Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Ball State Cardinals vs Toledo Rockets
The Ball State Cardinals will travel to the Glass Bowl Stadium in Toledo, Ohio, to battle the Toledo Rockets for a MAC showdown on Wednesday night at 7:30 pm EST. The Cardinals lost their third game in three outings last weekend as they fell by a 52-14 score on the road to the Ohio Bobcats as their inconsistent offense along with three turnovers spelled their doom versus a Bobcats team that racked up 554 total yards for the game. Toledo went to .500 in overall record as well as in the MAC with a 51-24 win over the Broncos of Western Michigan as they got five total touchdown passes from two different QB’s while their rushing attack collected 268 yards on the ground in the win, thus halting a two-game skid. The last meeting between these teams was on October 26, 2017 as the Rockets picked up the 58-17 road win while also covering as 26.5-point road favorites. In fact, the road team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings amongst these teams while the Cardinals are 6-0 ATS in the last six meetings in Toledo. Finally, the under is 5-1 in the last six meetings at the Glass Bowl.
Ball State Cardinals's Latest Performance :
Ball State lost their second straight game while allowing 40 or more points for the second time in as many games to the Ohio Bobcats. They also failed to cover the spread for the second consecutive game as they allowed the Bobcats to destroy them on the ground in racking up 411 total yards rushing for an average of 7.2 yards per rush. The Cardinals could only muster 80 yards for the game, yet they had three turnovers for the day while their passing game put up only 162 yards in the contest as Drew Pitt (86 yds, INT) and Riley Neal (76 yds, TD) struggled throughout versus a stout Bobcats defense. Neal is questionable with a knee injury for the contest as this will certainly impact their 58th ranked passing attack. Despite this, the Cardinals offense is reeling at this point of the season as they are only averaging 17 points per game while their defense is allowing 34 points during their current skid. And while Toledo has struggled this year as well, in their four wins on the season, they have put up 50 or more points.
Toledo Rockets's Latest Performance :
Toledo was 4.5 road underdogs versus Western Michigan in their last outing, however, jumped on the Broncos early at home to go up 23-17 at the half. Thanks to three touchdown passes by Eli Peters, the Rockets were able to shock the home team with a blowout victory, thus keeping them alive within the MAC West as they are currently in third place within the division. Peters ended with 107 yards along with three TD passes, as stated, while Mitchell Guadagni threw for 140 yards along with two TD’s, but, is questionable for this game with a shoulder injury. Toledo also dominated on the ground with 268 yards led by Bryant Koback with 99 yards and a touchdown while Cody Thompson had three pass touchdowns on 63 yards receiving on the day as his total for the year rose to nine TD passes.
Toledo has struggled on the defensive end this year and it showed in this matchup as it allowed not only 125 rushing yards to the Broncos, but, QB Kaleb Eleby (293 yards, 2 TD’s) along with Jayden Reed (103 yds, six rec, 2 TD’s) paced the Broncos on offense. Toledo’s remaining schedule entails two home games with the Cardinals along with the Central Michigan Chippewas (1-8) along with road games versus the Kent State Golden Flashes (1-7) along with their next game being on the road versus the top seeded Northern Illinois Huskies (5-3).
How Ball State Cardinals & Toledo Rockets Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Ball State is 4-5 ATS while the OU is 3-6
Toledo is 3-5 ATS while the OU is 6-2
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The Cardinals look to somehow turn the tables in getting a road win in this contest, however, it will not be easy as the Rockets are an explosive team offensively. Furthermore, with their win over the Broncos last weekend, look for the home team, which are 2-1 in their last three home contests, to be brimming with confidence along with motivation to get a win. As stated, with a win over the second place Western Michigan Broncos last weekend along with a looming matchup versus the Huskies of Northern Illinois, the Rockets have an outside chance of winning the MAC West. With that being said, they will have to take care of the cellar teams in Ball State, Central Michigan, along with Kent State to have a chance.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Toledo Rockets
My reason for the pick :
I will back the Rockets to pull out a convincing victory in this contest as they will certainly be much more motivated to get a win in this matchup, particularly after they were given new life with a win over second place Western Michigan in their last time out. Also, the Cardinals are coming in with the 111th ranked rush defense in the nation and will be going up against a Rockets team that averages over 200 yards per contest. Judging from the way the Bobcats had their way with them in their last outing, look for the Rockets to pound them in this area all game long while also utilizing their passing game on a pass defense that allows over 200 yards per game as well.
Totals Selection: Pick: Over
My reason for the prediction :
With the Cardinals giving up yards on the ground like candy, expect the Rockets explosive offense to allow their ability to efficiently run the ball impact their passing game as well. Also, for a Ball State team that allows well over 400 yards of total offense to their opponents per game, expect there to be more of the same as they go against a Toledo squad that is also averaging well over 400 yards total per game. The Rockets are averaging 40 points per game and I see them really obtaining an impressive win on Wednesday night, thus propelling them into the second place slot overstepping the Broncos in the MAC West with a win.
