Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

West Virginia Mountaineers vs Texas Longhorns

In an all-important Big 12 matchup, the 10th ranked West Virginia Mountaineers of West Virginia will travel to Darrel K Royal Stadium in Austin, Texas to battle the 15th ranked Texas Longhorns on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 pm EST.  The Mountaineers come into the game fresh off a 58-14 home win versus the Baylor Bears as they put up 568 yards total for the game while racking up 396 passing yards in the victory.  The Longhorns halted a six-game winning streak by coming up short versus the Oklahoma State Cowboys by a 38-35 thriller on the road as Taylor Cornelius put up 321 yards passing en route to the win.  Their last matchup saw the Longhorns win by a 28-14 score as they covered as three-point underdogs.  The under has been the play in the last two games amongst these teams while West Virginia has covered in two of the most recent three matchups, overall.

West Virginia Mountaineers's Latest Performance :

West Virginia rebounded from a 30-14 road setback to a tough Iowa State team the week prior by beating up on the Baylor Bears in their last outing at home to where Will Grier threw for 353 yards and three touchdown passes as David Sills V along with Gary Jennings Jr both went over 100 yards receiving for the game.  Tevin Bush led the rushing attack with 79 yards on only one rush as the attack averaged 5.2 yards per carry.  Baylor could simply get nothing going on offense with their high-powered offense being limited to 287 yards total for the game as their rushing attack averaged 2.3 rushes per carry while the passing attack only had 205 yards with Corey Brewer throwing three interceptions in the loss for the Bears.

In all, despite the Mountaineers going 1-2 ATS in their last three games, they continue to dominate on offense in averaging 36 points per game during this time.  Look for them to certainly test the Longhorn’s pass defense that is really giving up big plays within the backend of their defense all year.

Texas Longhorns's Latest Performance :

The Longhorns Sam Ehlinger was back in the lineup after an injury as he threw for 283 yards along with two touchdown passes to two different receivers for Texas while their rushing attack had 119 yards on the ground with Keontay Ingram leading with 52 yards on 11 carries.  Nonetheless, Texas struggled in defending the pass as Cornelius passed for three touchdowns in the contest while the rushing attack put up 181 yards for 3.5 yards per carry.  Texas is only 1-4 ATS in their last five games and while the Texas offense has been off and on during this time, they continue to put up an average of 31 points per game.

They will certainly need to bring their A game on both sides of the ball versus the Mountaineers as they are averaging 40 points per game while the Longhorns continue to struggle in defending the pass in allowing 245 yards per game.  As stated, Texas picked up the win in last year’s matchup which means that the Mountaineers will be looking for payback.

How West Virginia Mountaineers & Texas Longhorns Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

West Virginia is 5-2 ATS while the OU is 3-4

Texas is 3-5 ATS while the OU is 4-4

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The Longhorns are the top seed in the Big 12 while the Mountaineers will seek to step over the Sooners, the second ranked squad in the conference, with a win on Saturday.  Their defense is allowing only 19 points per game this year and will certainly be challenged by the Longhorn offense that is averaging 31 points per game along with 406 total yards per game.  With that being said, this will be a battle throughout as both teams will be looking to continue their success on the season while maintaining, or, increasing their position with the conference.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  West Virginia Mountaineers +2

My reason for the pick :

While I respect the Longhorns for what they have accomplished this season, I happen to believe that offense will certainly win this game.  With that being said, I will back the Mountaineers and the points on the road versus a Texas team that has not played consistently in their pass defense all year.  Also, with Grier continuing to be on fire, expect him to have a solid game in the passing attack for this game.  And while WVU has an average rushing attack, they will be up against a Texas defense that is ranked 36th in the nation.  In all, expect the road team to get just enough out of their rushing attack to keep the Longhorns from teeing off on Grier while he will continue to make plays, when needed, in the passing game with his talented playmakers on the outside.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Under 68

My reason for the prediction :

While I believe that there will indeed be some points scored in this matchup, I will back the under for this contest as both defenses are allowing are allowing a combined 22 points per game to their opponents in 2018.  Also, with so many things at play in this contest, expect the defenses to be front and center in neutralizing the offenses just enough to keep the score below the total set.
