Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Miami Hurricanes vs Wisconsin Badgers
The Wisconsin Badgers and Miami Hurricanes will meet in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium in New York, the opening kickoff is slated for 5:15 PM. These two teams met in the Orange Bowl last season but after disappointing years they find themselves playing before New Years Day. Miami finished 4-4 in a weak ACC Coastal division which they were supposed to run while Wisconsin went 5-4 in the Big Ten West division.
Miami Hurricanes's Latest Performance :
The Miami Hurricanes looked poised to take over the ACC Coastal division after their run to the ACC Championship game in 2017 but after last season there is some uncertainty with these team moving forward. The Hurricanes were able to close out their season on a high note with a win over the Coastal champions in the Pittsburgh Panthers, 24-3. The QB position has been a big question mark all season long and we saw exactly why against Pitt as redshirt freshmen N’Kosi Perry only completed 6 of his 24 passes for 52 yards. Perry has shown flashes of potential as he enters the postseason with 1089 passing yard, 13 TDs, and 5 interceptions but we saw a small sample size of his youth in the last game of the regular season which has limited the potential of this offense. The ground game was able to continue carrying the offense on their back as RB Travis Homer was able to have a big outing against Pitt as he racked up 168 yards and a TD on 8 carries. Homer enters the postseason just shy of 1000-yards on the season as the junior has compiled 969 yards and 4 TDs. DeeJay Dallas has been an explosive weapon for the Hurricanes all season long and he showed his ability to impact the game as he racked up 39 yards and a TD on 8 carries while also returning a punt for a TD. The defense for the Hurricanes was finally able to flex their muscles and show why they are one of the best units in college football. DB Jaquan Johnson was able to rack up a team-high 5 tackles while the combination of Joseph Jackson, Michael Jackson, Gerald Willis, and Shaq Quarterman contributed 6 sacks.
Wisconsin Badgers's Latest Performance :
The Wisconsin Badgers were close to being a College Football Playoff team in 2017 but even considering their down year Paul Chryst has this program returning to their 17th straight bowl game. The Badgers were unable to close out the regular season on a high note as they lost to the Minnesota Golden Gophers 37-15 on senior day. Junior QB Alex Hornibrook has been turnover prone ever since he took over the starting role and we saw that o full display to close out the season as he threw for 189 yards, 2 TDs, and 3 interceptions. Hornibrook has been ruled out for the bowl game due to Concussion symptoms which has caused the Badgers to remove the redshirt off freshmen QB Jack Coan. Coan has seen some action this season and he has shown he is capable of running this offense as he has thrown for 488 yards, 4 TDs, and 2 interceptions. The Badgers aren’t too worried about Coan filling in with a big reason being they rely heaving on sophomore RB Jonathan Taylor. Taylor was unable to reach the end zone against Minnesota but he still had an effective game as he rushed for 120 yards on 19 carries which gives him 1989 yards and 15 TDs heading into bowl season. Sophomore WR Danny Davis had one of the best outings of his career as he was able to haul in a team-high 10 catches for 94 yards and a TD which could be a difference maker against the Hurricanes. The defense for the Badgers lacks the elite title they had last year with their Big Ten West champion squad. LB T.J. Edwards had a monster outing against Minnesota as he was able to rack up a team-high 18 tackles which puts the senior over 100 tackles on the season with 103.

My reason for the pick :
These two teams met in the Orange Bowl last season which proved to be a good matchup but times have changed with both of these programs and the question arises: will this slugfest live up to expectations. I give the advantage to the Hurricanes in this matchup as their defense is what separates them from the Badgers. With a freshmen QB at the helm for Wisconsin, I expect the Hurricanes to stack the box and bring pressure to force them to try and throw on their top secondary. The QB play isn’t much better with the Hurricanes but I trust Perry to make more plays than Coan for the simple reason that Perry can make plays with his feet and has started most of the games this season. Expect this to be a close game but Miami will pull away with a late score.
