple Owls on September 20th to where they did not cover the spread as 6.5 road dogs.  Nonetheless, the Golden Hurricane are 4-0 in their last four meetings in Houston while being 4-1 overall in the last five meetings versus the Cougars.  Finally, the road team is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings amongst these two squads.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane's Latest Performance :

Tulsa, on the other hand, allowed 191 yards on the ground to Temple in their week four loss as the home team averaged 5.3 yards per carry on a defense that is ranked 93rd in the nation in averaging 183 yards per game.  To make things worse, linebacker Robert Revels III may not suit up for Thursday’s game due to an undisclosed injury which could severely hurt their already shaky run defense.  The defense would get two interceptions in the game, however, while allowing Temple to possess the ball for only 23:09 minutes.  Luke Skipper, quarterback for the Golden Hurricane, threw three interceptions in the matchup while ending with 195 yards on the day while Corey Taylor II ran for 96 yards along with two TD’s as the Tulsa rushing attack would shine in the loss in obtaining 208 total yards.  Finally, the passing attack was led by Justin Hobbs with 78 yards on nine catches.  Unfortunately, Hobbs is questionable with an arm injury for this contest while running back Shamari Brooks is questionable also with an arm injury.

Houston Cougars's Latest Performance :

Houston went up 42-0 at the half on the Tigers and never looked back as they racked up 671 yards for the game while allowing 338 yards to Texas Southern en route to the win.  D’Eriq King threw for three scores to Marquez Stephenson (6 rec, 67 yds, TD), Terry Mark, and Keith Corbin (4 rec, 46 yds, TD).  Kelan Walker rushed for 105 yards on nine carries along with a touchdown in the win for Houston.  The Cougars are averaging 607 total yards per game which is first in the nation while the offense, second in the nation in points scored, averages 52 points per game.  The 28th ranked rushing defense for the Cougars allowed only 60 yards on the ground to the Tigers in the contest while giving up 278 yards to Texas Southern’s passing game.  They will certainly have their hands full on Thursday versus a Golden Hurricane team that is very dominant in their running game and averaging 210 yards per game.

How Tulsa Golden Hurricane & Houston Cougars Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Houston is 2-2 ATS while the O/U is 3-1

Tulsa is 1-3 ATS while the O/U is 1-3

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The Golden Hurricane has been the play ATS in this matchup in recent meetings as they have covered in most of their past matchups.  And while they would not perform as expected in their last outing, they continue to be a dangerous team due to their running attack along with a solid defense that is very good at defending the pass.  Houston’s offense can indeed move the ball, particularly in the passing game as they average 355 yards per game and will look to exploit Tulsa’s 26th ranked pass defense, which will certainly make the game interesting.  In all, the Golden Hurricane will seek a win in this matchup over a team that they have not won against much in the past, yet, have kept the game well within the spread.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Houston Cougars -18

My reason for the pick :

I will back the Cougars in this matchup as they simply have the better all-around team.  King (1197 passing yards), Patrick Carr (201 total rushing yards), and Stephenson (391 receiving yards, 6 TD’s) serves as a viable group of weapons for the Cougars and will cause problems to a defense that gives up 29 points per outing.  Of course, Houston’s 15th ranked rushing attack that averages 252 yards on the ground per game will certainly challenge a rushing defense that allows 183 yards to their opponent in 2018.  In all, look for the Cougars to cruise in this Thursday night matchup.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Over (off)

My reason for the prediction :

With Tulsa struggling in stopping the run along with the passing attack for Houston being so potent, I see the Cougars scoring early and often in this matchup.  Carr will certainly have a great night while King will be sure to utilize his numerous weapons as the scoreboard will light up.  Houston has not been effective in stopping the pass this year, as stated, as Tulsa will look to improve upon their 106th ranking in passing offense in this contest as well.  Look for the over to be the strong play as both teams will put some scores up, however, Houston will win by at least three scores.
