Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Ball State Cardinals vs Miami (Ohio) RedHawks

The Miami (Ohio) RedHawks return home to Yager Stadium for the regular season finale as they will welcome in the Ball State Cardinals for a MAC conference clash, the opening kickoff is slated for 7:00 PM. The RedHawks have been red hot as of recent and need one more win to become bowl eligible while Ball State has shown some life over the last few weeks but are still short of the postseason.

Ball State Cardinals's Latest Performance :

The Ball State Cardinals have not made a bowl game since 2013 but the buzz is that Mike Neu has this program moving in the right direction and we have seen some fight out of his team especially last week on senior night. The Cardinals were able to win in overtime at home against Western Michigan behind an explosive night out of the offense. Backup QB Drew Plitt has gone through growing pains ever since he stepped into the starting role and his showing against Western Michigan showed some flaws but also positive plays to take into next season. The redshirt sophomore was able to rack up 258 yards and 3 TDs but he also contributed 2 interceptions which kept the Broncos in the game. The turnovers have been a problem all season long for Plitt as he enters the final game of the season with more interceptions than TDs (6 ints, 5 TDs). The WRs for Ball State were able to have a big game especially the starting 3 as Justin Hall, Riley Miller, and Corey Lacanaria combined for 18 catches, 273 yards, and 2 TDs. Redshirt junior Riley Miller has been the Ball State QBs favorite target all season long as he has racked up 807 yards and 6 TDs on 56 catches. Redshirt junior RB James Gilbert wasn’t as explosive as we have seen at times this season but he was still able to contribute 2 TDs which gives him 7 on the season. The Ball State defense got shredded on the ground as Western Michigan ran for over 361 yards which made sophomore safety Bryce Cosby a very busy man as he had a team-high 17 tackles.

Miami (Ohio) RedHawks's Latest Performance :

The Miami (Ohio) RedHawks are a much different team now than what we saw at the beginning of the season as they have gone 5-2 in conference play and sit just one game away from bowl eligibility for the 2nd time in 8 years. The RedHawks are coming off arguably their most impressive victory of the season as they won on the road against Northern Illinois behind a strong defense. Redshirt senior QB Gus Ragland had been excellent all season long but he was unable to do much through the air or on the ground against the Huskies. Ragland was only able to throw for 107 yards on 15 completions as well as only 3 yards on 7 carries. This is an unusual outing from the veteran QB as Ragland has thrown for 2388 yards, 16 TDs, and only 3 interceptions while also contributing an additional 199 yards and 5 TDs on the ground. Another veteran playmaker was unable to get much going for the RedHawks either as redshirt senior RB Alonzo Smith was only able to squeeze out 40 yards on 18 carries which is well below his season average of 4.4 YPC. Most of Ragland’s throws went to his favorite target in redshirt sophomore WR Jack Sorenson as he hauled down 7 catches for a total of 77 yards which extends his season total to 706 yards on 50 catches. The defense stepped up in a big way for the RedHawks as they contributed the lone TD of the game as freshmen DB Ja’don Rucker-Furlow brought down an interception and returned it 28 yards the other way. Redshirt sophomore LB Ryan McWood contributed a team-high 10 tackles which contributes to most of his total as he entered this matchup with 5 tackles.

Against The Spread Selection: Miami (Ohio) RedHawks

My reason for the pick :

This is a matchup of two teams who are in completely different situations as the RedHawks are going for bowl eligibility on senior night while Ball State is trying to stay healthy and move onto next season. The RedHawks were led by their defense last week and they should have yet another great game against a turnover prone QB like Plitt. I expect Ragland to control the game with a balanced attack after the RedHawks go up a few scores early in the game and allow for them to start preparing for their bowl game. Expect the seniors to have a big game on their night, take the RedHawks.
