Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Purdue Boilermakers vs Minnesota Golden Gophers

The Purdue Boilermakers will travel to TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers in Big Ten action on Saturday at 3:30 pm.  The Boilermakers are coming off a huge 38-36 home win over the Iowa Hawkeyes in their last time out as Spencer Evans nailed a 25-yard field goal to seal the victory in what was a back and forth, exciting matchup throughout as both teams racked up over 800 total yards.

Purdue has a date with second seeded Wisconsin Badgers next weekend while dropping a game versus top seeded Northwestern Wildcats in week one by only four points in a 31-27 defeat at home.  With that being said, their chances of the Big Ten East crown is slim.  They became even slimmer after the Golden Gophers suffered a 55-31 road loss over the struggling Illinois Fighting Illini in their last time out with Tanner Morgan throwing two TD passes while Mohamad Ibrahim also have two scores on the ground in the loss, their fifth in six games.  Purdue picked up the 31-17 home win when these teams met last October as the Boilermakers are 502 ATS in the last seven games versus the Golden Gophers.  The over is 6-0 in the last six games at TCF Bank Stadium.

Purdue Boilermakers's Latest Performance :

Purdue went back and forth with a tough Iowa Hawkeyes team at home in their last outing as David Bough passed for four touchdown passes in the game along with 333 yards while Markell Jones led the rushing attack with 40 yards with a TD in the slim two-point win.  Nonetheless, the star of the game was receiver Terry Wright as he ended with 146 yards along with three touchdown catches, his first 100 yard receiving night of the year.  And while the Purdue offense does not possess an overly dominate rushing attack, Blough and company are ranked 7th in the nation in passing yards per game while the team continues to average 33 points per game.

Defensive wise, the 36 points they gave up to the Hawkeyes was the first time the Boilermaker defense gave up 30 points or more in five game.  In fact, during this time, they were allowing only 18 points per outing, overall.

Minnesota Golden Gophers's Latest Performance :

Minnesota, despite their last loss to the Illinois Fighting Illini, may still be playing for a bowl game this year; However, with Purdue coming up in the schedule along with a home game versus Northwestern and a road matchup with Wisconsin to end the season, they will certainly have a tough road to hoe.  Nonetheless, their offense has struggled throughout the season as they have a balanced attack that does not stay on the field long enough due to inconsistency.  They certainly played well enough to win over Illinois in their last time out as QB Morgan threw for 258 yards along with two scores in their last outing while Ibrahim chipped in two rushing touchdowns on 98 yards rushing night.

However, their defense, could not find any answers to a rushing game for the Illini that put up 430 yards on the ground for the day.  Minnesota is ranked 94th in the country in rushing yards allowed with 188 per game.  In all, the golden Gophers will look to make some headway versus a Purdue team that recovered nicely from their first Big Ten loss of the season to the Michigan State Spartans two weeks ago.

How Purdue Boilermakers & Minnesota Golden Gophers Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Purdue is 6-3 ATS while the OU is 5-4

Minnesota is 5-4 ATS while the OU is 6-3

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Look for this to be a game to where the Boilermakers will certainly come out with much more incentive to which.  They are currently in third place within the Big Ten East division with a date with the second-place team in Wisconsin next week.  With that being the case, they will certainly not need to overlook this Minnesota team that is 4-1 in TCF Bank Stadium this year.  Of course, the Golden Gophers will need to step up on defense to have a chance at winning this matchup as they have allowed 40 or more points in four of their last six games.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Purdue Boilermakers -12.5

My reason for the pick :

And while the Boilermakers may come in feeling a bit “entitled” to a win in which to battle second place Wisconsin next week, they will have to be able to take advantage of the vulnerabilities within the shaky golden Gopher defense as much as possible.  As stated, the Minnesota defense has allowed a ton of points lately, and I happen to believe that Blough and company will certainly exploit those areas.  And while the Gophers will be allowed to score in this game early on, look for Purdue to take control of this matchup over the course of the game while covering in the end.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Over 58

My reason for the prediction :

Aside from a few scores throughout the game, the Purdue defense should have a tight hold on the offense for the Golden Gophers on Saturday.  Furthermore, the Purdue offense will shine versus a defense in Minnesota that has truly stunk it up lately.  In all, the over is indeed the strong play in this matchup when one considers a talented Purdue offense battling a porous defense in the Gophers that simply cannot get teams off the field on third downs.
