Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Temple Owls vs Houston Cougars

The Temple Owls will battle the 17th ranked Houston Cougars at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in an AAC showdown on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 pm EST.  The Owls suffered a 52-40 road loss to the UCF Knights in their last time out due to 149 yards of penalties along with two interceptions by Anthony Russo.  The Houston Cougars halted a five-game winning streak by losing on the road to what is seemingly a red-hot SMU Mustangs squad by a 45-31 score to where the defense allowed Ben Hicks and the passing game for the Mustangs to put up 418 yards along with four TD’s in the win.  The last time these teams met was on September 27, 2017 as the Bulls got the 20-13 victory while also covering as 18-point favorites.

Temple Owls's Latest Performance :

While Temple rushed for 226 yards in their game versus the Knights, they allowed UCF to rack up over 300 yards on the ground while also allowing 312 yards along with three TD passes to McKenzie Milton in the loss.  While I can certainly see the Owls giving up yardage on the ground, their pass defense came into the game ranked in the top ten in defending the pass.  Nonetheless, they seek to write off what was a bad day at the office in squaring off versus the Cougars at home.  Temple is 3-0 ATS in their last three home games while putting up a 30-point average per contest.  Their defense only allowed for 13 points during this time which only contributes to the conclusion that the Owls are a much better team at home this year.

Their offense, however, alarms me in that Russo, despite throwing seven touchdown passes in this last two outings, has also had five picks during this time.  Nonetheless, Houston was exposed in their last matchup with the Mustangs that they are weak on the backend of their defense.  Furthermore, Russo and company will certainly take advantage of this.

Houston Cougars's Latest Performance :

The Houston Cougars rolled into University Park, Texas, looking to extend their current stellar play; However, they came out with a huge road defeat and one in which D’Eriq King and the passing offense for Houston was pedestrian as he passed for only 175 yards yet had two TD passes on the day.  Their total in passing yards was a far cry from their 316 per outing average for the year.  On the other hand, its 19th ranked rushing attack came under its total as well as its rushing as it fell nearly 40 yards shy of their per game average.  In all, Houston remains in the top of the AAC West division with the Mustangs continuing to be on their heels.

The Cougars were really exposed in their pass defense versus SMU as Ben Hicks threw for four TD’s and over 400 yards in the victory for SMU and torching the Cougars defensive backfield, which ranks 130th in the nation in defending the pass.  They are much better in stopping the run this year as Houston is allowing 160 yards per game to their opponent.  If the Cougars can pick up a win in this contest, look for them to have the inside track to winning the division with Tulane and Memphis remaining on their schedule after their bout with Temple.  In other words, Houston needs to shake off the effects of that loss very quickly as they will be facing a Temple team that will certainly be looking to have a much better performance on both sides after a bad loss to the Central Florida Knights.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Look for both teams for bring the focus and intensity for this matchup as the Cougars are fighting off SMU in the West division of the conference while the Owls seek to continue to win in which to overtake the Bearcats within the East division of the AAC while also praying for a collapse by Houston as they prepare to end their season.  This may indeed be that game as the secondary for the Cougars are not very good at all.  And while Russo continues to throw picks, he can certainly pick a defense apart as well.  In all, look for this to be a back and forth affair amongst two teams that know the ramifications of a win in such an important matchup.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Temple Owls

My reason for the pick :

Temple will keep this game tight on the strength of their ability to have success versus Houston’s shaky defense.  The Owls will attempt to utilize their rushing attack that is only putting up 144 yard per outing to keep the Cougar offense honest; However, will use their success to play off the passing game, which will ultimately be the undoing for Houston.  In all, this game will be a high scoring, back and forth affair to where the Cougars will bow out in the end.

Totals Selection: Pick: Over

My reason for the prediction :

I will pick the over in this contest in that you will have a Houston team that will want to perform well after their last lost versus a team in the Owls that look to also atone for their division loss to the Knights in their last time out.  The over seems only natural versus a Temple team that is averaging 32 points per game while the Cougars are also lighting it up this year offensively by being ranked 5th in the country with 47.7 points per game.  Also, their defenses have not been the best this year, so, expect the scoreboard to light up throughout this contest.

Betting trends for Temple Owls:

  • Houston is 4-2 ATS in its last 6 games

  • The total has gone OVER in 5 of Houston’s last 7 games

  • Houston is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 games at home

Betting trends for Houston Cougars:

  • The total has gone UNDER in 10 of Houston’s last 14 games at home

  • Temple is 6-1 ATS in its last 7 games

  • Temple is 8-1 ATS in its last 9 games on the road
