Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Baltimore Ravens vs Indianapolis Colts

The Baltimore Ravens will visit Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Monday, 8-20-2018, to match up with the Indianapolis Colts at 8 pm EST.  This will be the Ravens 3rd preseason matchup as they were 17-16 winners over the Chicago Bears in the HOF game on 8- 2-2018 while they feasted on the Los Angeles Rams on 8-9-2018 by putting up 33 to only 7 points for the Rams.  The Colts also played well on the road versus the Seattle Seahawks on 8-9-2018 by picking up the 19-17 road win despite a potential late collapse which entail an end zone fumble recovery for the Seahawks late in the game which put them within 2 points of the lead.  The Colts would hold on to the ball on offense and squeak out a much-needed and all-important victory to begin their season.   The Ravens, after its defense allowed only 65 rushing yards and 211 passing yards to the Bears during the HOF game, allowed the Rams 121 yards rushing and only 49 passing yards, yet, would come out with the 33-7 win due to a punishing 140 yards rushing on offense along with 263 total yards passing.  Andrew Luck would not throw a TD for the Colts against Seattle; However, the Colts will certainly be looking to open it up a bit more as the preseason progresses.  The Ravens, on the other hand, will look to build upon its success recently against the upgraded Colts, yet, it would be important to note that they have not had much success at Lucas Oil Stadium in the past.

Baltimore Ravens's Latest Performance :

While many may have felt that the Luck to Hilton connection would be on full display on 8-9-2018, they were certainly disappointed as Hilton only was targeted only 4 time with 1 catch for 8 yards in the game.  Luck, on the other hand, was limited under center yet completing 6 of 9 passes for 64 yards in his return from an injury that sidelined him for the majority of last season.  Jacoby Brissett was 6-8 for 35 yards while Brad Kaaya went 3-4 for 24 yards in action.  The only touchdown thrown by a Colts QB was a 10-yard strike from Phillip Walker to Darrel Daniels to extend the Colts lead in the 4th with 11 minutes remaining.  Robert Turbin had 27 yards on 6 carries on the ground while Jordan Wilkins racked up 21 yards on 6 carries.  Christine Michael got 3 carries for 12 yards in the victory for the Colts.  Kasen Williams was targeted 4 times with 3 receptions and 46 yards while Zack Pascal caught 1 pass for 32yards.  Running back Marlon Mack was targeted twice with 2 catches for 23 yards and Robert Turbin caught 2 passes for 18 yards for Indy.

Nate Hairston caught his first interception of the preseason for the Colts while Hassan Ridgeway, Jon Simon, and Denico Autry all had sacks for the defensive line totaling a loss of 34 yards, altogether.  Kenny Moore II had 4 tackles on the night for Indy while Quincy Wilson (3 tackles), Tyrell Adams (3 tackles), and Ridgeway (3 tackles) rounded out the defensive performance in the victory.

In all, the Colts would rush for a combined 76 yards on 33 carries while throwing for 189 in the air for the game.  The Seahawks dominated on return yards with 121 compared with only 21 for Indy.  Finally, it would be important to mention that while the Colts would win the penalty battle by committing 5 for 45 yards while Seattle would commit 12 for 98 total yards, the Colts put the ball on the turf 7 times, though luckily losing 1 to their opponent.  Both teams were subpar in the red zone as the Colts were 1-4 for the game inside the 20 while Seattle was 1-2 overall.  The Colts will be looking for more consistency from special teams while shoring up inconsistencies as it relates to sustaining drives as well in this matchup.

Indianapolis Colts's Latest Performance :

The Ravens would go 2-0 in the preseason by whipping the Los Angeles Rams by a 33-7 score, as stated.  Joe Flacco would get some snaps early as he would go 5-7 with 71 yards with a TD while Lamar Jackson and Robert Griffin III would combine to go 12-25 with 207 yards, with Griffin throwing a 32-yard touchdown pass to Breshard Perriman in the finale quarter to cease the scoring for the home team.  Running back Gus Edwards paced the backfield with 58 yards on 12 carries while Lamar Jackson also racked up 26 yards on 5 carries in the win.  Alex Collins had 26 yards rushing on 2 carries fort he Ravens with the longest being a 23-yard run from scrimmage.   Breshard Perriman ending the game with 3 receptions for 71 yards while mark Thompson (2-43), Chris Moore (1-36), and Janarion Grant (2-32) also chipped in for the offense.  Michael Crabtree also caught a pass for 30 yards in the win for Baltimore.

Cornerback Marcus Canady had an interception in the game for the Ravens while Tim Williams, Zack Ziegler, Matthew Judon, and Terrell Suggs had a sack for the defense as well.  Linebackers Chris Board and Tim Williams each had 3 tackles for Baltimore while DeShon Elliot and Matthew Judon also had 2 stops apiece in the contest.

The Ravens must, however, improve upon their special teams play as they allowed the Rams 218 return yards for the game.  Other than this stat, the Ravens would dominate the first down battle (21-11) along with penalties as they would commit 8 for 56 yards while the Rams would possess 11 for a total of 87 yards for the game.  In all, I certainly expect both teams to come out fired up in which to build from their recent success.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

I feel as though this may be one of the more interesting games of the week as the Ravens look to continue their preseason success against an Indy team looking to build from the success from their last outing against the Seahawks in which to continue to build positive momentum for the regular season.  Andrew Luck did not get many reps in his last outing, yet, the Colts simply may want to limit his snaps in the preseason in which to keep him healthy for when the season starts.  I would certainly look for him to get a bit more snaps in this matchup against a Ravens defense that has looked strong in the early going of this new season.  Look for the Colts faithful to welcome Luck back in what will be his first start under center at Lucas Oil Stadium in a year.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Indianapolis Colts -1

My reason for the pick :

I will back the Indianapolis Colts in this matchup simply because they picked up a huge confidence building win on the road against the Seahawks recently, thus setting the stage for their continued growth as a team throughout the preseason and, of course, contributing to their success as the season begins and progresses.  With that being said, I expect the Colts to continue re-working Luck back into form by increasing his workload a bit from his last outing while also envisioning the defensive line for the Colts to be aggressive at the point of contact with an offense that is averaging 126 yards per game in their first 2 preseason matchups.  In the end, I see the Colts playing yet another solid game against the tough-minded Ravens.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under 40.5

My reason for the prediction :

Trends point out that not only has the under been the play for both these teams in recent outings, but, one must think that with two aggressive defenses taking the field against re-tooling offenses, the under must indeed be the play.  Again, this d-line for the Colts can potentially be dangerous this year, however, the Ravens boast a stout defensive as well along with experienced linebackers that can also cause problems for offenses.  In all, I will strong suggest taking the under in this matchup, as I certainly do not see many scoring opportunities being presented from 2 stingy defenses looking to exert their physicality even more as the season wears on.
