Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Old Dominion Monarchs vs Rice Owls

The Old Dominion Monarchs will travel to Rice stadium in Houston Texas, for a battle against the Rice Owls on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. None of these teams will look forward to a bowl game at the end of the season, however, will certainly be looking to in their season on high notes after  a disastrous 2018 campaign. The Old Dominion Monarchs are winners of three of their last four games, however, while also winning two straight after a 77-14 home blowout of the Virginia Military Keydets last weekend as they were able to go up 48-0 at the half en route to a blowout victory. The Monarchs racked up over 300 yards rushing in the game while three running backs had two or more touchdowns in the contest.

On the other hand, the Rice Owls awful season continued with a 42-10 road loss versus the LSU Tigers in their last timeout as they were only allowed 198 total yards of offense while their rushing attack averaged 2.3 yards per carry in what was their 11th straight loss after winning  their first game of the season.

Old Dominion Monarchs's Latest Performance :

After starting the year with the record of  1 – 6, the Old Dominion Monarchs made a go of it toward the end of the season and have won three of their last four games with the last being a 77 – 14 home win over the Virginia military Keydets.   In this matchup, two rushing touchdowns by Jeremy Cox kick-started the Monarchs offense as they went up by almost 50 points at the half while cruising to victory in the second. During their current win streak, the Monarchs are averaging 49 points per game while their defense has given up an average of 27 points during this time.

The Monarchs racked up 509 total yards in their victory over the Keydets as the rushing attack was certainly the tip of the spear in collecting 339 yards on the night led by Cox with 98 yards along with two touchdowns while their leading rusher, Keysean Strong, rushed for 62 yards along with having two rushing touchdowns on the night. Quarterback Jake Larusso threw for a two touchdown passes in the win for the Monarchs as well. In all, ODU will certainly be looking to end the season on a strong note as well as their final push will certainly give them motivation throughout the offseason.

Rice Owls's Latest Performance :

As stated, after the Rice Owls picked up a slim 42-39 win over  Prairie View A&M in their first matchup of 2018, they have since crashed and burned in losing  11 straight games with their last loss being a 42-10 road beating at the hands of the LSU Tigers.  Again, the Owls certainly had trouble moving the ball all night long while its defense allowed the Tigers to rack up 180 yards on the ground along with Joe burrow throwing for 307 yards along with two TDs in the win for LSU. On the other hand, Shawn Stankavage only threw for 101 yards for Rice while the rushing attack was led by Ashton Walter with 72 yards on 23 carries for the game.

In all, the game was more of the same for Rice as they continue to struggle on both sides of the ball. They are averaging only 314 total yards per game this year while it’s passing and rushing attack is ranked  in the 100’s in the nation. Furthermore, combine this with the fact that they are only averaging 18 points per game for the season, the Owls should really be looking toward the offseason in which to get better and come out much stronger next year.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Look for this matchup to be very competitive in that you have the Old Dominion Monarchs who are looking to end the season on they winning note by winning four of their last five to to end the season while the rice owls will be simply looking to find a positive after what has been a very trying season. It all, expect both teams to come out focus on getting it when, however, also look for this game to be a rather low-scoring yet competitive affair as well.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Rice Owls +9.5

My reason for the pick :

While I happen to believe that the Rice Owls will not win this matchup, I do believe, however, that they will indeed come to play in this match up and will be focused on getting the much-needed win. Unfortunately, the Owls have just not been good this year and with the Monarchs garnering up so much momentum throughout the past month of the season, look for them  to find a way in which to win this ball game. The Monarchs picked up the 24-21 win over the Owls last season while the Owls covered as 7 point underdogs for the contest.

Totals Selection: Pick: Over 63.5

My reason for the prediction :

I will back the over in this contest as I see the Monarchs certainly moving the ball effectively versus an Owls defense that cannot seem to stop anyone these days. Old Dominion comes into this game with much, if not all, of the momentum  to where the over has been the play in all but two of their games this season. With that being the case, the strong play in this contest will certainly be the over due to the Monarchs ability to move the ball on an inconsistent defense for the Owls.

Betting trends for Old Dominion Monarchs:

  • Over is 4-0 in Monarchs last 4 vs. a team with a losing record.
Over is 4-0 in Monarchs last 4 games following a ATS win.
Monarchs are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a losing home record.

Betting trends for Rice Owls:

  • Under is 3-0-2 in Owls last 5 games after allowing more than 450 total yards in their previous game.
Owls are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
Over is 4-0-1 in Owls last 5 games after allowing more than 280 yards passing in their previous game
