Western Kentucky Hilltoppers vs Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders
The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers will travel to Johnny Red Floyd Stadium in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to take on the Blue Raiders of Middle Tennessee State on Friday night beginning at 8 pm EST. The Hilltoppers come into this matchup on a four-game skid with their last loss being at the hands of the Owls of Florida International by a 38-17 score at home. Middle Tennessee State comes into the matchup winners of four of their last five games while beating up on the Old Dominion Monarchs on the road by a 51-17 score as they went in at the half with a 31-10 lead and cruised to victory behind 208 rushing yards along with 280 passing yards on the day. The last time these teams met was on November 17, 2017 as the Hilltoppers picked up a three-point home victory as they prevailed 41-38 over the Blue Raiders in a pickem contest. The home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings amongst these teams while the over is not only been the result in each of the last six meetings, but, in four straight in Tennessee.
Western Kentucky Hilltoppers 's Latest Performance :
Western Kentucky, on the other hand, resides in the cellar of the division as they have only won one game all season. They are currently 0-4 within the conference and would certainly love to change their fortunes versus a Middle Tennessee squad they have had some success in facing recently. The Hilltoppers have been a huge disappointment on defense as they have allowed at least 35 points in each of their last three games, all against conference opponents. On the other hand, the offense has only put up 21 points during this time, as they are ranked 123rd in points scored per outing with 19.8 point per game.
Florida International scored 38 on the Hilltoppers on the road in their last outing as they got three touchdown passes from QB James Morgan while also having 119 rush yards along with two rushing touchdowns from D’Vontae Price to seal the victory. The Hilltoppers collected 168 yards rushing on the day with Joshua Samuel leading the way with 83 yards on 14 attempts, however, the passing attack only put up 105 yards with Davis Shanley having no passing TD’s on the day. Surprisingly, the passing attack was supposed to the tip of the spear for Western Kentucky this year as they are ranked 59th nationally in averaging 240 yards per game. In every other major category, they are ranked in the 100’s.
Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders's Latest Performance :
Middle Tennessee had little to no trouble putting away the Monarchs of Old Dominion in their last outing as Bryan Stockstill finished the game with 280 yards, 2 TD’s, along with an interception as he found Gatlin Casey (4 catches, 90 yards, TD) along with Ty Lee (5 rec, 69 yards, TD) for scores in the win. The rushing attack was led by Terrelle West who ended the game with 120 yards on the ground along with a TD as the rushing attack averaged 5.5 yards per carry.
The defense for the Blue Raiders continued to struggle in allowing 187 yards on the ground to the Monarchs while also giving up 330 yards passing along with two TD’s; However, QB Blake LaRussa also threw three interceptions in the loss in a game were the Monarchs turned the ball over five times. Despite their 51 points versus ODU, the Blue Raiders have had a rough go of it lately on offense as they had only averaged 21 points in their two games prior to their matchup with the Monarchs. Their defense, which has not been stellar all season in allowing well over 400 yards of total offense to their opponents, has been their saving grace lately in allowing just 20-point in their last five games as they are currently sitting in the second place slot within the CUSA East standings.
How Western Kentucky Hilltoppers & Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Western Kentucky is 4-4 ATS while the OU is 4-4
Middle Tennessee State is 4-4 ATS while the OU is 3-5
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
Middle Tennessee, with a loss already to the top seeded Florida International Owls earlier in the season, must win out in which to maintain their positioning while also finishing up the season on a strong note. The Hilltoppers, on the other hand, simply looks to pick up their first win in over a month; However, doing this versus a Blue Raiders team whose defense has played much better recently will certainly be a tasked for their dismal offensive attack. And with the Blue Raiders going 3-0 on the season at home, this may well be another long night for at team that is allowing over 400 yards per outing along with 30 points.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders -13.5
My reason for the pick :
Look for the home team to blow this game wide open early on as the Hilltoppers have shown little to no signs of life on offense in their last few outings. And while the Blue Raiders have also labored to put points on the board lately, look for them to take advantage of their opportunities versus a Western Kentucky team that has allowed opponents to score within the mid 30’s and above in three straight games. In all, the Blue Raiders will maintain their positioning with the CUSA East division with an easy win over a Western Kentucky team that has seemingly called it in for the season.
Totals Selection: Pick: Over
My reason for the prediction :
The over has not only been the play in last year’s matchup amongst these two squads but has been the play in three straight outings for Western Kentucky while being the result in two of the last four for the Blue Raiders. Also, with the Hilltoppers given up points like Candy recently, expect the Blue Raiders to really increase their points per game average in this matchup while building from the 51 points that they racked up in their last outing versus the Monarchs.
