Ole Miss Rebels vs Vanderbilt Commodores
The Vanderbilt Commodores return home to Vanderbilt Stadium after 3 straight road games as they will take on the Ole Miss Rebels in an SEC matchup, the opening kickoff is slated for 7:30 PM. Ole Miss isn’t eligible to make the postseason due to NCAA infractions while Vanderbilt needs to win out to have a shot at bowl eligibility.
Ole Miss Rebels's Latest Performance :
The Ole Miss Rebels are trying to regroup after the Hugh Freeze era and they have fought under 1st-year head coach Matt Luke but they have not been successful in conference play as they sit at 1-5. The Ole Miss Rebels went into arguably the hardest road environment in college football and they stuck with the Texas A&M Aggies most of the game but a 4th quarter collapse made this team drop the game 38-24. The Rebels have had a strong air attack and that can be accredited to senior QB Jordan Ta’amu and his deep WR depth. Ta’amu was able to shred one of the better defenses in the SEC for over 373 yards and 1 TD. That is just a short sample size of what the senior has done all season as he has thrown for 3374 yards, 17 TDs, and only 5 interceptions. Ta’amu did it without some of his top targets as D.K. Metcalf didn’t suit up for the Rebels and Dawson Knox was ejected for targeting. A.J. Brown has been the top WR for the Rebels all season and he showed exactly why against Texas A&M as he caught 6 passes for 127 yards to put him over the 1000-yard mark on the season. DaMarcus Lodge also had a big game for the Rebels as he was able to corral 6 catches for a total of 122 yards and a TD. The defense for the Rebels has been awful all season but before the 4th quarter of the Texas A&M collapse, they played well for the most part. Safety Zedrick Woods contributed 6 tackles but he was also able to return a fumble for a TD to give the Rebels a spark. Senior DB Ken Webster was also able to come down with his lone interception of the season.
Vanderbilt Commodores's Latest Performance :
The Vanderbilt Commodores have only made a bowl game one time in the 4 years that Derek Mason has been the head coach and if they want to extend that number to two they must win out. The Commodores have played tough all season long as they have taken Florida, Kentucky, Notre Dame, and more recently Missouri down to the wire. Vanderbilt are led by senior QB Kyle Shurmur and the veteran played well against Missouri as he was able to throw for 249 yards and 3 TDs. Shurmur has been responsible with the ball all season as he has thrown for 17 TDs compared to only 5 interceptions. The ground game was also fairly strong for the Commodores as Ke’Shawn Vaughn rushed for over 182 yards and a TD on 15 carries. The redshirt junior RB has been stellar for Derek Mason and company all season as he has rushed for 849 yards and 9 TDs through the first 10 games. Shurmur was able to connect with his favorite target junior WR Kalija Lipscomb 8 different times for a total of 99 yards and a TD. Lipscomb is having a stellar year for the Commodores as he has compiled 731 yards and 7 TDs. The defense for Vanderbilt was unable to do enough against the powerful Missouri offense as they gave up 33 points despite having 2 interceptions. Redshirt sophomore DB Frank Coppet contributed 6 tackles but he was also able to come down with his 2nd interception of the season. Dimitri Moore led the way in tackles as the redshirt freshmen LB racked up over 9 tackles.

My reason for the pick :
Both teams have been close all season to getting that big-time win there programs have been lacking the last few years but in this matchup, Vanderbilt has more to play for which will motivate them even more. The Rebels didn’t only leave Texas A&M with a loss but their injury report is bulky and with nothing really to play for at this point of the season they might sit some of their top injured players especially with an in-state rivalry game next week. Vanderbilt showed the ability to score on the ground as well as through the air last week and with them playing 3 straight road games I expect the home crowd to rally behind Mason and company. Take Vanderbilt at home.
