Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Temple Owls vs UCF Knights
The Temple Owls will travel to Spectrum Stadium in Orlando, Florida, to battle the 10th ranked Knights of Central Florida University on Thursday night for a showdown beginning at 7:30 pm EST. The last time these teams met, the Knight pulled away with a 45-19 road win on November 18, 2017 as they also covered as 13.5-point road favorites. In their last outing, the Owls won their third straight game in picking up a 24-17 home win over the Cincinnati Bearcats on October 20, 2018 as Anthony Russo shook off a shaky night to where he threw three interceptions by finding Isiah Wright for a 25-yard touchdown pass (his 3rd of the day) in overtime to seal the victory. The Knights remained undefeated on the season in picking up a 37-10 road win over the Pirates of East Carolina on October 20th to where their rushing game powered in 316 rushing yards on the ECU defense while collecting five turnovers for the day in the win. The over has been the play in four of the last five games amongst these two squads, overall.
Temple Owls's Latest Performance :
The Bearcats on put up 3.3 yards per catch on the pass secondary for the Owls in their last time out yet rushed for 200 yards on a rush defense for the Owls that gives up 193 yards per outing, good for only 93rd in the nation. And despite three interceptions by Anthony Russo, as stated, the Owls were kept in the game by three turnovers by Cincy in the contest while also having three touchdown passes by Russo with the final being the game winner to seal the victory, their fifth in six games. Temple is averaging 30 points per game on the season yet has only put up 24 points per game in their last two outings. On the other hand, the defense has continued to improve in allowing just 17 points per outing to their opponents during this time. They were dominated by the Knight in their last matchup and would like nothing better than to turn the tables on an undefeated UCF team that has dominated their opponents on their home field this year.
UCF Knights's Latest Performance :
Central Florida’s offense kept their streak alive of scoring 30 or more points in each game this season as they rolled over the East Carolina Pirates on the road in their last outing despite being outgained 496-427 on the day. They did, however, collect four turnovers along with allowing just 2.4 yards per carry on the ground to the Pirates, yet, the home team put up 406 passing yards as Holton Ahlers threw a TD pass along with an interception. The Knights also returned a fumble for 94 yards for a TD in the contest.
In all, it was not a pretty game for Central Florida as they collected 121 yards in penalties while their passing game only racked up 111 yards total with Darriel Mack Jr leading the way with 69 yards in the air; However, their rushing attack kept them competitive in putting up 316 yards led by Mack Jr with 120 yards and a TD. QB McKenzie Milton is probable for this game after suffering an ankle injury as their 30th ranked passing attack will look to get cranked up once again versus a Temple offense that is allowing just 148 yards passing per outing to their opponents.
How Temple Owls & UCF Knights Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Temple is 6-2 ATS while the OU is 3-5
UCF is 5-2 ATS while the OU is 2-5
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
Both temple and UCF stand at 4-0 in the AAC, thus making this game a very interesting one. As stated, the Owls have a revenge factor coming into this game as the Knights manhandled them last year; However, QB Milton will be back under center for this game so they must ensure that they are able to bring their pass defense along with them as they will certainly be tested early and often. The rushing game for the Knights have been their bread and butter for the year as they are averaging 261 yards on the ground per game awhile the Owls have struggled this year in stopping the run, as stated. Nonetheless, with so much on the line, look for the intensity to be there from both squads as they each will be vying for the top spot within the AAC East division.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: UCF Knights
My reason for the pick :
Much respect should be given to the Owls for cleaning up their act on both sides of the ball after a disastrous non-conference schedule which saw them go 1-3 in 2018, however, I will bank on the Knights to pick up a home win in this matchup simply due to the fact that they will not only have home field advantage, but, that Milton will be back under center in which to test the pass secondary of the Owls. Expect the home team to come out focused on the defensive side of the ball in which to bottle up the rushing attack for Temple while pressuring Russo for much of the game. In all, the Knights have the talent along with the incentive to play well at home in this matchup and I feel as if they will show and prove in this division matchup to remain in the top spot.
Totals Selection: Pick: Under
My reason for the prediction :
While the under was the play last year, I will also back the under in this matchup in that it has been the play in two of the last three road games for the Owls while also being the result in three of the last four home games for the Knights (4-0 in last four games overall). Again, look for the Knights to neutralize a shaky run game for the Owls while pressuring their QB constantly in which to allow him to make quicker throws. Of course, the whole idea will be to keep their offense off the field while allowing a punishing rushing attack for the Knights to keep the clock and chains moving.
