Ball State Cardinals vs Western Michigan Broncos
The Western Michigan Broncos return back to Waldo Stadium for their last home game of 2018 as the will welcome in an in-conference opponent in the Ball State Cardinals, opening kickoff is slated for 6:00 PM. Both teams are coming off a necessary bye as they both were on the receiving end of bad blows last go around.
Ball State Cardinals's Latest Performance :
The Ball State Cardinals have missed out on postseason play every single year since 2013 and things aren’t looking good for the Mike Neu and company as they currently sit at 3-7. Ball State is coming off a bye week but it was much needed after they got blown out at home against an average Toledo Rockets team. The QB play has been shaky ever since Riley Neal (11 TDs, 4 interceptions) went out with injury as redshirt sophomore Drew Plitt has been turnover prone. Plitt was able to shred the Toledo defense for 355 yards but that wasn’t before he threw 2 interceptions compared to only 1 touchdown which puts his season total at 4 interceptions and 2 TDs. The ground game was also nowhere to be found for the Cardinals which can be accredited to them playing catchup all game long. Top RB James Gilbert didn’t suit up for the Cardinals which means Malik Dunner was the lead back and the junior rushed for 48 yards and 1 TD which has his season total at 228 yards and 3 TDs. Riley Miller wasn’t phased by the QB change as the redshirt junior was able to rack up 106 yards and 1 TD. Miller has been absolutely amazing for the Cardinals this season as he leads the team with 51 catches for 713 yards and 5 TDs. The Cardinals received a huge game out of their inside linebacker Brandon Martin as the redshirt sophomore had a team-high 14 tackles and even brought down his first career interception. Although the defense got shredded for 45 points they were able to come up with 5 interceptions in the game.
Western Michigan Broncos's Latest Performance :
The Western Michigan Broncos are in position to make a bowl game after missing out on the postseason last year but they didn’t look like a bowl worthy team as they got smacked by the Ohio Bobcats 59-14. The Broncos have had to go without their starting QB Jon Wassink as the junior went down with an injury against Toledo which is a big blow to this offense. Wassink ends his season with 2009 yards through the air and 16 TDs as well as added 6 TDs on the ground. Freshmen Kaleb Eleby stepped into the starting role and has hit some growing pains especially against Ohio as he was only able to throw for 152 yards with 2 interceptions. The star running back LeVante Bellamy was unable to get going all game as the junior out of Indiana was only able to compile 42 yards. Bellamy has been the backbone of this Broncos offense as he is just short of 1000 yards with 907 and has contributed 5 TDs. Goal line RB Jamauri Bogan was able to get into the end zone for the 11th time this year which is a team-high. The Broncos top WR Jaylen Hall was also shut down by the Bobcats as the 662 yards & 8 TDs target was only able to get his hands on the ball 2 times for 13 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, junior DB Justin Tranquill was able to record 9 tackles which put his season total at 63. A reason the Broncos were shredded was that they were unable to get any type of pass rush going as they failed to record a sack.

Against The Spread Selection: Western Michigan Broncos
My reason for the pick :
This is a classic matchup of one team who is still fighting to improve their resume for a bowl game against another team who is injured and ready to move onto next season. Western Michigan may have 6 wins but they did last year and missed out on the postseason so the mission this year is to get that 7th win and secure an automatic bowl appearance. Eleby looked loss last game against Ohio but the freshmen did have a good game against Toledo when he first stepped into the starting role which gives me confidence he can shred a below average secondary like Ball State. The difference in this game for me is the fact that Bellamy is an absolute force when running the ball as he is one of the best in the nation and I just don’t think Ball State can stop the junior. Expect Western Michigan to win at home.
