Penn State Nittany Lions vs Michigan Wolverines
The 13th ranked Penn State Nittany Lions will travel to Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to face the 5th ranked Wolverines on Saturday afternoon at 3:45 pm EST for an all-important Big Ten battle. Penn State got back on the winning track against Iowa at home as they picked up the 30-24 win as the defense for the Nittany Lions picked off Nathan Stanley twice while allowing the Hawkeyes only 350 yards for the game in the victory. The Wolverines were also winners in their last time out as they picked up a 21-7 win versus the Michigan State Spartans on October 20th as their defense also shined in allowing the Spartans only 15 yards rushing along with just 79 yards passing while recovering a fumble in the win. Penn State dominated Michigan in their last meeting by a 42-13 score on October 21, 2017 as they also covered as 7.5 home favorites. In all, the favorite is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings amongst these teams while the over is 5-1 in the last six meetings, overall.
Penn State Nittany Lions 's Latest Performance :
Michigan is coming off a bye week after taking care of their rival, Michigan State, in their last outing as their defense was the catalyst for the win in allowing .6 yards per rush to the Spartans while allowing Brian Lewerke to pass for only 66 yards on a five for 25 day. LJ Scott also struggled in the backfield in putting up 25 yards on ten carries. Shea Patterson, on the other hand, passed for 212 yards along with two TD’s while Karan Higdon rushed for 144 yards on 33 carries in the win for Michigan, their seventh straight. Michigan has dominated their opponents at home as their average win has been by 35 points. Also, they are 4-1 ATS at home for the year while the over has been the play in four of five games for Michigan this year.
And while their rushing game has punished opponents this year in ranking 33rd in the nation, they will certainly need a bit more out of their passing offense this week as Penn State has been stout in defending the rush while giving up 225 passing yards per outing to their opponent.
Michigan Wolverines 's Latest Performance :
Iowa dominated the Nittany Lions during the first half of their last outing. When the game ended, the Hawkeyes finished with 135 yards on the ground while Nathan Stanley passed for 205 yards, but, his two interceptions signed the death nell for the road team as they each came on promising drives. Trace McSorley also threw a pick six in the game as this allowed Iowa to tighten the Penn State lead to 27-24 with early in the fourth period. Nonetheless, Jake Pinegar iced the game with a 44-yard field goal with 8:24 remining in the game as Iowa would not threaten for the remainder of the contest.
So, after losing two straight Big Ten games, the Nittany Lions have won two straight games climb back into the thick of things within the Big Ten East division at number three, just behind Michigan and an OSU team who put them away at home to begin their two-game slide. Nonetheless, Penn Sate can put themselves back into the picture with a win versus the Wolverines. However, this will not be easy as Michigan possesses a defense that ranks within the top 8 in the country as it relates to every major defensive category.
How Penn State Nittany Lions & Michigan Wolverines Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Penn State is 5-3 ATS while the OU is 6-2
Michigan is 5-3 ATS while the OU is 4-4
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This will be a hard-hitting, tough matchup amongst teams that will certainly run the ball often. This is my reasoning for remarking that both passing attacks with Patterson and McSorley will certainly need to step up in which to create opportunities within the passing game, as both defenses are stout versus the run. In all, look for this to be a low scoring matchup that will be won within the trenches. Furthermore, I happen to believe the passing game will indeed win this matchup for one of these teams.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Penn State Nittany Lions +10
My reason for the pick :
I will back the road team in this game in that while the Wolverines have been unstoppable at home this year, the Nittany Lions are undefeated on the road as well while covering two of their three games. Both teams are similar in that they each possess powerful rushing attacks while having underwhelming passing attacks. Furthermore, they are each backed by defenses that are solid in both the pass and the run. With that being said, ten points is too much to take with the home team in this instance as I feel as though Penn State, due to their rushing attack along with McSorley and company catching some breaks within the passing attack, will keep this game tight while having the chance to pull out the victory.
Totals Selection: Pick: Under 52.5
My reason for the prediction :
With both defenses playing lights out all season long, look for there to not be many points scored in this matchup. In fact, this game will be a battle within the trenches throughout as neither team will be able to maintain any type of momentum for much of the game. Nonetheless, the contest will come down to taking advantage of opportunities within the passing game. With that being the case, look for the both offenses to struggle as the point total will stay well below the set limit for this game.
