Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Miami Hurricanes vs Virginia Tech Hokies
The Virginia Tech Hokies return to Lane Stadium after playing on the road last week as they will welcome in the Miami Hurricanes for an ACC matchup, the opening kickoff is set for 3:30 PM. The Virginia Tech Hokies and Miami Hurricanes were two of the favorites to come out of the ACC Coastal division but both teams have had down years and find themselves 4th and 6th in the standings.
Miami Hurricanes's Latest Performance :
The Miami Hurricanes started the season ranked 8th in the country but they now sit 6th in the ACC Coastal after falling to 2-4 in conference play. The Hurricanes defense has been strong but the area where they slack is on the offensive side of the ball as they have had inconsistency at the QB position. The Hurricanes are coming off a tough loss against the Georgie Tech Yellow Jackets as they were unable to get much going through the air. QB N’Kosi Perry was only able to connect on 14 of his 23 passes for a total of 165 yards, the redshirt freshmen also rushed for 38 yards on 6 carries. Perry has shown flashes of being good this season as he has 11 TDs compared to 5 interceptions but he has also been inconsistent. The rushing attack was unable to break for big plays in this game which has been how this offense has thrived this year. While the Hurricanes rushed for 3 TDs no RB was able to crack the 50+ yard mark as Cam’ron Davis led the way with 48 yards. The Hurricanes top WR Jeff Thomas had a solid game as he was able to rack up 84 yards on 6 catches to extend his season total to 531 yards. The defense was unable to stop the powerful ground attack of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets as they scored 27 points. LBs Michael Pinckney and Shaq Quarterman were able to pitch in 17 tackles but outside of that, there was little production. The Hurricanes also let the Yellow Jackets throw a long TD pass against them as they were pinched up on the run.
Virginia Tech Hokies's Latest Performance :
The Virginia Tech Hokies have not lived up to expectations this season and that may be because they had to replace a ton of starters on the defensive side of the ball as well as insert a new QB halfway through the season. The Virginia Tech Hokies are coming off arguably their worst loss in program history as they got steamrolled by the Pittsburgh Panthers 52-22. Kansas transfer QB Ryan Willis had a solid game for VTech as he threw for 231 yards and 3 TDs as well as led the way on the ground with 65 yards on 16 carries. Willis has played well all season long as he has a TD to INT ratio of 4:1 as well as have thrown for 1770 yards. The ground game was nonexistent outside of Willis 65 yards as their top RB Steven Peoples was held to only 49 yards on 10 carries. Peoples has been consistent all season long for the Hokies as he has racked up a total of 546 yards and 5 TDs but he was bottled up all game against Pitt. Willis was able to connect with junior WR Eric Kumah 6 different times for a total of 80 yards and 2 TDs which gives him 437 yards and 5 TDs on the season. Virginia Tech has traditionally been known for its stingy defense but they have failed to fall under that category this season by any means. Junior DB Reggie Floyd led the Hokies with a team-high 6 tackles while LB Dax Hollifield came away with the lone sack of the game.

My reason for the pick :
Coming into the season college football fans were excited about this game as it was lining up to be the ACC Coastal championship game with the winner making the ACC championship but as we know that is not the case. I am taking Miami in this matchup due to their defensive abilities while Virginia Tech has been unable to stop anyone. Miami still needs one more win to become bowl eligible and with a veteran-led defense, I think they take another step forward against a backup QB. The Hurricanes should have a big day on the ground whether its Dallas or Homer and they will pick up a big road win.
