Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

BYU Cougars vs Boise State Broncos

The BYU Cougars will travel to Albertson’s Stadium in Boise, Idaho, to battle the Boise State Broncos on Saturday night at 10”15 pm EST.  The Cougars are coming off their third loss in four outings as they dropped a game to the Northern Illinois Huskies at home by a 7-6 score last weekend as they could get nothing going on offense while also converting only 20% on third down conversions for the game.  On the other hand, the Broncos won their third straight in picking up a 38-28 road victory over the Air Force Falcons in their last time out as they got five touchdown passes from Brett Rypien in the victory.  The last time these teams met was on October 6, 2017 as the Broncos picked up the 24-7 road win as they covered as seven-point favorites.  The under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings amongst these two teams while the cougars are 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings, overall.

BYU Cougars's Latest Performance :

BYU averages only 22.8 points per game; However, in their last four games, have score in single digits twice including in their last home matchup versus Northern Illinois as they were only able to post two field goals for the game while their rushing attack, which put up 93 yards, averaged 2.3 yards per carry with Matt Hadley having 38 yards on nine carries.  Zack Wilson threw for 208 yards along with an interception in the contest as the Cougars put up 301 total yards for the game while converting only three of 15 third down attempts for the game.  The loss was their third in four outings as they offense posted an average of 20 points while the defense allowed 27 points per game during this time.

In fact, the defense for BYU has been the tip of the spear for the Cougars all season as they are ranked in the top 50 in every major defensive category.  However, the lack of offensive output has certainly put them in terrible positions to where they must perform near perfectly for the team to get a win.  Nonetheless, with an offensive juggernaut in Boise state as their next opponent, they will certainly have to bring the focus and intensity.

Boise State Broncos 's Latest Performance :

Brett Rypien torched the defense for Air Force with five touchdowns along with 399 yards in the Broncos last outing.  Of course, with the Falcons coming into the game with the 101st ranked defense in defending the pass, one should not be surprised at the results, however, Boise state’s Alexander Mattison rushed for 136 yards and a TD against Air Force’s 16th ranked rushing attack as well.  Finally, John Hightower and Sean Modster combined for 14 catches for 283 yards with Hightower having three TD’s to lead the receiving corps.

On the other hand, Isiah Sanders was the only offense for the Falcons as he threw for 210 yards and two TD’s while rushing for 97 yards and a TD in the loss. Boise State is ranked second in the Mountain West behind Utah State, to whom they have a matchup looming at the end of the season, and they must continue to win.   Their defense should certainly lead the way in this contest as BYU has been awful on offense in ranking low in every major offensive category for the season.

How BYU Cougars & Boise State Broncos Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

BYU is 4-4 ATS while the OU is 2-6

Boise State is 4-3-1 ATS while the OU is 5-3

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Boise state needs to win this weekend to set up an all-important matchup with Utah State to end the season, however, BYU has a stingy defense and will certainly not oblige very well.  The problem with the Cougars, as stated, have been their offense, which has simply not been cohesive or tough within the trenches all season.  With that being said, the Cougars, who are 2-1 on the road this season, will travel to meet a Boise Sate team that has been shaky at home this year in losing to SDSU while beating Colorado State in their last outing at Albertson’s Stadium.  Nonetheless, expect this to be an interesting matchup as the Cougars will attempt to play spoiler to a team that beat them by over three touchdowns last year.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Boise State Broncos -13

My reason for the pick :

Due to a severe lack of offense on the part of BYU, there is no way that they can stay in this game for four periods.  Of course, the defense will fight valiantly, however, the Broncos are a potent team offensively.  Furthermore, with Rypien throwing for 300 yards in their last two games while having 9 TD’s along with no picks during this time, the Broncos will roll at home and pick up their fourth straight victory.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Over 55

My reason for the prediction :

As stated, the Cougars will remain in the game for a quarter of two, however, the Broncos will become acclimated to their defensive game plan and will commenced to blow this game wide open.  The Broncos have score 30 or more points in six of eight games this year while scoring 48 or more in their last two.  As stated, Rypien is on fire at this time and will certainly ensure that the over will be the strong play in this contest.

Betting trends for BYU Cougars:

  • Under is 7-1 in Cougars last 8 games after allowing less than 275 total yards in their previous game.

  • Under is 6-1 in Cougars last 7 games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game.
