Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Indiana Hoosiers vs Minnesota Golden Gophers
The Indiana Hoosiers will go on the road in week nine to play the struggling Minnesota Golden Gophers at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Friday night at 8 pm EST. The Hoosiers are coming off a 33-28 road loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions last Saturday as they played really well in taking the lead late in the third period before two Trace McSorley touchdown passes that allowed the Nittany Lions to retake control of the game. The Golden Gophers lost their fourth straight game as they suffered a 53-28 road loss to the reeling Nebraska Cornhuskers last Saturday as their defense allowed a whopping 383 yards rushing to a Nebraska rushing attack that struggled throughout the season. These teams have not met since November 2, 2013 as the Gophers picked up the slim 42-39 road win as they also covered the spread as 7.5 road dogs. In fact, Minnesota has covered in four of the last time meetings versus the Hoosiers while the home team is 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings, overall.
Indiana Hoosiers's Latest Performance :
Indiana also began the season in a winning way as they picked up wins in four of their first five contests; However, they are currently allowing over 40 points to their opponents in three straight losses, leaving them in next to last place within the Big Ten east division. They have, nonetheless, gone 2-1 ATS during their last three games while the over has been the case in each outing, primarily due to their defense playing so inconsistently. They would allow their lowest point total in the past three games in allowing 33 points to the Penn State Nittany Lions as they picked up the five-point loss in their last time out. The Hoosiers outgained Penn state by a 554-417 margin while their rushing attack pounded the defensive unit for the Nittany Lions for 224 yards with Stevie Scott having 138 yards with two touchdowns in the game. Peyton Ramsey threw for 236 yards along with a touchdown and an interception in the loss. The Hoosiers did, however, have three turnovers in the game to which they simply could not recover from.
Minnesota Golden Gophers 's Latest Performance :
Minnesota moved to 0-4 in the conference as they were beat down by a 1-6 Nebraska team last Saturday that managed to hang 53 points on a defense that is allowing 29 points per game on average. Also, the Cornhuskers offense, that has played awful all season, had over 650 yards of offense while torching the rush defense for the Golden Gophers for 383 yards in the matchup. And while Minnesota ended with 474 yards, QB Zack Annexstad left the game with an abdominal injury after throwing for only 135 yards along with a TD, leaving Tanner Morgan under center who passed for 214 yards and an interception. Tyler Johnson led the receiving corps with 184 yards on 11 catches while Mohamed Ibrahim rushed 18 times for 49 yards and a TD. After beginning the season 0-3, the Golden Gophers have not been able to keep opponents out of the end zone in allowing 43 points per outing during their four-game skid. Going up against a slumping Indiana team that has lost their last three games can be their saving grace if they are able to get their defense in sync.
How Indiana Hoosiers & Minnesota Golden Gophers Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Indiana is 3-5 ATS while the OU is 5-3
Minnesota is 4-3 ATS while the OU is 4-3
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This game will be hard to call in that you have two teams that have both hit rough patches lately and will certainly want to get a win in which to stop the bleeding, even if its only temporarily. Something one can be sure of is that there will be some points put on the board in that Minnesota and Indiana have both allowed major points in their last couple games and this will likely be the case in this matchup. Again, look for Indiana to test the pass defense for the Minnesota Golden Gophers as they are allowing 239 yards per game. Also, the while the Minnesota defense has been middle of the road this year, expect them to have some type of success versus a defense for Indiana that can be shaky on both sides, as proven by their lackluster efforts lately.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Indiana Hoosiers +2.5
My reason for the pick :
I will back the Hoosiers in this matchup simply because despite their losing streak, they continue to possess a decent passing attack while the Golden Gophers are allowing 240 yards in their pass defense. And while the Gophers won the last outing in 2013, expect for them to get back on track with a win in this instance as Minnesota may indeed be done (literally) for 2018, particularly if Annexstad has not fully recovered in time for this matchup. In all, Indiana played well versus a Penn State team and will certainly cover the plus points over a Minnesota team that seems ripe for the pickings.
Totals Selection: Pick: Over 54.5
My reason for the prediction :
The over has been the play in the last three games for Indiana, as stated, while it has been the result in three of the last four games for the Golden Gophers. Again, their offenses have been awful in recent matchups, yet the reason for the over results are a direct result of their defenses not being able to stop their opponents running and passing games. With that being the case, look for the scoreboard to light up early and often versus two mediocre offenses that will capitalize on terrible defenses that have been dominated lately.
