Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Virginia Tech Hokies vs Pittsburgh Panthers

The Virginia Tech Hokies will travel to Heinz Field for an ACC matchup with the surging Pittsburgh panthers on Saturday afternoon beginning at 3:30 pm EST.  The Hokies lost their third game in four outings this past weekend as they fell at home to the tough, Boston College Eagles by a 31-21 score as Ryan Willis threw three TD passes in the contest, however, the Hokies’ normally stout defense could find no answers to a BC ground attack that kept racking up yards throughout the game to the tune of 219 yards for the day.

They not only dropped to third place within the Coastal division, but, will need two wins in their next three games in which to become bowl eligible.  The Panthers are the complete opposite as they have won three of four games and two straight after a convincing win over the tough-minded Virginia Cavaliers by a 23-13 score on the road as Darrin Hall carried the weight in obtaining 229 yards on the ground along with three rushing TD’s for Pitt in the game.  The Hokies are 0-4 ATS in the last four games versus Pitt while not faring well at all at Heinz Field in the past.  They would, however, pick up a 20-14 home win over the Panthers last year yet Pitt covered as 14 points underdogs.

Virginia Tech Hokies's Latest Performance :

Virginia Tech was dominated by the Boston College Eagles in the second half of their last contest thanks to two Travis Levy touchdown runs along with an Anthony Brown touchdown pass to seal the victory.  Nonetheless, it was the third time in four games that the Hokies defense allowed 30 points or more.  With that being said, the Hokies lost four of their last six games and will certainly be looking to find some success on the road as they are 3-1 SU in their last four roadies.  Ryan Willis had a solid game versus the Eagles in throwing for 281 yards along with three touchdown passes to three difference receivers.  He also rushed for 49 yards to lead the team.  Willis has thrown for over 200 yards in five straight games while accounting for 14 TD’s during this time next to only four interceptions.  Their problems stem from their lackluster defensive effort in 2018.

The defense is giving up over 400 yards of total offense per year to opponents while also allowing 28 points per game.  Again, while their offense is certainly not juggernauts at what they do, the team needs the defense to be much more solid than the numbers that the Hokies have put up thus far.  With that being said, they must shore up these vulnerabilities quickly to prevent themselves from being embarrassed by a Pitt team that is on a mission in the second half of the season.

Pittsburgh Panthers's Latest Performance :

After beginning the ACC slate at 1-1 through their first two outings, the Panthers have won three of their last four ACC meetings this year while propelling themselves to the top of the ACC Coastal with a 23-13 win over then-top seeded Virginia Cavaliers last Saturday.  Darren Hall was the man of the day for the Panthers as he rushed for 229 yards along with three touchdowns in the all-important win.  Kenny Pickett did not have the need to throw much in this outing due to the overall effectiveness of the rushing attack, however finished going seven of 14 for 61 yards total in the contest.  Pitt continues to ram their rushing attack down the throats of their opponents as they are averaging 230 yards per game.  This could certainly play in their favor as Virginia Tech is ranked 85th in stopping the run in allowing 178 yards per game to opponents.

The defense for Pitt has not exactly been stellar this year, but, has held their own all season long.  Nonetheless, they have allowed close to forty points per game to teams during their last three home games.  It will be interesting to see if a primarily passing offense such as the Hokies will find an advantage versus a pass secondary for the Panthers that are allowing almost 250 yards in the air per game.

How Virginia Tech Hokies & Pittsburgh Panthers Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Virginia Tech is 3-5 ATS while the OU is 4-4

Pittsburgh is 5-4 ATS while the OU is 4-5

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Pitt will be looking to establish themselves within the trenches early in which to unleash their rushing attack on a middle of the road rush defense in Virginia Tech.  On the other hand, the Hokies will also look to exploit the Panthers in their shaky pass defense which has giving up some big plays this season.  In all, look for both teams to have much to play for as the Panthers look to win the Coastal altogether while the Hokies simply look to end the season on a strong note.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Pittsburgh Panthers -2.5

My reason for the pick :

The Panthers will certainly be backed in this matchup as they will indeed perform well versus a one trick pony offense in Virginia Tech.  And while they have not performed well within the back-end of their defense, the Panthers will certainly look good enough to get to Willis early and often in which to get their offense off the field on third downs.  Also, look for the Pickett and company to have some success in the passing game for Pitt as well as the home team will indeed cover the small spread at home.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Under 51.5

My reason for the prediction :

I expect this game to be one where not many points will be scored due to two defenses who will come into the matchup focused on getting a huge win at a critical point within the season.  With that being the case, I will back the total to not surpass 51.5 points as both offenses are ball control offenses that rely on their rushing attack to open opportunities within the passing game.

Betting trends for Virginia Tech Hokies:

  • Hokies are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game.

  • Hokies are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall.

  • Hokies are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games on grass.

Betting trends for Pittsburgh Panthers:

  • Under is 4-0 in Panthers last 4 games after accumulating more than 200 yards rushing in their previous game.

  • Panthers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.

  • Panthers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games after accumulating less than 170 yards passing in their previous game.
