Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Syracuse Orange vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Norte Dame Fighting Irish will put their perfect season on the line in a neutral site matchup against the Syracuse Orange, the opening kickoff is slated for 2:30 PM. The Fighting Irish have breezed through most of their games and now control their own destiny to the CFP while Syracuse has beaten up on teams in the ACC and rank #13 in the AP Poll.

Syracuse Orange's Latest Performance :

College Football fans have been waiting for the breakthrough of the Syracuse Orange under Dino Babers and this is finally the year they have done that as they rank #13 in the nation as well as pushed Clemson to the buzzer on the road. The Syracuse Orange were able to beat up on the laughing stock of the ACC in the Louisville Cardinals last week as they won 54-23. The ground game was very effective for this high-powered offense as junior Moe Neal contributed 159 yards and 2 TDs on only 8 carries. Neal has been sensational all season long for the Orange as he leads the team with 712 yards and 5 TDs. Joining Neal with a strong game on the ground is veteran QB Eric Dungey who was able to pick up 2 TDs to push his season total to 12 rushing TDs. Dungey didn’t have a big game through the air as he only threw for 192 yards and 1 TD but he has been effective all season as he has thrown for 2193 yards and 14 TDs. Dungey’s lone TD pass of the game connected with Nykeim Johnson for 65 yards which was his lone catch of the game. The Orange top WR Jamal Custis was kept in check by the Louisville defense as he was only able to get his hands on 2 balls for 14 yards. Senior LB Ryan Guthrie was all over the field for the Orange as he had a team-high 10 tackles. LB Kielan Whitner was able to come down with his 2nd interception of the season to go along with his 8 tackles.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish's Latest Performance :

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are experiencing one of their best seasons ever as they have waxed through teams including an opening night win against the Michigan Wolverines. The Fighting Irish were said to be on upset alert this past weekend against Florida State due to the health of their starting QB Ian Book. Brian Kelly elected to start the projected starting QB heading into the season in senior Brandon Wimbush. Wimbush didn’t do anything spectacular in this matchup as he was only able to throw for 130 yards and 2 interceptions but he was able to connect for 3 TDs. The reason that the Fighting Irish were able to stomp through Florida State can be accredited to their effective ground game. Senior RB Dexter Williams torched a good run defense for 202 yards and 2 TDs to push his season total to 770 yards and 10 TDs. Wimbush was able to connect with senior TE Alize Mack for 2 TDs which accounts for all but one of his TDs on the season. Notre Dame’s top WR Miles Boykin was shut down most of the game but he was still able to haul in his 8th TD catch of the season. Alohi Gilman had a big game for the Irish from the safety spot as he led the team in tackles with 10 which gives him 58 on the season. Senior safety Nick Coleman came down with a big interception on the opening drive of the game which he returned 27 yards and put the Irish in prime position to score.

Against The Spread Selection: Syracuse Orange +9

My reason for the pick :

This is arguably the last test for Notre Dame and the CFP but Syracuse won’t lay down as they are seeking a New Years Six Bowl. The Orange have a really good offense while the Fighting Irish have a really good defense but somethings got to give. This game is a neutral site matchup but it is New York where there are an abundance of Syracuse fans which means no one has true home field advantage. I will be interested to see who starts at QB for the Irish and if Wimbush gets the go again I expect Syracuse to win this game outright. If Book goes I will still back the Orange and the hefty spread for a top 25 matchup.
