Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Pittsburgh Panthers vs Virginia Cavaliers
The Pittsburgh Panthers will travel to Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia, for an ACC matchup versus the Virginia Cavaliers on Friday night beginning at 7:30 pm EST. The Panthers are coming off a 54-45 high scoring victory over the Duke Blue Devils as they punished the Blue Devils on the ground to the tune of 484 yards for the game with Quadree Ollison (149 yards, TD) along with V’Lique Carter (137 yards, 2 TD’s) leading the charge in the win. The Cavaliers were also 31-21 home winners over the lowly UNC Tar Heels last Saturday as they were also dominant in the running game in obtaining 208 yards on the ground while also getting 217 yards in the air along with three TD passes from Bryce Perkins in their third straight win. The last time these teams met, the Panthers picked up the 31-14 home win as they covered as slim, one-point favorites on October 28, 2017. The favorites are 5-1-1 ATS in the last eight meetings amongst these teams while the Panthers are 3-1-1 ATS in the last five games, overall. The under has been the play in three of the last five meetings as well.
Pittsburgh Panthers's Latest Performance :
Pitt 22nd ranked rushing attack was dominant yet again last weekend as they put up almost 500 yards on the ground versus division foe Duke at home. Kenny Pickett also threw for 2 TD’s along with Ollison and Carter leading their ground attack versus a Duke team that got four touchdowns from Daniel Jones in the game as he found three difference receivers for touchdowns. Also, Pitt’s porous defense allowed 223 rushing yards to the Blue Devils in the game while its 94th ranked pass secondary gave up 386 yards to Jones and the passing attack for Duke as well. As one can see, their defensive unit, that allows 30 points per game to their opponents, has not been very effective for the Panthers this year; However, their rushing attack has been stellar in keeping them in games. In fact, their rushing game has been the catalyst in catapulting them to the number 3 slot within the ACC Coastal division with a date with the top ranked Cavaliers on Friday night.
Virginia Cavaliers's Latest Performance :
With their win over the Tar Heels last weekend, the Cavaliers not only became bowl eligible, but, were able to take over the top spot within the Coastal division of the ACC by sidestepping the Virginia Tech Hokies. And while they have a season ending matchup with the Hokies, they must continue to win, beginning with their matchup versus the Panthers, who are winners in two of their last three games. The Cavaliers rely heavily on their ability to play solid defense throughout the ball game as they showed in their last outing to where they allowed only a 3 yard per carry average to UNC on the ground while allowing 271 yards along with two touchdown passes to Nathan Elliott in their win last weekend.
On the other hand, their offense was led by Perkins who not only threw for 217 yards along with three TD’s for the game, but, rushed for 112 yards along with a rusting TD as well. Jordan Ellis, which leads the team in rushing (683 yards, 7 TD’s), also had 64 yards on 16 carries for the game. The Cavaliers have especially been strong at home in their last three outings as they have allowed their opponents only 12 points per game while the offense has put up 25 points per win. Again, look for a sense of revenge on the part of the Cavaliers to enter this matchup as they were destroyed by the Panthers last year.
How Pittsburgh Panthers & Virginia Cavaliers Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Pittsburgh is 4-4 ATS while the OU is 4-4
Virginia is 7-1 ATS while the OU is 4-4
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This game will also have many implications, most importantly, division positioning. As stated the Cavaliers wrestled the top spot away from the Hokies due to their win last week over UNC; However, the Panthers continue to hang around and find themselves at 3-1 within the division with a chance to increase their positioning with a win over Virginia in week nine. Also, the Panthers have had much success against this UVA squad in recent matchups and will certainly look to test a Cavs defense that allows just 113 yards total on the ground per outing. Of course, this will be the best chance at victory for the Panthers as the passing game only puts up 146 yards in the air per game, good for only 121st in the nation.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Virginia Cavaliers -7.5
My reason for the pick :
I will back the Cavaliers in this matchup as I happen to believe that after they finally obtained the number one spot, they will work extra hard to maintain it. This means neutralizing a punishing rushing attack for Pitt that continues to get better as the season wears on. They also have the revenge factor going as well and they will certainly want to get the monkey off their back from having little to no success facing this Pitt team in the past. In all, expect the Cavaliers to take control of this game on both sides as Pitt is a one trick pony on offense while their defense has been horrible all year.
Totals Selection: Pick: Under
My reason for the prediction :
I will back the under in this matchup as the Cavaliers will certainly put the clamps down on a Pitt offense that can only rely on their rushing attack to win games. As stated, with the Cavaliers allowing just a tad over 100 yards rushing per game, expect them to look to shut down the attack early and often while bringing the pressure to Pickett and a passing attack that continues to struggle in 2018. The under has been the play in two of the last three road games for the Panthers while also being the play in two of the last three home games for the Cavaliers. In all, take the under as the strong play in this contest on Friday as the Cavs will present their tough brand of football for all to see.
