Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

UCLA Bruins vs California Golden Bears

November 24, 2017 was the last time the UCLA Bruins met the California Golden Bears in Pac 12 action as the Bruins picked up the 30-27 home win while Cal covered as seven-point road dogs with the total of 66 not being surpassed.  This year, the Bruins will travel to California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley California, to take on the Bears at 7 pm EST as both will be looking to either get their first win of the year, or, go two games above .500 for the year.  In their last outing, the Bruins were outlasted by the Washington Huskies by a 31-24 score at home as the road team controlled the time of possession while racking up 197 yards for the game.  The Bears suffered a 24-17 road loss to the Wildcats of Arizona in a Pac 12 matchup that saw the Bears outplay the Wildcats in every way, yet, were doomed by four turnovers along with 115 yards in penalties for the day.  In all, the Bruins are 0-5 ATS in their last five meetings in California while the home team is 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings, overall.  Finally, the under is 5-0 in the last five meetings.

UCLA Bruins's Latest Performance :

UCLA has had a tumultuous season and will love to get a win in this matchup after an outing that saw them lose their fifth straight game while allowing their opponents to score 30 or more points in their fourth game in five outings, total.  They racked up 422 yards for the game with Dorian Thompson Robinson having 272 yards along with two TD’s and a pick while Caleb Wilson stepped up for the receiving corps with 102 yards on eight receptions along with a touchdown catch.  The rushing attack for the Bruins racked up 150 yards in the game with Joshua Kelly leading the charge with 125 yards and a score on 25 attempts.  The bottom line is that the Bruins defense can be exploited in either the passing or running game as they allowed the Huskies to put up 197 yards for the game while Jake Browning passed for 265 yards, a TD, and an interception in the win.  For the season, the Bruins defense is giving up 431 yards total to their opponents.

California Golden Bears's Latest Performance :

Cal pulled within three points versus Arizona late in the third quart yet could only muster a field goal in the fourth quarter as the Wildcats’ Scottie Young Jr intercepted the second pick six of the day for the road team while getting the conference win last Saturday.  For the game, Brandon Mcllwain threw for 315 yards, however, committed three turnovers overall that played in huge role in the loss.  Cal also had a fumble in the contest while racking up 115 penalty yards in what was an ugly game for the home team en route to losing their second straight game.  Their 24th ranked defense in total yards did, however, limit the Arizona offense to only 265 yards for the game as Khalil Tate passed for 141 yards, a TD, along with an interception.  They must do better, particularly, on the offensive end this week as UCLA allows 36 points per game.  Furthermore, to take advantage of their pass defense that allows 234 yards per game, Mcllwain must cut down on mistakes in his reads.

How UCLA Bruins & California Golden Bears Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

UCLA is 2-3 ATS while the OU is 3-2

California is 1-3-1 ATS while the OU is 2-3

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Both these Pac 12 teams are struggling on the season and, as stated, and will come out with focus and intensity in which to pick up a win; However, which team will maintain that focus over the course of the game will remain a mystery.  The winner of this game will need to dominate within the trenches in which to establish themselves on the ground, which favors California and their 55th ranked rushing attack that averages 189 yards per game.  On the other hand, UCLA ranks 101st and 102nd in their passing and rushing attacks and will challenge a Bears defense that is allowing only 175 along with 155 yards to their opponents, respectively, in 2018.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  California Bears -7

My reason for the pick :

I will back the Bears in this contest as UCLA has thrown away game after game by not being able to stop their opponents on defense while the offense has also been inconsistent as the season progresses.  Look for the defense of Cal to neutralize the run game for the Bruins while putting pressure on Thompson Robinson throughout the game in force turnovers and/or ensure that they are getting off the field after third down.  In all, the home team will cover the seen points for this matchup while dominating in the trenches were most wins begin.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Under 52.5

My reason for the prediction :

The under was the play in last year’s matchup and I will expect this to be the case this season as both offenses find themselves in a lull at this point with the Bruins averaging only 18.4 games for the year while the Bears are putting up a tad over 20 points in their last two games, overall.  Combine this with the fact that the Bears defense has kept the team in games thus far, expect them to shut down the offense for the Bruins over the course of the game.  On the other hand, look for Cal to put some points on the board early while cruising to a victory to where the score will remain under its set total.

Betting trends for UCLA Bruins:

    • Bruins are 3-13 ATS in their last 16 games following an ATS win.
    • Over is 4-1 in Bruins last 5 games in October.

Betting trends for California Golden Bears:

    • Under is 7-1-1 in Golden Bears last 9 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game.
    • Golden Bears are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game.
    • Over is 4-1 in Golden Bears last 5 home games.
