Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Pittsburgh Panthers vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The Panthers of Pittsburgh will take on the 7th ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Notre Dame stadium in South Bend, Indiana, on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 pm EST. The last time these teams met dates to November 7, 2015 as the Irish picked up the 42-30 road win as they dashed a huge rally by Pitt in the second half as they erased a 21-3 halftime deficit to come within 11 points late in the third quarter; However, the Irish was able to remain consistent due to a five touchdown game by DeShon Kizer to seal the win. The Panthers also obtained some momentum last week after halting a two-game losing skid at home versus the Syracuse Orange on Saturday in picking up the 44-37 win as Alex Kessman nailed a 45-yard field goal with :08 seconds left to force overtime to where Darrin Hall rushed for a three-yard TD in OT to seal the victory. The Irish also picked up a quality win on the road over the 23rd ranked Virginia Tech Hokies in week six as they outscored the home team 28-7 in the second half after going up only 17-16 at the half to remain undefeated on the season.
Pittsburgh Panthers's Latest Performance :
After a back and forth game to where both teams dominated the opposing defenses on the ground, Pitt was able to come up with some huge first downs late in the game while Alex Kessman tied the score at 37 all with only :08 seconds left to ultimately force overtime. Darrin Hall, who had 107 yards and two touchdowns on the day, sealed the victory for the home team while Quadree Ollison ended with 192 yards and a score in the win. Kenny Pickett only had 137 yards, a TD, along with an interception, however, the passing game averaged 6.8 yards per catch. Rafael Araujo Lopes led the receiving corps with 64 yards on only two catches along with a touchdown pass from Pickett that put the Panthers up 27-17 early in the third quarter. The defense for Pitt collected three turnovers in the game while only allowing Eric Dungy (195 yards, TD, and 2 INT’s) and the dangerous offense of Syracuse to possess the football for 27:36 minutes for the game.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish's Latest Performance :
Notre Dame had two touchdowns from Dexter Williams in the second half, with one being a 97-yard run to make the score 24-16 early in the third, along with two Ian Book touchdown passes to gain control of their contest versus Virginia Tech in week six to get a huge win. Book ended the game with 271 yards, two TD’s, and an interception while Williams was the man of the day with 178 yards rushing along with three touchdowns for a team that averaged 6.1 yards on a Hokie defense that came into the game ranked 39th in protecting the run. Notre Dame also averaged 7.7 yards per catch in the win while the defense collected two turnovers for the game while surpassing their total yards allowed mark by giving up 441 yards for the game. The Note Dame rush defense that allows only 128 yards per game to their opponents will look for success versus a stout and physical Pitt rushing attack that churns out 199 yards on the ground per outing.
How Pittsburgh Panthers & Notre Dame Fighting Irish Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Pittsburgh is 2-4 ATS while the O/U is 3-3
Notre Dame is 4-2 ATS while the O/U is 3-3
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
Here are two teams that are on a high after picking up a couple huge wins in their last outing. Notre Dame will look to remain undefeated versus a team that they have had some history in beating in the past while the Panthers will simply look to build from their winning ways as they erased a losing streak versus a solid Syracuse team at home in week six. What will be interesting in this game will be how will the Pittsburgh and its 39th ranked rush offense will perform versus a Notre Dame defense that is ranked 39th in stopping the run in allowing only 128 yards per game. Also, the Panthers’ leader in touchdowns, Taysir Mack, is day to day with a lower body injury and uncertain to play in this matchup which tips the scales for the Irish even more.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Notre Dame -21
My reason for the pick :
I will give the edge to the Irish in this matchup as they are much more solid on both sides of the ball while also being very dominant at home thus far despite only winning their four-home games this season by an average of 10 points per game. Nonetheless, they beat Stanford by a 38-17 score in their last home outing and will seek to build from their momentum gained by beating the Hokies in week six to pounce on a Pittsburgh team that is one-dimensional on offense. And while Notre Dame can possibly exploit in the defensive secondary as they allow 230 yards per game, Pickett and the offense for the Panthers only average 149 yards per game, good for 120th in the nation. In all, look for the Irish to play well in this game over the Panthers while cruising to their seventh win in as many games and remaining undefeated.
Totals Selection: Pick: Over 56
My reason for the prediction :
Notre Dames offense, after averaging 23 points during their first three games of the season, have averaged 46 points per game in their last three outings. And with Pittsburgh allowing close to 200 yards rushing to their opponents per game, look for Notre Dame and their 43rd ranked rushing attack to have a field day in taking advantage of the 103rd ranked rush defense for the Panthers. And while the Panthers may not score much in this game, they will benefit from a shaky Irish defensive secondary as the total will go slightly over its set mark in what will be a dominating performance by the home team.
