Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Minnesota Golden Gophers vs Nebraska Cornhuskers

The Minnesota Golden Gophers will travel to memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska to face the reeling Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday afternoon in Big Ten action beginning at 3:30 pm EST.  Both the Gophers and Cornhuskers are coming off conference losses as the former fell to the Oho State Buckeyes by a 30-14 score at home as they were shutout 13-0 in the second half after playing a great first half to which to went into the break down 17-14.  On the other hand, Nebraska fought hard on the road versus Northwestern, yet came out with the 34-31 loss as Drew Luckenbaugh kicked a 37 yard field goal to seal the victory in OT.  The last time these teams met was on November 11, 2017 as the Golden Gophers picked up the 54-21 win at home in a pickem game to which to over was the play.  The Golden Gophers are 3-1-1 ATS in the last five meetings with the Cornhuskers, overall.

Minnesota Golden Gophers's Latest Performance :

Minnesota held their last game versus OSU close during the first half thanks to two Mohamed Ibrahim touchdown runs, however, they went cold in the second half as the Buckeyes had three touchdown passes from Dwayne Haskins to seal the road victory last Saturday.  Zack Annexstad was terrible in throwing for 218 yards, yet the QB had two interceptions and no TD’s in the loss while Ibrahim was the lone bright light for the Gophers as he rushed 23 times for 153 yards and two scores.  The defense allowed 9.4 yards per catch to the Buckeyes in the game while giving up a total of 504 total yards to the visitors.  Their inability to protect or defend the pass has been the norm for Minnesota as they are ranked 79th in the country in allowing 233 yards per game while their rush defense has shined in ranking 27 in allowing just 122 yards on the ground to their opponents.  And while they have had success when facing Nebraska in recent matchups, look for this game to be a tight and interesting one versus two awful teams, overall, that will be looking to get a conference win.

Nebraska Cornhuskers's Latest Performance :

Nebraska is winless on the season while covering the spread only one game in 2018 while the over has been the play in four of these six contests, primarily due to Nebraska ranking 108th in total yards allowed per game (446), total pass yards per game (269), along with total points allowed per outing (38).  The 34 points that Northwestern scored against the Cornhuskers was the lowest a team has scored against Nebraska in their past four games as Michigan, Purdue, and Wisconsin all hung at least 40 points on their defensive unit.  The offense, on the other hand, is ranked in the top 50 in rushing and passing offense, however, as a team, they are averaging only 23 points per game, thus questioning their overall offensive efficiency.  Versus Northwestern, they collected 231 yards on the ground for a 4.9 yards per carry average with Devine Ozigbo leading the way with 159 yards along with two touchdowns while the passing game racked up 251 yards with Adrian Martinez throwing for only a TD along with two picks.  Of course, they turned the ball over three times in the contest, yet went seven for 16 on third downs in the loss.  Their defense allowed only 32 yards on the ground to where they have been solid on the year, however, their awful pass defense allowed 455 yards to Clayton Thorson, who also threw three touchdown passes along with two interceptions in the win.  Their matchup with Minnesota may play in their favor as the golden Gopher passing attack has been horrible in averaging 200 yards per game while its rushing attack ranks 90th in the country with 151 yards per outing.

How Minnesota Golden Gophers & Nebraska Cornhuskers Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Minnesota is 4-2 ATS while the OU is 3-3

Nebraska is 1-4-1 ATS while the OU is 4-2

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

As stated, Minnesota gets an edge in this matchup due to their dominance over the Cornhuskers ATS in recent matchups; However, look for the Cornhuskers to remain in the game by utilizing their best option in their rushing attack that will be facing off against a tough defensive line for Minnesota.  Of course, Martinez and company will also challenge a pass secondary for the Gophers that is known to give up big plays as they were picked apart by Haskins and the OSU receiving corps in their last outing.  In all, this will be a battle in the trenches, first and foremost, since both teams rely heavily on their rushing attacks to open opportunities within their passing attacks.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Minnesota Golden Gophers +3.5

My reason for the pick :

I will back the Golden Gophers in this contest with the points since they have had success covering versus Nebraska in the past, as stated.  And while their offense has been awful to watch this season, they will find some opportunities versus Nebraska’s pass secondary that will keep them in the game.  Of course, the defense will be instrumental in the Gophers covering in this game as well in that Nebraska has not been very efficient in scoring this season, thus allowing me to feel as if the road team will keep this game tight while also having a chance to win outright.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Over 56

My reason for the prediction :

While both teams in this contest are mediocre, as apparent by their records, along with possessing mediocre talent on the offensive side of the ball, I will pick the over in this contest simply because their defense possesses much less talent and even less of an ability to stop anyone from scoring.  In fact, the Cornhuskers are allowed 38 points this season while allowing 40 or more points in three of there last four outings.  On the other hand, the Golden Gophers are allowing just 25 points per game for the season, yet have given up 40 points in their last three games as well.  In all, look for some points to be scored in this game in what will be a back and forth affair amongst two awful defenses that will make two mediocre offenses look very outstanding.
