Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Washington Huskies vs Utah Utes

The Utah Utes and Washington Huskies will meet in the PAC-12 Championship game at Levi’s Stadium in California with an opening kickoff of 8:00 PM. The Utah Utes won the South division for the 1st time since joining the conference in 2011 while Washington returns to the title game for a 3rd consecutive year.

Washington Huskies's Latest Performance :

The Washington Huskies have continued their success in the PAC-12 North division as they will be playing in the conference championship for a 3rd consecutive year after they beat the Washington State Cougars on the road to close out the season. The Huskies have received inconsistent play out of their QB all season but they have shown the ability to still dominate with this game being an example of that. QB Jake Browning only attempted 14 passes all game and although he was able to connect on 11 of them for 201 yards he did contribute an interception. Browning enters the postseason with a TD:INT ratio of 2:1 while he has connected on 65.1% of his passes. The ground attack is what truly won the game for the Huskies against Washington State as they received a huge game out of senior RB Myles Gaskin. Gaskin contributed 170 yards and 3 TDs on 27 carries which pushes his season total to 1076 yards and 10 TDs. Backup RB Salvon Ahmed came into the game and contributed a good amount himself as he ran for 87 yards on 9 carries. Sophomore TE Hunter Bryant had a big game for the Huskies as he was able to contribute 3 catches for 108 yards and a TD. The defense had yet another great outing for Washington as they forced one of the top QBs in the nation into a few mistakes. LB Ben Burr-Kirven once again led the team in tackles with 10 while he also contributed an interception. Burr-Kirven is the favorite to win the best LB in the country as the senior enters the postseason with 155 tackles and 2 interceptions.

Utah Utes's Latest Performance :

The Utah Utes will be playing for the first PAC-12 championship after finishing 6-3 in the South division but more impressively they have put together a 3 game win streak without the services of their starting QB and RB. The Utes have turned to freshmen QB Jason Shelley after the injury to Tyler Huntley but he has not missed a beat as he has been a force on the ground as well as through the air. Shelley threw for 141 yards and a TD last weekend against BYU but his presence was also felt on the ground as he rushed for 61 yards and a TD. The Utes biggest problem was the fact that they had to replace their 1000-yard rusher in Zack Moss as the junior ran for 1092 yards and 11 TDs before going down with an injury. Junior RB Armand Shyne stepped into the starting role and he showed his abilities against BYU as he ran for 47 yards and 2 TDs. Shyne enters the postseason just shy of the 500-mark on the season as he has gained 442 yards and 5 TDs on 95 attempts. The Utes were able to receive a big game out of an unlikely source as WR Siaosi Mariner had one of the best games of his career as he racked up a team-high 50 yards on 3 catches, the junior entered this game with 121 yards on the season. The defense for the Utes looked questionable to start but they stepped it up in the 2nd half. LB Chase Hansen led the way for the unit with 13 tackles while Julian Blackmon started the scoring for the Utes with a pick-6.

Against The Spread Selection: Washington Huskies -4.5

My reason for the pick :

Washington and Utah play a similar brand of football as they both have strong defenses and like to run the ball on offense but the advantage goes to the Huskies as they have played in a ton of big games over the last few years while Utah is new to the scene. Although Shelley has looked good as a freshman he hasn’t faced a defense like the Huskies and with that being said he will struggle similar to Gardner Minshew.  The Huskies will rely on Gaskin and Ahmed to put some points on the board and although Utah has a top 25 unit it won’t be enough to stop one of the top RBs in the nation from scoring. Take Washington to win by a TD.
