Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders vs Old Dominion Monarchs

The Blue Raiders of Middle Tennessee State University will travel to Foreman Field in Norfolk, Virginia, to battle the Old Dominion Monarchs on Saturday afternoon at 3”30 pm EST.  These teams last met on November 25, 2017 as the Blue Raiders picked up the 41-10 home victory while covering as 13.5 favorites.  Middle Tennessee comes into the game winners of three of their last four games with their last victory coming at the expense of the Charlotte 49’ers as they picked up the 21-13 home win despite being outgained 359-144 for the game.  Nonetheless, two touchdown passes from Brent Stockstill and a fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchdown proved to be the difference for the Blue Raiders in the victory.  The Old Dominion Monarchs halted a three-game skid in picking up a 37-34 road win over Western Kentucky last week as a Nick Rice field goal sealed the victory for a Monarchs team that won their first conference USA game this year.

Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders's Latest Performance :

Middle Tennessee State has been just the opposite of the Monarchs as they are winners of three of their last four games with their average margin of victory being only eight points.  They are directly on the heels of the Thundering Herd of Marshall along with Florida International who are 3-0 and 3-1 in the Conference USA Eastern division.  They have not played well on the road this season as they are losers of three of their four games this year as they averaged only 17 points while allowing 33 points to their opponents.  They would, however, pick up a huge victory over the Charlotte 49’ers last Saturday as they scored 14 points in the second quarter as Brent Stockstill threw two touchdown passes to allow the home team to take control of the matchup en route to a victory.  Their defense allowed the 49’ers only 3.8 yards per rush while the passing attack, led by Evan Sheriffs with 209 yards and a TD, had two interceptions in the loss.

Old Dominion Monarchs 's Latest Performance :

Old Dominion won their first conference game of the year as they were 37-34 road winners over Western Kentucky last Saturday as the Monarchs scored 18 points in the fourth period as Blake Larussa and Kesean Strong each scored on a passing and rushing touchdown along with a 26-yard field goal by Nick Rice, which turned out to be the winning score of the game.  Old Dominion racked up 508 total yards for the contest with the rushing attack having 181 yards with Strong finishing with 125 yards along with two TD’s while LaRussa threw for 327 yards and a score in the win.  Finally, Travis Fulgram leading the receiving corps with 102 yards and a TD catch in the slim victory.  The defense for the Monarchs allowed 207 yards rushing while the pass defense allowed 257 yards through the air along with two scores as Davis Shandley ended the game going 24 of 31 for the day.  Old Dominion had lost three straight prior to their win last Saturday yet have allowed 34 points or more in their last five games.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Both offenses have struggled this year with consistency, however, it can be said that the Monarchs certainly possess the much better passing attack as they are putting up 306 yards per game.  Of course, they will be looking to challenge a pass defense for the Blue Raiders that allow 228 yards per outing to their opponents.  And while the Blue Raiders are awful in their rushing attack in being ranked 84th in the nation in their passing game, the Monarchs are equally as terrible in allowing over 500 yards of total offense per game to their opponents.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Middle Tennessee State -4

My reason for the pick :

I will back the Blue Raiders in this contest as I envision them taking advantage of a Monarch defense that allows well over 200 yards rushing per game while also giving up almost 300 passing yards.  Of course, Middle Tennessee has struggled in their offense all season yet they have found ways to win football games recently.  In all, expect them to find a way in which to win this matchup versus a potent passing game for the Monarchs while also covering the spread.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Under 60

My reason for the prediction :

The Blue Raiders will certainly have the advantage coming into this matchup which allows me to take the under in this matchup as this has been the play in four of their last five game while being the result in three of their last four road games, overall.  Expect them to give up an early score or two versus a passing attack for Old Dominion that has had success recently, however, also expect the solid defense for the Blue Raiders to dominate after the first half en route to yet another huge victory to where the total will not surpass 60 points.
