Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Pittsburgh Panthers vs Wake Forest Demon Deacons

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons will return back to BB&T Field for the final home game of the season as they will welcome in ACC foe in the Pittsburgh Panthers, the opening kickoff is slated for 12:00 PM. The Demon Deacons got a big win last week which has them back in bowl eligibility talks while Pittsburgh controls their own destiny in the ACC Coastal division.

Pittsburgh Panthers's Latest Performance :

The Pittsburgh Panthers have been one of the many surprises to the college football season as they now sit in the driver’s seat of the ACC Coastal division after finishing 2017 5-7. The Panthers are an old school type of team as they love the ground and pound game, and they have the backs to do just that as they have 2 effective backs. Qadree Ollison had a big game for the Panthers as the redshirt senior was able to rush for 235 yards and 3 TDs against a traditionally good defense in the Virginia Tech Hokies. Ollison has now eclipsed the 1000 yard mark as the 6’2 225 pound back has 1054 yards and 10 TDs on the season. Ollison is complemented nicely by senior RB Darrian Hall and their matchup was an exact example of that as Hall rushed for 187 yards and a TD. The Panthers don’t ask much out of sophomore QB Kenny Pickett as he only threw the ball 11 times against VTech but he was efficient as he completed 7 passes for 162 yards and 1 TD. Pickett hooked up with Maurice Ffrench 2 times but it went for 83 yards and 1 TD. The defense has shown flashes of championship level type play and they showed their ability to get after the QB in their recent matchup as they had 4 sacks. The Panthers sack leader Rashad Weaver extended his team-high to 5.5 sacks while throwing in 3 tackles of his own. Redshirt senior Dennis Briggs had a solid game from the secondary as he had a team-high 7 tackles.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons's Latest Performance :

The odds were against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons last week as they were playing a backup QB against the #15 team in the nation but they came through with a huge last-minute TD to give them a 27-23 win. Redshirt sophomore Jamie Newman had a solid game in his first start in what is a hostile environment as he completed 22 passes for 297 yards and 3 TDs. Newman is a big QB as he stands at 6’4 and he showed resemblance of Cam Newton as he was effective on the ground with 44 yards. With NC State having a solid rush defense there weren’t many running lanes for the big backs of Wake Forest but Cade Carney was still able to compile 68 yards on 12 carries which puts his season total at 669 yards and 6 TDs. The receivers stepped up in a big way for the Demon Deacons especially Sage Surratt who had a team-high 8 catches for 109 yards. The Wake Forest top WR Greg Dortch was able to get into the end zone for the 7th time this year and he is just shy of 1000 yards as he now sits at 921. The back end of the Demon Deacons defense had a big game as Armani Henderson and Cameron Glenn combined for 25 tackles and 1 sack. The Demon Deacons top tackler Justin Stmad was held to only 5 tackles but he still sits at a strong 78 tackles on the year.

Against The Spread Selection: Pittsburgh Panthers -6

My reason for the pick :

The Pittsburgh Panthers have been excellent as of recent as they are well on their way to winning the ACC Coastal division and giving Clemson all they got in the championship game. The Panthers rushing attack has been absolutely unstoppable this year and given Wake Forest struggles on the defensive side of the ball I don’t see them stopping Hall or Ollison. This is a letdown type of game for the Demon Deacons as they may have gotten their signature win of the season last week against NC State. Expect Pitt to stay focused on their goal of reaching the ACC Championship game and rush for 300+ yards.
