Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs vs Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and Hawaii Rainbow Warriors are set to meet in the SoFi Hawaii Bowl at Aloha Stadium, the opening kickoff is slated for 10:30 PM. Louisiana Tech finished 3rd in the West division of Conference USA while Hawaii had one of the best seasons in years as they won 8 games for the 1st time since 2010.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs's Latest Performance :

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs were slated to be one of the top teams in Conference USA but they did not exceed expectations especially later in the season as they dropped 2 straight games in conference play to drop them into 3rd place. The latest loss of the season was arguably their worst as they were unable to stop one of the worst teams in the conference at home as they lost to Western Kentucky 30-15. LA Tech put the game in QB J’Mar Smith hands as they threw the ball 44 times but they were only able to connect on 24 passes for a total of 280 yards and an interception. If there has been one knock on the redshirt junior it is the fact that he has turned the ball over at a high rate as he has thrown 14 TDs compared to 9 interceptions. Since the Bulldogs were unable to score through the air they were forced to turn to the ground game which has been stagnated at times this season. Although RB Israel Tucker was able to score the lone offensive TD of the game he was unable to find much running room as he gained 39 yards on 10 carries. The Bulldogs top RB in Jaqwis Dancy was only able to rack up 3 yards on 2 carries which leaves the redshirt junior with 610 yards and 9 TDs heading into the postseason. The Bulldogs top WR Adrian Hardy was able to eclipse the 1000-yard mark on the season after he racked in 9 receptions for 125 yards against Western Kentucky which pushes his season total to 1052 yards. The defense for LA Tech has been strong all season but they were unable to stop a sloppy Western Kentucky offense in the latest outing. Redshirt senior LB Dae’Von Washington had a big outing as he racked in 9 tackles while Amik Robertson came down with the lone interception of the game.

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors's Latest Performance :

The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors won’t have to travel far for this bowl game as it is in their home stadium but they are honored to be playing in the postseason as this will only be their 2nd appearance since 2010. Hawaii was able to end their season on a high note as they went on the road and beat a really good San Diego State in OT 31-30 which gave this team their 2nd straight win and 8th of the season. QB Cole McDonald had yet another big outing for the Rainbow Warriors as he threw for 452 yards and 3 TDs which gives the redshirt sophomore one of the best stat lines in the country as he enters the postseason with 3790 passing yards, 35 TDs, and 8 interceptions while also adding in 370 rushing yards and 4 TDs. The ground game has been hit or miss for the Rainbow Warriors this season as although they don’t have any 500+ rushers they have two guys over 400 yards. RB Dayton Furuta is the top rusher for the Rainbow Warriors with 450 yards and 2 TDs but the redshirt junior missed the last game which really hurt the effectiveness of the ground game. A couple of WRs had big outings against San Diego State especially Cedric Byrd and JoJo Ward as the duo went over 100 yards. Cedric Byrd had the biggest outing out of the two as he went for 140 yards and a TD on 6 catches which puts him just shy of 1000-yards on the season with 939 yards and 9 TDs. Top WR John Ursua was kept silent in this game but he has put together one of the best seasons in the nation with 1343 receiving yards and 16 TDs.

Against The Spread Selection: Hawaii Rainbow Warriors -1.5

My reason for the pick :

Sure this is a bowl game but Hawaii is playing in their home stadium which is a big difference as they get to change in their own locker room, go through their regular routine, and play in front of their home fans. Football related I still think Hawaii is the better team as they can score in a hurry with one of the most underrated QBs in the nation as Cole McDonald has quietly put together a Colt Brennan season. The Rainbow Warriors have a ton of weapons on the outside and Ursua is a mismatch for any top defense and considering these two teams ended the season on two different notes I will have to ride with the hotter team.

Betting trends for Louisiana Tech Bulldogs:

  • LA Tech is 4-1 ATS as underdogs this season.

Betting trends for Hawaii Rainbow Warriors:

  • Hawaii is 3-3-1 ATS after a win this season.
