Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Texas Longhorns vs Texas Tech Red Raiders

Two struggling Big 12 teams in the Texas Longhorns and the Texas Tech Red Raiders will square off at Jones AT&T stadium in Lubbock, Texas, on Saturday night at 7:30 pm EST.  The Longhorns have lost two straight after a 42-41 heartbreaking home loss versus the West Virginia Mountaineers as their defense allowed Will Grier to find receiver Gary Jennings for a 33-yard touchdown pass with only :16 seconds remaining in the game to seal the victory.  The Longhorns have not played well lately on defense as they have allowed each of their last two opponents to score an average of 40 points per game.

The Red Raiders took it on the chin in their last outing as well in suffering a 51-46 home loss to the Oklahoma Sooners as they were also destroyed on the ground to the tune of 323 yards by a punishing OU attack while also allowing three touchdown passes to Kyler Murray of the Sooners.  In all, each team will each be looking to come out of their funk in this rivalry matchup on Saturday night.  The Red Raiders took the 27-23 road win over the Longhorns last year outright while cashing in as 7.5-point underdogs.  The Longhorns, however, are 4-0 ATS in the last four games in Lubbock.  The under has been the play in each of the last four games versus these teams.

Texas Longhorns's Latest Performance :

The Texas Longhorns have also been shaky on defense lately in allowing their last two opponents to score an average of 40 points per game.  Their offense, much like the Red Raiders, kept the Longhorns in their last game thanks to three touchdown passes by Sam Ehlinger who ended the game with 354 yards total.  Ehlinger also rushed for a touchdown in this game; However, the rushing attack was paced by Tre Watson with 80 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

Texas’ 38th ranked passing attack was led by Lil’ Jordan Humphrey along with Devin Duvernay combined for 15 catches for 243 yards along with a TD apiece.  Nonetheless, the defense could find no answers for a balanced attack that had the Longhorns on their heels the entire night.  They look to clean up the confusion versus the Red Raiders this Saturday.

Texas Tech Red Raiders 's Latest Performance :

The defense or the Texas Tech Red Raiders has suddenly been nonexistent as they are giving up 45 points per game during their two-game skid.  The offense has lived up to its ranking by putting up around 39 points per game, overall.  Nonetheless, with the defense struggling at this point, they will certainly need to shore up their vulnerabilities as they prepare for the Longhorns, who are ranked 38th in the country in the passing game while also putting up 156 yard per game on the ground.

The defense not only allowed 232 yards on the ground to their last opponent, West Virginia, but, also gave up 346 yards passing along with three TD’s to Will Grier and a potent Mountaineer offense.  The offense, as stated, continues to score points, however, Alan bowman who is questionable for this game after an injury during their last outing, and the 2nd ranked passing attack in the country will need the D to perform much better in which to give the Red Raiders a better chance to win.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Look for this game to be a battle throughout as the Longhorns and the Red Raiders will look to atone for their past play.  As stated, both teams have had a rough go of it lately while losing to physically tough team.  With that being said, do not be surprised if it takes a while for the teams to get warmed up in this contest.  The interesting thing in this game while be the passing attack.  While each team has passing attacks ranked in the top 50 in the country, they will be going up against awful pass defenses which signifies this may indeed be an over game waiting to happen.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Texas Tech Red Raiders +2

My reason for the pick :

Look for this to be a close game throughout.  The Red Raiders are 4-1 ATS at home in their last five games and will certainly give Texas all they can handle.  As stated, each of these teams have terrible defenses that are not effective at defending the pass.  With that being the case, look for the home team to keep the game close while covering the small spread as underdogs.

Totals Selection: Pick:  Over 62

My reason for the prediction :

Again, both teams rely on their passing attack to win games.  On the other hand, with two defenses that are not great in preventing the big play, look for this to be a shootout as both teams will have solid nights in the air.  Look for them both to mix in the rushing game as well as the total will surpass its set limit for this high scoring matchup.
