The New Orleans Saints will travel to SDCCU Stadium in San Diego, California, to take on the San Diego Chargers on Saturday at 8 pm EST in week 3 NFL preseason action.  The Saints are coming off a 20-15 home loss versus the Arizona Cardinals on 8-17-2018 to where the they would not cash out on the spread (-4.5) while the under was the play with the total being set at 41.5 points for the game.  The Chargers would beat the Seattle Seahawks at home by a 24-14 score on 8-18-2018 to where they would cover the 3-point spread while the under was the play with the total being set at 40 for the game.  The Chargers have played well on both sides of the ball thus far as their offense is averaging 355 total yards per game (5th) while putting up 21 ppg (14th).  On the other hand, their defense has also been playing well as they are allowing 257 total yards per game (5th) while allowing teams to put up 19 ppg, good for 13th in the league.  The Saints offense has struggled during the preseason in averaging 286 total yards per game (23rd) while putting up 20 ppg (16th), however, the defense has been dominant as they are allowing only 274 yards per game (7th) while surrendering 20 ppg 17th).

New Orleans Saints's Latest Performance :

New Orleans, after scoring only 3 points in the first 3 quarters, would score 12 in the 4th, yet, would take the 20-15 home loss to Arizona after a 12-yard scamper by J.T. Barrett which gave the Cards a score along with the 20-15 lead with only :20 seconds remaining.  Barrett would go 3/5 for 45 yards in the game while Tom Savage would be 6/7 for 53 yards.  Taysom Hill would go 11/15 for 68 yards along with 2 INT’s for the game.  The Saints offense collected 23 first downs for the game while obtaining 183 yards rushing along with 124 yards in the air.  They would, however, go 1 of 5 from within the red zone while having 4 total fumbles (2 lost).  Hill would also lead the team in rushing for the night as he would have 3 rushes for 43 yards total while Jonathan Williams would have 37 yards on 8 rushes.  Mark Ingram and Boston Scott would combine for 13 rushes for 64 yards in the loss for the Saints.

Defensively, the Saints D would limit the Cardinals offense to 18 first downs while allowing 65 yards on the ground versus 211 in the air for the night.  Arizona was 2-2 from within the red zone.  Author Maulet, A.J. Klein, and Alex Anzalone would each lead the defense in tackles with 4 each while Henry Mondaux would chip in 3 stops on the night for New Orleans.

San Diego Chargers's Latest Performance :

The Chargers were able to garner 17 first downs while racking up 176 yards rushing along with 146 passing yards in their last outing versus the Seahawks as Gino Smith would go 6/8 for 85 yards and a TD while Philip Rivers would go 6/7 for 62 yards in the win.  Cardale Jones would go ¾ for 27 yards total for the Chargers.  Detrez Newsome would have 19 rushes for 78 yards total while Cardale Jones would have 4 rushes for 41 yards to pace the rushing attack.  Artavis Scott and Mike Williams would each be targeted a combined 3 times for 3 receptions for 61 yards along with a TD.  The Chargers would also go 1-2 within the red zone for the game.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The Chargers will come into this game fresh off a decent win versus the Seahawks in their last outing; However, the Saints would also build a bit of momentum in the 4th quarter of their recent loss at home to the Cardinals in their last time out.  In all, this will certainly be an interesting matchup in that both teams will certainly be chomping at the bit to get yet another win.  With the Chargers being at home, of course, tips the scales a bit, nonetheless, with both offenses doing next to nothing as it relates to consistency and productivity thus far, I would expect a close matchup that will be exciting throughout.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Los Angeles Chargers -2.5

My reason for the pick :

I will back the Chargers in this matchup in that the Saints have really had a rough go of it the past few weeks in attempting to find the end zone.  While the Chargers have not been dominant by any stretch since the start of the preseason, they will certainly have what it takes to neutralize the weapons for the Saints at home.  In all, this will be a low-scoring contest to where the Chargers will come up with some late 2nd half heroics in which to pull out an all-important victory in the end.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under 43.5

My reason for the prediction :

With both offenses struggling at this point in the season along with them going against a set of defenses that are looking to improve vastly from their showings thus far, I would have to back the under in this instance as I certainly do not believe that the total will surpass the 43.5-mark.  Again, the teams will likely rest their star QB’s for the remainder of the preseason which means fans will get a chance to see the new additions under center.  On the other hand, for bettors, they will see the value in this by taking the under in this contest on Saturday.
