Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Northern Illinois Huskies vs Akron Zips
MAC action will continue to heat up on Thursday night as the top seeded team in the MAC West in the Northern Illinois Huskies will travel to InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field in Akron, Ohio, to face the fourth ranked team in the MAC East in the Toledo Rockets beginning at 7 pm EST. The Rockets have won two straight division games after beginning 0-2 and have outside aspirations of making some noise within the division after picking up a 17-10 win over the Central Michigan Chippewas in their last time out. On the other hand, Northern Illinois continue to play stellar as they picked up their fourth straight win last Saturday in squeaking out a slim, low scoring 7-6 road win over the BYU Cougars to which they won despite only gaining 204 yards on the day along with racking up 80 yards in penalties. The last meeting amongst these teams dates to October 12, 2013 as the Huskies picked up the 27-20 home win while the Zips covered as 24-point road underdogs. The road team, in fact, is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings amongst these teams, overall.
Northern Illinois Huskies's Latest Performance :
Northern Illinois has struggled also on offense this year as they are only putting up 17 points per game while their defense is allowing 21 points per outing to their opponents. As stated, their saving grace has been their play within the division as they have put up 23 points per game while allowing 18 points to division opponents. Their offensive struggles continued on the road versus BYU last Saturday as they only scored a touchdown thanks to a Marcus Childers one yard run early in the third quarter which proved to be the difference as they picked up their fourth straight win. With their offense struggling regularly, the defense for the huskies have had to carry the weight in allowing just 18 points per game to their opponents during their winning streak. The Huskies were afforded a bit of breathing room as second place Western Michigan lost last weekend, however, Akron would love nothing better to upset the Huskies at home, where they have won two of three this year.
Akron Zips's Latest Performance :
Akron has remaining matchups with both of the top two teams within the MAC East division in Northern Illinois and Ohio, yet lost to the Miami, Ohio RedHawks, its third-place team, earlier in the season in a 41-17 home blowout loss. With that being the case, they are beginning to play well at a great time as they have won two straight games despite their offense continues to labor in averaging just a tad over 20 points per game. The defense has been their saving grace as they have allowed just 16 points per outing during this time. They allowed the Chippewas of Central Michigan only ten points on the day as they would shut down their offense in the first half while allowing them to tighten the lead in the third. Nonetheless, they put the clamps on the Chippewas offense in the fourth quarter while only permitting them 2.7 yards per carry in the rushing attack along with 4.3 yards per catch. The offense for Akron struggled in putting up 152 yards rushing with Van Edwards Jr leading with 96 yards and a TD while Kato Nelson threw for 149 yards and a passing TD in the win for an offense that is only putting up 22 points per game for the year. In fact, the offense for the Zips are ranked in the 100’s in every major offensive category this year.
How Northern Illinois Huskies & Akron Zips Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Northern Illinois is 4-4 ATS while the OU is 1-7
Akron is 3-4 ATS while the OU is 2-5
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
Look for both teams to come out focused in this matchup as Northern Illinois will want to create some space between the rest of the division with a win. On the other hand, Akron seeks to continue their recent play in the division while picking up their second upset in as many weeks in defeating the top seeded Northern Illinois Huskies at home to go over .500 in the division. This could very well be a trap game for the Huskies with Toledo playing well defensively to compensate for their lack of offense. In all, expect this to be a low scoring and competitive matchup to where either team will have a chance to pull out the victory in the end.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Northern Illinois Huskies -5
My reason for the pick :
Akron should be giving much credit for winning two straight division games, however, those wins came at the expense of a Kent State team along with a Central Michigan squad that have won a combined 2 games on the year. The Huskies are a much different team and one that knows the importance getting a win in what will be a raucous environment. In other words, the Huskies will certainly understand that they cannot overlook this Akron team that has gained much confidence lately in winning some close contests. With that being the case, look for them to pull out a close victory on the road as their offense will perform much better than they did in their last outing.
Totals Selection: Pick: Under
My reason for the prediction :
The under was the play in the last outing amongst these two teams while also being the play in two of the last three home games for the Zips. Furthermore, the under has been the play in four straight games for the Huskies, thus signaling that the under is indeed the strong play in this contest. As stated, both offenses have labored this year and as they matchup up against defenses that have had to be stout all season due to a severe lack of offensive output, expect the defensive line to rule the line of scrimmage in this MAC contest, thus allowing the total to remain under its set total.
Betting trends for Northern Illinois Huskies:
- Under is 4-0 in Huskies last 4 games overall.
- Huskies are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game.
- Under is 4-0 in Huskies last 4 conference games.
Betting trends for Akron Zips:
- Zips are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game.
- Zips are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up win.
- Zips are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 Thursday games.
