Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
West Virginia Mountaineers vs Iowa State Cyclones
The 6th ranked West Virginia Mountaineers will travel to Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa, to take on the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday afternoon in a Big 12 showdown at 7 pm EST. The last time these two teams met was on November 4, 2017 as the Mountaineers picked up the 20-16 home win as the spread was a push (4) and with the under being the play with the total being set at 58 points for the game. The favorite is 3-0-1 ATS in the last four meetings amongst these teams while the road team is 4-1-1 ATS in the last six meetings, overall. Finally, the Mountaineers are 3-0-1 ATS in the last four meetings, overall. In their last outing, the Cyclones picked up a huge victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys last Saturday by a 48-42 score as they got 318 yards from QB Brock Purdy along with four touchdown passes in the win. The Mountaineers also picked up a 38-22 home win over the Kansas Jayhawks last weekend as Will Grier overcame three interceptions to pass for 332 yards and four TD’s in the win.
West Virginia Mountaineers's Latest Performance :
Iowa State went in to Stillwater last week and pulled out an outstanding win as they allowed the Cowboys to rack up only 415 yards total which is well below their per game average. They also allowed only 2.9 yards per rush in the contest while the defense collected two turnovers en route to the victory. The offense for the Cyclones put up 465 yards, well over 100 yards over their average, as the rushing attack was led by Brock Purdy with 84 yards and a score while Purdy also threw for 318 yards along with four touchdowns and an interception. Tarique Milton finished with four receptions for 98 yards and a TD as the passing attack averaged 13 yards per catch. Needless to say, with WVU averaging 41 points per game with the fourth ranked passing attack in the nation, the 69th ranked pass defense will certainly have its hands full on Saturday.
Iowa State Cyclones 's Latest Performance :
Will Grier threw two touchdown passes in the first half as the Mountaineers took a 21-7 lead at the half while outscoring the Jayhawks 17-15 in the second half en route to a conference victory last Saturday. Grier ended the game with 332 yards passing along with four touchdowns along with three interceptions for the game with David Sills V having 74 yards on seven catches and a TD in the win. The rushing attack for WVU collected 177 yards in the contest as Leddie Brown put up 107 yards and a score in the contest. The Mountaineers 25th ranked defense in total yards gave up only 286 yards in the game as Kansas averaged only 3.1 yards per carry along with committing three turnovers for the game. West Virginia should have yet another solid outing versus the Cyclones that are averaging 24 points per game while ranking 121st in total yards per outing with 333 per game.
How West Virginia Mountaineers & Iowa State Cyclones Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
West Virginia is 4-1 ATS while the OU is 2-3
Iowa State is 3-2 ATS while the OU is 2-3
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
As stated, the Mountaineers seem to be on a mission this season as Grier and his playmakers have certainly played well thus far. They will, however, have trouble running the ball as the Cyclones have proven that they are more than capable of stopping the opponents run game on a weekly basis. Also, Iowa State is allowing just 24 points per game and will look forward to the challenge that the 6th ranked Mountaineers will bring to the table on Saturday.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: West Virginia Mountaineers -6.5
My reason for the pick :
While the Cyclones picked up a huge win in their last outing, I will back the Mountaineers to go into Ames and perform solidly with Grier at the helm. He has thrown for over 1800 yards and 21 TD passes this year and will likely have a feast on Iowa States defense that is allowing 278 yards per game in the air to their opponents. In all, WVU will just be too much for Iowa State to compete with, thus allowing me to back the road team and the points in this matchup.
Totals Selection: Pick: Under 56
My reason for the prediction :
The under was the play in last season’s matchup amongst these two teams and with the Cyclones only allowing 24 points this season on defense, look for this game to remain tight throughout. And while Grier and company will take their shots as well as score points in this matchup, Iowa State has the 70th ranked passing attack in the country and will certainly try the Mountaineers and their 47th ranked pass defense that allows 211 yards per game. In all, look for another game amongst these squads to where the under will be the play.
