Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Arizona Wildcats vs Washington State Cougars

The Washington State Cougars will return home to Martin Stadium for a PAC-12 matchup against the Arizona Wildcats, the opening kickoff is slated for 10:30 PM. The Washington State Cougars is the one hope that the PAC-12 has to get into the College Football Playoff while the Arizona Wildcats have stayed afloat in the South division.

Arizona Wildcats's Latest Performance :

The Arizona Wildcats started off slow under 1st-year coach Kevin Sumlin as they started 0-2 but they have since been on fire and find themselves in 2nd place in the PAC-12 South. The Arizona Wildcats are coming off a necessary bye but the week before that they came up with a big win at home against the Colorado Buffaloes. The offense was clicking on all cylinders and a huge reason for that was because junior QB Khalil Tate was finally healthy. Tate was on the short list of preseason Heisman Trophy finalist and we saw exactly why against Colorado as he threw for 350 yards and 5 TDs. Tate has been hit or miss this season as he has only totaled 1954 yards and 19 TDs but that can be accredited to his injury or the new offensive scheme he has had to learn. The Wildcats also received a big game on the ground as redshirt sophomore J.J. Taylor was able to rush for 192 yards on 40 carries. Taylor was the backbone of this team when Tate was out with an injury as he has totaled over 1219 yards and 6 TDs on the season. The Wildcats had 6 different receivers with 40+ yards but redshirt junior Cedric Peterson had arguably the best game as he racked up 72 yards and a TD on 2 catches. The Wildcats were able to cause havoc on the Buffaloes offense all night long as they were able to compile 5 sacks throughout the game. LB Tony Fields was able to lead the way for the Wildcats with 10 tackles and a sack while DT Josh Brown had 2 sacks.

Washington State Cougars's Latest Performance :

The Washington State Cougars have been playing amazing football ever since they suffered a loss on the road against USC as they sit at 9-1 and have a chance to make the College Football Playoff. The Cougars have been led by East Carolina transfer Gardner Minshew who has placed himself into Heisman Trophy talks. Minshew showed us why he is one of the best QBs in the nation last week against Colorado as he threw for 335 yards and 2 TDs. Mike Leach has had a huge amount of trust in the grad transfer this season as he has attempted over 500 passes but it has paid off as he has connected for 3852 yards and 29 TDs. In their latest game against Colorado, Minshew was able to hook up with 12 different receivers which shows the depth of this team. Minshew’s top WR junior Dezmon Patton was able to lead the way for the Cougars as he brought down 8 catches for a total of 103 yards. Patton has taken a deep WR group by storm as he leads them with 724 yards but they have 3 other guys following him closely with 500+ yards. The ground attack has been a nice supplement for Minshew as redshirt junior James Williams added in 60 yards and a TD to put him at 437 yards and 9 TDs on the season. The defense was great for the Cougars against Colorado as they held the Buffaloes to 0 points after a 1st quarter TD. Freshmen DB Kedron Williams was able to come down with his first interception of the season which he returned 25 yards to put the Cougars in prime territory.

My reason for the pick :

Washington State is the clear-cut best team in the PAC-12 but their biggest matchup lies a week away as they will be facing their in-state rival in the Washington Huskies with the winner taking the PAC-12 North division. Arizona is still alive in the PAC-12 South and they need to win out to keep that dream alive so they will be focused an ready to go every game from here on. Arizona showed life on offense against Colorado as Tate had a career game. If Taylor and Tate are able to replicate their performance against Washington State there is no reason not to believe they can stay in a shootout with the Cougars. I will be backing Arizona in this game as I feel like Sumlin will have his squad motivated.
