Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Memphis Tigers vs SMU Mustangs

The SMU Mustangs return back to Gerald J. Ford Stadium for their season finale as they will welcome in fellow AAC foe in the Memphis Tigers, the opening kickoff is slated for 9:00 PM. SMU needs 1 more win to become bowl eligible but they still stand within striking distance for 1st place in the AAC West division while the Memphis Tigers are already bowl eligible but sit 4th in the West division.

Memphis Tigers's Latest Performance :

The Memphis Tigers have been the favorite in the AAC West the last couple of years but this year they have failed to meet expectations as they currently sit at 3-3 in the conference. The Tigers are coming off a much-needed victory as they were able to beat up on one of the worst teams in the conference as they took down the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes 47-21. Memphis was led by their star RB Darrell Henderson who compiled 166 yards and 2 TDs on 23 carries to put his season total at 1446 yards and 17 TDs. Henderson’s backup Patrick Taylor Jr. was also able to have a big game himself as the junior fell just short of 100 yards as he rushed for 96 yards and 1 TD. QB Brady White didn’t have a huge day through the air (184 yards & 2 TDs) but his favorite target WR Damonte Coxie was on the receiving end of 43% of Brady’s passes. Coxie had a team-high 6 catches for 110 yards which puts the redshirt sophomore at 949 yards and 7 TDs. The Tigers were also able to get a spark with their punt return unit as the electric junior John Williams returned a punt 72 yards for a TD in the 4th quarter. The Tigers were solid on the defensive side of the ball as they held the Golden Hurricanes to 252 total yards of offense. DL Jonathan Wilson was in the Golden Hurricanes backfield all game long as the 280-pound junior was able to sack the QB 2 times which put his season total at 3 sacks.

SMU Mustangs's Latest Performance :

The SMU Mustangs had a rough start to the season but Sonny Dykes has his guys heading in the right direction as they currently sit 2nd in the AAC West after starting conference play 4-2. The Mustangs were able to beat up on the laughing stock of college football in their recent matchup as they beat the UCONN Huskies 62-50 on the road. SMU had a big day on the ground as they had 2 running backs rush for over 100+ yards and at least 2 or more TDs. Junior Xavier Jones compiled the most yards as he had 133 yards and 2 TDs but his fellow classmate Ke’Mon Freeman sat just behind him with 116 yards and 3 TDs. Jones and Freeman aren’t even the lead backs in this Mustang offense as the duo came into this matchup combining for 325 yards and 2 TDs on the season. QB Ben Hicks continued his efficient start to the season as the junior was able to complete 19 of his 29 passes for 276 yards and 1 TD. Hicks has kept the turnover ratio down this season as he will be entering this game with only 4 interceptions compared to 16 TDs. Hicks favorite target in this game was no other than 5’11 WR James Proche who compiled 101 yards which puts his season total at 882 yards. The Mustangs will need to clean up the defensive side of the ball especially after letting a below average team like UCONN hang 50 points on their head. Sophomore safety Elijah McQueen led the way with 6 tackles while CB Kevin Johnson was able to come down with his first career interception.

Against The Spread Selection: SMU Mustangs

My reason for the pick :

This should be a fun matchup to watch on a Friday night with not much football as we have two high powered offenses going at it. I am taking the SMU Mustangs to win at home as they have been playing well ever since they lost to UCF especially at home. SMU looked terrible on defense against UCONN but they have shown flashes especially in the big time Houston win a couple weeks ago as the defense held one of the best offenses in the nation to 24 points. If SMU can replicate the same kind of success on the ground as they did against UCONN I think SMU will have no problem winning at home as they will still be in the race for the AAC West division.
