Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Houston Cougars vs East Carolina Pirates

The Houston Cougars will travel to Dowdy Fikclin Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina, for an AAC battle versus the East Carolina Pirates at 7 pm EST.  The home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four games amongst these two teams while the over has been the play in four of the last five games in Greenville.  The last time these two teams met was on November 4, 2017 as the Cougars picked up the 52-27 home win as they covered the spread at 24-point favorites while the total of 63 was surpassed.  In their last outing, Houston picked up a 41-26 home win over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane last Thursday at home as they expanded a four-point halftime lead by outscoring Tulsa by a score of 24-13 in the second half en route to their second straight victory.  On the other hand, the East Carolina Pirates fell to the Temple Owls on the road by a 49-6 score as they lost their second game in three outings in giving up nearly 300 yards passing to the home team while allowing 3.6 yards per rush to their opponent in the contest.

Houston Cougars's Latest Performance :

Houston was in a tight battle versus the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the first half during their last win, however, pulled away late in the second half as D’Eriq King ran for a touchdown while throwing for two touchdown passes to allow the Cougars to escape with a 41-26 home win.  Kind ended the night with 165 yards along with three touchdowns and two picks while also rushing for 117 yards and two TD’s in the victory.  The 11th ranked rushing attack for the Cougars put up 314 yards while their defense also gave up some yards to Tulsa in this matchup as they allowed 199 yards for a 3.5 yards per rush average.  Both teams have three turnovers each for the game, yet Tulsa did themselves no favors as they racked up 85 yards in penalties.

East Carolina Pirates 's Latest Performance :

East Carolina could only muster two field goals in their loss to the Temple Owls in their last outing as the offense collected only 196 total yards for the game with the rushing attack averaging only 2.6 yards per carry while the passing game put up 120 yards for the game as Reid Herring went 17 of 31 for the game.  Furthermore, the Pirates only obtained 12 first downs compared to 26 for the Owls while East Carolina went four for 18 third down conversions.  Their defense, on the other hand, allowed the Owls to convert on ten of 17 third down conversion while giving up 470 total yards as Anthony Russo threw for 254 yards, four TD’s and a pick.  The rushing attack for Temple was just as potent as they racked up 173 total yards as they averaged 3.6 yards per carry.  In other words, ECU’s defense, while entering the game ranked in the top 30 in yards allowed per game with 340 along with rush yards allowed per game (110), imploded in this matchup while losing two of their last three games as they are allowing 34 points per game during this time while the offense has put up only 18 points per.  They now face a Houston team that is averaging 50 points per game in 2018 while the ranking second in total yards per game with 581 yards per outing.

How Houston Cougars & East Carolina Pirates Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Houston is 2-3 ATS while the OU is 3-2

East Carolina is 2-3 ATS while the OU is 3-2

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

One must wonder how the Pirates will stop the Cougars on Saturday.  East Carolina is giviing up 30 points per game while their pass defense is ranked 73rd in the nation while Houston ranks in the top 15 in every major offensive category thus far.  In other words, this can very well be a blowout for Houston if East Carolina is not able to some how neutralize King and his weapons while also utilizing their 44th ranked passing attack to take advantage of Houston’s shaky defensive secondary that allows 357 yards per game.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Houston Cougars -16

My reason for the pick :

I will ride with the Cougars and the points in this contest as they have been much more consistent lately in two straight and four of their last five while the Pirates have been up and down all year in exchanging wins for losses on a weekly basis.  With that being said, Houston has dominated this series in the past and this will certainly continue as their offense is on a roll.  And while their pass defense is lacking constancy on a weekly basis, look for the Pirates to score some points; However, look for the Cougars to win in a shootout on Saturday.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Over 69.5

My reason for the prediction :

The over has been the play in six of the last ten games overall for both teams while it was also the result in their last matchup amongst each other.  With that being said, look for the over to be the strong play in that Houston is looking unstoppable, particularly, versus AAC conference teams while their pass secondary will certainly allow the Pirates, who are currently averaging 24 points per game, to put some scores on the board as well.  Nonetheless, both teams’ ability to score consistently will allow for the over to be the result after four quarters.

Betting trends for Houston Cougars:

    • Under is 4-0 in Cougars last 4 games on grass.
    • Cougars are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following an ATS loss.
    • Under is 6-1 in Cougars last 7 games in October.

Betting trends for East Carolina Pirates :

    • Under is 4-0 in Pirates last 4 games after allowing more than 40 points in their previous game.
    • Over is 6-1 in Pirates last 7 games after allowing more than 450 total yards in their previous game.
    • Pirates are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
