Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
BYU Cougars vs UMass Minuteman
The BYU Cougars will travel to Warren P McGuirk Alumni Stadium in Amherst, New York to battle the UMass Minutemen on Saturday night at 12 pm EST. The Cougars fell to the Boise State Broncos in their last outing by five as they suffered a 21-16 road loss as their offense continues to sputter at critical moments and with three fumbles lost within the matchup, they were doomed at Albertsons Stadium. The Minutemen suffered a 62-59 home win over the pass happy Liberty Flames as they racked up 777-yard total for the game while they won their second straight game. The last time these teams met was on November 18, 2017 as the Minutemen picked up the 16-10 road win as UMass took advantage of four turnovers by the Cougars as they sealed the win as 3.5 road underdogs.
BYU Cougars's Latest Performance :
The Cougars lost their second straight and fourth in five games as they fell on the road to
the Broncos of Boise State by five points. Their offense was dismal, as always, as they only put up 96 yards on the ground while their passing attack, led by Zack Williams, had 272 yards in the air while rushing for the only TD for the Cougars. And despite their struggles on offense, their defense ensured that the Broncos struggled as well as Brett Rypien and their explosive offense were out-gained by an anemic offense for BYU 388-327 as Rypien passed for 214 yards, a TD, along with an interception in the win. And even with two turnovers, the Broncos were able to convert third downs to the tune of 57% in the game which led to them getting the much-needed victory.
UMass Minuteman's Latest Performance :
The Minutemen are 4-6 for the season, yet, are ranked second in the Independents division behind the Black Knights of Army. Both are 1-0 in the conference; however, Army ranks first due to overall record (7-2). The offense for UMass has put up 35 points per game this season as they possess the 15th ranked passing attack in the nation in putting up 311 yards per game. They also rank 27th in total yards per game with 458 yards per outing. With that being said, they exhibited their offense prowess versus the Liberty Flames as the passing game was led by Ross Comis with 540 yards along with four TD’s in the win, with three going to Andy Isabella who had 303 yards receiving on nine catches.
Their rushing attack put up 237 yards on the ground with Marquis Young having 148 yards along with two touchdown runs in the game, his second 148 rushing game day in two weeks while he has three TD’s in the last four outings for the Minutemen. Stephen Calbert for Liberty threw for 272 yards along with two touchdowns yet had four picks on the night as the Flames offense was only a flicker of itself, particularly with the turnovers. Nonetheless, the Minutemen’s passing attack must be able to lead the team to victory versus a BYU team that is very solid on defense. In fact, they have allowed just 14 points int their last two outings.
How BYU Cougars & UMass Minuteman Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
BYU is 4-4 ATS while the OU is 2-6
UMass is 3-6 ATS while the OU is 6-3
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The Cougars are 2-3 ATS in their last six games while the Minutemen are 2-0 ATS in their last two games to where they put up an average of 42 points. Their defense, however, has been the weak link for this team in 2018 as they are allowing 41 points per game this year. On the other hand, BYU’s defense has been critical for the Cougars as they are ranked in the top 30 within every major defensive category while their offense has struggled mightily this year in ranking in the 100’s in point scored (22), rushing yards (130), along with lowest yardage per game at 333 yards per.
In all, this will be a game of two teams with contrasting styles which essentially means that the Minutemen offense will compete versus a stout BYU defensive unit while the struggling offense for BYU will take on the porous defense of UMass. The team that will win will be able to take advantage of their opportunities.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: UMass Minutemen
My reason for the pick :
I will back the Minutemen in this instance simply because the Cougars have had nothing going on offense the past few weeks. They continue to struggle at the point of attack while simply looking overwhelmed at certainly points in the game this year. Of course, they will likely capitalize on their current offensive woes with such a horrible defense in UMass. So, look for the Minutemen to take advantage of a fatigued defense for BYU as their offense will not be on the field long throughout the game.
Totals Selection: Pick: Under
My reason for the prediction :
I will back the under in this matchup as the Minutemen will not be able to do as they please on offense with an aggressive and quick defense as the Cougars. With that being said, look for the under to be the play in that the Cougars will want this game to stay low in which to give their offense a chance to win. That is, of course, if they decide to show up.
