Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Stanford Cardinal vs California Golden Bears
The California Golden Bears return home to California Memorial Stadium for a PAC-12 matchup against the Stanford Cardinal, the opening kickoff is slated for 7:30 PM. The California Golden Bears earned their 6th win of the season last week against USC while Stanford is bowl eligible but having a down year to their standards.
Stanford Cardinal's Latest Performance :
The Stanford Cardinal are having a down year to David Shaw’s standards as they currently are 4-3 in conference play and they aren’t in contention for the north division like they have been accustomed to the last few seasons. Stanford was able to receive a big-time win over Oregon State last weekend to lock up their 10th consecutive bowl eligible season. Stanford received a huge game out of junior QB K.J. Costello as he completed 23 of his 33 passes for 342 yards, 4 TDs, and 1 interception. Costello has been the QB that Shaw has lacked the last few years as he has thrown for over 2854 yards and 23 TDs. Preseason Heisman trophy candidate Bryce Love has dealt with injuries all season long but the senior showed why he was a favorite in his recent outing against the Beavers as he rushed for 90 yards and 1 TD on 11 carries. The Cardinal top WR was ruled out of this matchup as JJ Arcega-Whiteside has been dealing with an ankle injury but the other pass catchers stepped up in the senior’s absence. Sophomore TE Colby Parkinson had a career game for Stanford as he was able to bring down 6 catches for 166 yards and 4 TDs. The Stanford defense played well as they held Oregon State to 17 points but they will need to match their efforts this week as the defense they are facing is one of the best in the nation. Senior safety Frank Buncom was able to come down with his first interception of the season while contributing 3 tackles. The pass rush was solid for Stanford as they were able to total 2 sacks and a ton of QB hurries.
California Golden Bears's Latest Performance :
The California Golden Bears are coming off a big win against the USC Trojans which gave them their 6th win of the season and has made them bowl eligible for the 1st time since 2015. The California Golden Bears were able to use a strong 3rd quarter to score 15 straight points as they rallied behind their defense. Redshirt freshmen QB Chase Garbers didn’t have a big game by any standard but he was still able to connect on a TD in the 3rd quarter as well as add one on the ground. Garbers only threw for 93 yards which adds to his 1105 yard season and his 34 yards on the ground buts him at 307 rushing yards. Redshirt senior RB Patrick Laird was bottled up most of the game by the USC defense as he was only able to rush for 71 yards on 19 carries. Laird has been one of the best RBs in the PAC-12 as he has rushed for 774 yards and 3 TDs and on top of that has contributed 269 yards and 3 TDs through the air. The Golden Bears top WR was able to get his hands on the lone passing TD of the game as redshirt senior Vic Wharton had 2 catches for 34 yards and a TD. The defense has been the main reason behind the Golden Bears success this season and their latest matchup against USC was no different. LBs Jordan Kunaszyk and Evan Weaver combined for 24 tackles in this game which is just a sample size of their season as they both have 100+ tackles. Junior CB Traveon Beck came down with the lone interception for the Cal defense which was the 3rd of the season for him.

My reason for the pick :
This will be one of the most underrated matchups of week 12 as we have a solid offense against a good defense as well as an in-state rivalry. I will be siding with Stanford on the road here as they have shown the ability to be effective on the ground as well as through the air. There is too much veteran leadership on this team for them to not stay focused on this game and I think that is a huge reason they win. Stanford has played better defense over the last few weeks and I think they take that mindset into this game against a bad offense. Cal has also been really bad ATS at home while Stanford has excelled on the road. Take Stanford to cover this small spread on the road.
