Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Florida State Seminoles vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The Florida State Seminoles will ravel to Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana, to face a foe to which they have not played in four years in the Fighting Irish for a 7:30 pm EST start. The Noles picked up the 31-27 home win in their last matchup on October 18, 2014 as the Irish covered as 9.5-point road underdogs. This game could potentially be much more one-sided when one looks at the overall body of work from both squads.
The Seminoles are coming off a 47-28 road loss to the NC State Wolfpack as they were pounded on the ground to the tune of 177 yards while also being torched in the secondary for three touchdowns by Ryan Finley in the loss. The Fighting Irish, on the other hand, remained unbeaten due to a 31-21 hard fought victory over the Northwestern Wildcats as Ian Book showed up once again with 343 yards total while the rushing attack racked up 121 yards total for the day. With the Seminoles looking to end their season on a high note while possibly getting to a bowl matchup, along with the Fighting Irish looking to remain undefeated on the year, both teams will have much to play for in this contest.
Florida State Seminoles's Latest Performance :
Florida State’s season continues to get worse with their recent road loss to the Wolfpack of NC State. The defense is allowing 56 points in their last two outings while the offense is only putting up an average of 19 points during this time. QB James Blackmon threw for 421 yards along with four TD’s for the Noles in their loss along with an interception while the rushing attack only racked up 24 yards for the game with Cam Akers only having 29 yards on ten carries. Tammorion Terry along with DJ Matthews combined for 15 catches for 275 yards along with 3 touchdown passes in defeat. They will certainly need to bring the same type of effort (and better), offensively, versus the Fighting Irish, who are only allowing 19 points per game to their opponents this year.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish's Latest Performance :
While Notre Dame has been clicking on all cylinders on both sides of the ball this year, they will suddenly look for leadership in their upcoming matchup against Florida State on Saturday. QB Ian Book will not suit up for the game due to a rib injury and the team will certainly be looking for its critical pieces to step up in his absense. The Irish come into the game with an offense and defense ranking in the top 50 in the country while their defense has allowed just 19 points per game in their last three outings. They allowed Northwestern just 249 yards total on the day in their last outing as Clayton Thorson only passed for 141 yards and a TD in the game while they bottled up the rushing attack in allowing just 2.1 yards per rush.
The offenses for Notre Dame racked up 121 yards on the ground while Book passed for 343 yards and two touchdown passes. Chase Claypool led the receiving corps with 130 yards along with a TD catch. Again, they will certainly be missing Book under center this week, which means they will have to rely much more on their 58th ranked rushing attack that is putting up 181 yards per game this year.
How Florida State Seminoles & Notre Dame Fighting Irish Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Florida State is 3-6 ATS while the OU is 6-3
Notre Dame is 5-3-1 ATS while the OU is 5-4
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This should be a game that the Irish should certainly win. However, Book will not be suiting up for this game, as stated, which will force the Irish to utilize their rushing attack much more. Dexter Williams leads the team in rushing this year and has four TD’s in the last two outings for Notre Dame. In all, they may well find some resistance from the Noles in that their defense is ranked 19th in the country in allowing just 114 yards per game on the ground. In all, this game just got much more interesting with QB Book being a no go.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Florida State Seminoles +16.5
My reason for the pick :
I will back the Seminoles in this game in that their passing attack came alive last week with Blackmon at the helm and this will certainly translate to this game. And while the Fighting Irish have been solid in their pass defense, the Seminoles with continue to test them to find opportunities within the passing attack. Again, with Book being out, the Noles will certainly crowd the line of scrimmage to bottle up the rushing attack for the home team in hopes of allowing the new QB to beat them with his arm.
Totals Selection: Pick: Under 53
My reason for the prediction :
And while the Noles will cover the spread in this game, look for the Notre Dame defense to step up this week with their offense being shorthanded. In all, the Irish will come out with a victory due to their ability to neutralize the FSU offense at pivotal points during the game while their offense will step up in commanding the trenches in which to get some scores on the board. Nonetheless, do not expect the total to surpass its limit.
