Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Tennessee Volunteers vs South Carolina Gamecocks

The Tennessee Volunteers will travel to Williams Brice stadium in Columbia, South Carolina, to face the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday night at 7:30 pm EST.  The Gamecocks have lost two of their last three games with the last being a 26-23 home loss to the Texas A&M Aggies as Jake Bentley’s three touchdown night was ruined by a 353-yard night for Kellen Mond who also threw a touchdown pass in the win for the Aggies.  The Volunteers were blown out by the Alabama Crimson Tide in their last outing by a 58-21 score as the Tide went up 42-14 at the half while cruising to an easy SEC victory.  The last time these team met was on October 14, 2017 as the Gamecocks picked up the 15-9 road win while covering as 2.5-point underdogs.  The under is 4-1 in the last five meetings amongst these teams while the Volunteers are 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings in South Carolina.  Finally, the underdog is 6-0 ATS in the last six meetings, overall.

Tennessee Volunteers's Latest Performance :

The Tennessee Volunteers never had a chance versus the Alabama Crimson Tide last weekend as they only racked up 248 total yards while giving up 545 to the Tide in their third defeat in four outings.  Furthermore, each of these losses entailed their opponents scoring at least 38 points with Alabama’s total of 58 points being the highest number of points allowed this year.  Nonetheless, Keller Cryst threw for 164 yards along with two touchdown passes while Jauan Jennings caught six passes for 102 yards in the losses for the Vols.  The good news for Tennessee is that they won their last road game versus Auburn by a 30-24 score while covering the spread as 14.5 underdogs.  However, their offense has grinded to a halt lately as they are putting up only 21 points in their last four outings, overall.  In addition to this, they may experience problems matching up versus a South Carolina team that is stout in the pass defense while only allowing 26 points per game this year.

South Carolina Gamecocks's Latest Performance :

The Gamecocks continue to exchange wins for losses with each week that passes as they are once again .500 on the year at 3-3.  They are also par for the course at home as they have won two while losing two, with their last defeat coming at the hands of the Aggies of Texas A&M last weekend.  After being down 16-0, the Gamecocks fought back in which to tie the game at 16 all; However, the Aggies got a field goal from Seth Small along with a three-yard touchdown run from Trayveon Williams to take a ten-point lead.  Of course, the Gamecocks attempted to battle back with a late touchdown, yet, the writing was on the wall as they went down in defeat while falling to 4th place in the SEC East.  Jake Bentley ended the game with 233 yards passing with three touchdowns and an interception while Deebo Samuel led the receiving corps with 88 yards on seven catches for the game.  The rushing attack could only muster 78 yards as Ty’Son Williams led with 48 yards on seven carries for the day.  The Gamecocks are 1-2 in their lasts three home games as they have allowed opponents to score an average of 35 points during this time.

How Tennessee Volunteers & South Carolina Gamecocks Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Tennessee is 3-4 ATS while the OU is 4-3

South Carolina is 3-3 ATS while the OU is 3-3

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This will be a matchup amongst the 4th and 5th place teams in the SEC east as the Volunteers seek a win on the road while the Gamecocks simply look to get a win in which to go over .500 yet again for 2018.  As one can see, both teams have been very inconsistent this year, particularly on offense.  That being said, with both defenses are allowing less than 400 total yards per game, signaling yet another struggle on offense for both the Vols and Cocks this weekend.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  South Carolina Gamecocks -7.5

My reason for the pick :

I will give the edge to USC in this matchup as they seem to play much more competitively at home while also having the much better defensive unit that can neutralize the playmakers of Tennessee over the course of the matchup.  In all, expect the Gamecocks to go over .500 for the 4th time this year in hopes that they can somehow use the momentum as they go into the rest of the season to where they can utilize it against Ole Miss and Florida, their remaining SEC teams.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Under 54.5

My reason for the prediction :

As stated, South Carolina has the better defense and has allowed opponents to 22 points per game in their last four outings.  The problem has been their offense that has not been able to stay on the field due to not being able to convert on third down along with an inability to take advantage of offensive opportunities.  Nonetheless, the under has been the play in three of the last four games for USC, whom I feel carries the bulk of the momentum heading into this matchup, so, I will back the under as the strong play as a result.
