Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Texas State Bobcats vs Georgia State Panthers

The Texas State Bobcats will travel to Panther Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, to battle the Georgia State Panthers on Saturday at 2 pm EST in a Sun Belt showdown.  The Bobcats are coming off a 27-20 win over the New Mexico State Aggies in their last outing to where they collected two turnovers for the game while racking up 230 rushing yards while halting a five-game losing streak.  Georgia State lost their third game in a row as they fell at home by a 37-34 score to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers last weekend as both teams rallied in the second half to take touchdown leads before Massimo Biscardi kicked a 23-yard field goal for the Chanticleers to claim the three-point victory with 2:54 minutes remaining in the game.  The last time these teams met, the Panthers picked up the slim, 33-30 road win on November 11, 2017 yet the Bobcats covered as 5.5-point home underdogs.  The over has been the play in two of the last three games amongst these two teams.

Texas State Bobcats's Latest Performance :

Texas State halted a five-game losing skid in their last outing as they were able to get a seven-point victory over the New Mexico State Aggies as their offense struggled, yet its defense was solid throughout in the victory.  Nonetheless, the Bobcats went up 27-13 early in the third while their defense held the Aggies to converting seven of 22 third downs for the game along with collecting two turnovers for the game.  Furthermore, the Bobcats allowed just 4.7 yards per catch for the Aggies passing attack yet gave up 153 yards on the ground for the contest.

Texas state, on the other hand, racked up 230 yards for the game as Willie Jones III rushed for 110 yards and a TD while throwing for 113 yards and two TD passes.  Of course, Jones III played outstandingly in their last outing, starting QB Tyler Vitt should return from illness this weekend which caused him to miss the last game.  Nonetheless, the Bobcats are 4-1 ATS in their last five games despite their offense only putting up 20 points per game during this time.

Georgia State Panthers's Latest Performance :

Georgia State’s defense continued to give up points in their last matchup versus Coastal Carolina as they allowed 37 along with 476 total yards with 251 being on the ground as Torrance Marable had 128 yards and a score in the win for the Chanticleers.  QB Fred Payton threw for 225 yards along with a TD as the passing attack averaged 12.5 yards per catch.  The offense for the Panthers certainly played well enough to win as their rushing attack racked up 290 yards on the ground with Tra Barnett had 161 yards on eleven carries with two touchdowns while QB Dan Ellington threw for 231 yards along with a TD pass in the loss.  Penny Hart had 118 yards and a score in defeat for the Panthers, their third straight loss.

The Panthers allowed at least 37 points in their last three games and 30 or more points in six of their eight games in 2018.  Their lack of defense affected the way in which they were able to cover in 2018 as they are 2-5-1 ATS.  Their defensive stats may improve this weekend as Texas State is ranked in the 100’s in every major category and are averaging just 22 points per game.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This Sun Belt game will entail the cellar team in the East division against the cellar team in the west division.  As stated, the Bobcats have had their fair share of troubles on the offensive end this year, however, the Panthers are giving up too many points to their opponents and they may certainly find success in this contest.  The Bobcats, on the other hand, have a much better defense that is allowing just 24 points per game in their last five outings.  In all, look for this to be an interesting matchup amongst teams that have differing philosophies as it relates to both sides of the ball.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Texas State Bobcats +5.5

My reason for the pick :

I will back the Bobcats in this contest as they have a much better defense, as stated.  And while their offense has struggled all season, particularly in their last few games, their starting QB should be returning from illness for this matchup.  Also, if Vitt should not return, Jones III did a fantastic job in filling in for Vitt in the last matchup and should have an even better day for the Bobcats.  In other words, expect the Bobcats to keep this game tight throughout as Texas State is 2-0 ATS in their last two road games.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Under 52

My reason for the prediction :

The under was the play in the last three games for the Bobcats while being the play in two of the last three home games for the Panthers.  Again, with the type of defense that the Bobcats possess, look for the under to be the strong play in this matchup.  Finally, the strength of the Panthers offensive assault lies in their ability to pass the football, to which to Bobcats are ranked 36th in the nation in allowing just under 200 yards per game.

Betting trends for Texas State Bobcats:

  • Bobcats are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games on turf.

  • Bobcats are 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game.

  • Bobcats are 1-6-1 ATS in their last 8 games following a straight up win.

Betting trends for Georgia State Panthers:

  • Panthers are 0-4 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.

  • Under is 5-0 in Panthers last 5 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.

  • Panthers are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games after allowing more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game.
