Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Toledo Rockets vs Northern Illinois Huskies

The Toledo Rockets will take on the Northern Illinois Huskies on Wednesday night at 8 pm EST in an all-important MAC showdown at Huskie Stadium on Dekalb, Illinois.  The Rockets are coming off a 45-13 home win over the Ball State Cardinals as both their passing and rushing attacks were seemingly clicking on all cylinders while their defense collected five turnovers for the game.  The Huskies continued their winning ways by also picking up a win by a 36-26 score versus the struggling Akron Zips on November 1st.

And while their offense came into the game with issues with scoring in recent weeks, they put up 36 on this night while their defense sealed the victory with a pick six.  Toledo picked up the win the last time these two teams met by a 27-17 score as the Rockets were able to cover as big favorites (-7.5).

Toledo Rockets's Latest Performance :

Toledo won their second in a row over Ball State in their last outing and find themselves ranked third within the West Division of the MAC conference.  With a win over 2nd place Western Michigan earlier in the season, a potential win over the Ohio Bobcats, the West top team, will not only increase their positioning in the conference, but, put them into the top spot.  Needless to say, they must understand the situation while showing that they are indeed taking things on a game by game basis.   They certainly displayed this with a convincing win over the Cardinals in their last time out.  The Rockets put up 21 points in the first quarter while utilizing a rushing attack that garnered 204 yards on the ground led by Art Thompkins with 13 att, 84 yards, TD) and Bryant Koback (15 att, 78 yards, 2 TD’s) while Diontae Johnson led the receiving corps with 100 yards on five catches.

The Rockets possess a balanced offensive attack that averages 40 points per game in 2018 along with a defense that has been susceptible to giving up yards, particularly passing yards, this year.  On the other hand, the rushing defense for the Huskies will certainly need to step up in this contest as they are allowing 172 yards per outing.

Northern Illinois Huskies 's Latest Performance :

Northern Illinois has been able to maintain its top seeded rank within the MAC West division by winning.  In fact, with their win over Akron in their last time out, the Huskies were able to create some space between themselves and the 2nd ranked West division team in the Broncos (to which they face on the road in three weeks).  Nonetheless, this team has won five straight games while covering well in the meantime (4-1 ATS in last five).  And while their offense does not score many points, their defense has gained a reputation of keeping opposing offenses at bay with their play.  In 2018, they have allowed just 21.7 points per game while also being ranked 12th in stopping the run.  In fact, they only held Akron to 35-yard rushing for the game for a 1.3 yard per carry average.

The Huskie rushing attack, however, is averaging 167 yards per game and led by Tre Harbison who had 169 yards along with a TD in their road win over Akron.  QB Marcus Childers threw a touchdown pass yet only passed for 188 yards total.  The Rockets are also a potent offense in ranking 11th in the nation in points with 41.4 ppg while also having a rushing attack that puts up over 200 yards per game.

How Toledo Rockets & Northern Illinois Huskies Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Toledo is 4-5 ATS while the OU is 6-3

Northern Illinois is 5-4 ATS while the OU is 2-7

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Look for the Huskies to really come out strong in this matchup.  You have a defense for the Rockets that is very suspect in the backend along with a team in Northern Illinois that simply does not throw the ball much.  On the other hand, the rushing attack for the Huskies will certainly look to rule the trenches early and often as the Rockets defense has been middle of the road in stopping the run all season.  Of course, the offense for Toledo may indeed run into issues with such a strong defense in the Huskies as they have allowed just 17 points on average in their last four games.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Northern Illinois

My reason for the pick :

I will back the Huskies in this game as they have the type of defense that can slow down the red-hot Toledo offense.  Of course, the Rockets came out with a ten-point win over Northern Illinois last year, so, there could also be a revenge factor in this game as well for the home team.  Most importantly, look for them to establish themselves both in the running game as well as on the defensive end.  With that being said, look for Toledo to keep this game within range for a while, however, the Huskies will indeed pull away at some point.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under

My reason for the prediction :

Expect for the Huskies at home to have the momentum from the outset.  Also, with the under being the result in not only their last matchup, but, also in three of the last four home games for Northern Illinois, the under is indeed the strong play in this matchup.  Combine this with a Huskie defense that continues to get better as the year progresses, look for the total to not surpass its mark in this matchup.
