Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

New England Patriots vs Carolina Panthers

The New England Patriots will visiting the Carolina Panthers on 8-24-2018 for week 3 preseason NFL action which will take place at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina at 7:30 pm EST.  The Patriots are coming off a convincing 37-20 home win over the Philadelphia Eagles on 8-16-2018 to where they would cash in on the spread as favorites (4.5) while the over was the play with the total being set at 42.5 for the game.  The Panthers would get a 27-20 home win versus the Miami Dolphins on 8-17-2018 to where they would also cover the spread as home favorites (-3) while the over was also the result with the total being set at 42.5 points for the game.  Despite the Pats being middle of the road as it relates to average yardage per game (318 yards, 16th in league), the defense is ranked 25th in total defense 346 and will certainly look to get back to basics against a Carolina team that is ranked 4th in total yards on offense in 2 games during the preseason (374-yard average).  The Panthers D, on the other hand, is ranked worse at 30th in the league in total defense as they are allowing 383 yards thus far.  I certainly see an exciting offensive matchup in this contest as both look to continue their preseason success in remaining undefeated.

New England Patriots 's Latest Performance :

Tom Brady would end the night going 19 for 26 for 172 yards and 2 TD’s as the Patriots would have 26 first downs compared to 21 for the Eagles while the offense would put up 140 rushing yards along with 194 passing yards in a 37-20 win on 8-16-2018.  They would also hang 27 points in the first half on an Eagles D that looked hugely overmatched against what was seemingly an unstoppable Pats O.  Aside from Brady, Brian Hoyer would go 5 for 13 for 32 yards total with a TD while Danny Etling would go 0-1 in the game.  Brandon Bolden would lead the rushing attack with 3 rushes for 35 yards while James White and Jeremy Hill would combine for 10 rushes for 61 yards.  James White would have 6 receptions for 61 yards while Cordalle Paterson (4 rec for 51 yards) and Julian Edelman (4 rec for 26 yards) also stepped up for the receiving corps.  Chris Hogan would also grab 5 receptions for 25 yards in the win.

Defensively, the Pats D was stout against an Eagles offense that would put up 22 first downs on 43 yards rushing along with 316 passing yards for the game.  Christian Sam would get an interception in this matchup while the Patriots would rack up 8 sacks for the night with Keionta Davis (1.5), Kyle Van Noy (1), Patrick Chung (1), and Adrian Claybourne (1) each stepping up big.  Keion Crossen would lead the defensive with 8 tackles overall while Christian Sam and Patrick Chung would combine for 11 tackles, altogether for New England.

Carolina Panthers's Latest Performance :

With rushing TD’s from Cameron Artis-Payne and Elijah Hood for the Panthers would put them up 27-12 late in the 4th quarter to allow Carolina to pull out a huge home preseason victory in week 2 versus the Dolphins on 8-17-2018.  In all, they would rack up 224 yards rushing for the game with Christian McCafffrey having 5 rushes for 92 yards, Kenyon Barner rushing 5 times for 72 yards, while C,J Anderson rushing 8 times for 39 yards.  Cameron Artis-Payne also had 7 rushes for 18 yards.  The passing game also added 179 yards for an offense that collected 21 first downs for the game with Curtis Samuel having 2 receptions for 65 yards while Ian Thomas having 2 receptions also for 35 yards and a TD, a 27-yard strike from Cam Newton in the 2nd period that allowed the Panthers to regain the lead at 13-9.  Newton would end the game going 9-13 for 89 yards and a TD along with a pick while Taylor Hinicke would go 5-9 for 88 yards and a pick in the win.  Garrett Gilbert would also rack up just 23 yards as he would go 3 for 5 for the night.  The Panthers offense was 2-2 in the red zone while holding an edge in possession time with 31:52 compared to 28:08 for the Dolphins.

The defense for the Panthers were active all game long as Corn Elder would get a pick in this game while Efe Obada and Marguise Haynes would each get a sack.  Dezman Southward would have 5 tackles for the defense while Jermaine Carter Jr and Ladarius Gunter would each have 3 stops for the Panthers in the victory.  In all, they held the Dolphins to only 17 first downs with 109 rushing yards along with 225 passing yards, overall.  Miami, nonetheless, was 1-4 within the red zone for the game while allowing 2 sacks to the Carolina D.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This will certainly be an interesting and exciting matchup between these two teams.  On one hand, both the Pats and the Panthers look to continue their preseason success, however, both are also looking for their defenses to play much better than the production that they have been putting out recently.  Again, both teams are ranked in the lower half of the league as it relates to total defense.  And while one can admit that matchup up against two offenses led by Tom Brady and Cam Newton can certainly cause major problems for a defense that is currently struggling, I believe that the game with certainly be competitive, nonetheless.  I would, however, give the nod to the Panthers, but, only due to their home field advantage.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: New England +2.5

My reason for the pick :

While the Panthers have had success thus far in the preseason, the Pats are seemingly on another mission in which to prove to themselves and the league that, despite losing in the Super Bowl last year, they are still the team to beat in the NFL.  With that being said, I will back the Patriots to keep this matchup close throughout.  Keep in mind that Brady played for nearly 2 quarters in their week 2 preseason matchup and was stellar.  This could certainly mean trouble for a sometimes overly aggressive Panther D that got stung a few times against Miami in week 2.  The Panthers O will find some success against the Patriots defense; However, INT’s were also a thorn in their side against Miami and can potentially hurt them in this matchup.  In all, I will expect the Pats to cover in this game while also having a great chance of winning outright.

Totals Selection: Pick: Over 42.5

My reason for the prediction :

With both defenses playing horribly thus far in the preseason, one would have to conclude that the over is indeed the best play for this particular matchup.  The Patriots are ranked 25th in total defense while the Panthers are currently ranked 30th.  With that being said, one could expect there to be many opportunities for both teams to score, thus allowing the total to surpass 42.5 easily.
